Amebic liver abscess is the most common extra-intestinal manifestation of the protozoan, Entamoeba histolytica. The life cycle involves consumption of fecally contaminated food and water, that reaches and penetrates the small intestine to enter the mesenteric vessels and finally the liver.
The parasite causes up to 40 million infections on an annual basis with up to 100,000 deaths per annum
Abdominal pain, more so in the right, upper part of the abdomen;
Cough.
Fever and chills.
Diarrhea, non-bloody (in only one-third of people with amebic liver abscess)
General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling (malaise)
There are 3 Types of Liver Abscess.
1...Pyogenic abscess, which is most often polymicrobial, accounts for 80% of hepatic abscess cases in the United States.
2...Amebic abscess due to Entamoeba histolytica accounts for 10% of cases.
3...Fungal abscess, most often due to Candida species, accounts for fewer than 10% of cases
