I made a diorama with the floating dock kit released by TAKOM.
I should have produced a scene where the hull was raised at sea on a floating dock, but I wanted to produce a work in the sea using epoxy resin as well, so I produced a diorama in a flooded state before raising the ship to the surface.
00:00 Opening
01:03 Unboxing the floating dock
03:27 Modeling the bottom of the ship
08:17 Unboxing the ship
10:07 Removing the lacing
14:42 Photo etching parts
27:38 Floating dock painting
38:30 Painting of ship
42:54 Camouflage painting
54:46 Weathering
1:06:30 Resin mold
1:11:50 Epoxy resin
1:20:25 Resin polishing
1:26:42 Diorama completed

Near the beginning of the video you were asking if those parts should have bottoms. No they don't. The are called cassions, and when the bottom is soft and muddy, not having a bottom helps them break free of the mud when pumping air in as part of the floatation process. If they did have a bottom the mud was cause really bad suction and stop them from rising. It is a big problem when you are trying to raise ships that have sunk, and was particularly bad in Pearl Harbor after the attack in Dec 41

Floating dry docks are usually found in harbors or other shallow water areas. The deformation in the bottom of the diorama makes it look like you're seeing the bottom of the harbor. For something that was unintended, it looks quite good.

I don't think adding a plastic film to the bottom was mistake. It distorted, but now, from the side it looks more simillar to the sea bottom because of light bending. It was not intended but, i guess, it looks a bit better than plain flat finish would. Amazing work!

Floating drydocks are incredibly useful for not only navies but also civilian shipbuilders. There are actually still several floating drydocks from around the same time as this one that still serve with navies and shipbuilders around the world to this day. This particular one in real life however, was retired in 1987. Still after 40 years of usage though

Highly recommend cutting brass out on a slab of glass, tile, or flat stone… something that doesn’t have any give in it so you don’t distort the brass parts cutting them off the sprue

I think it would have been more visually interesting if you had caught the action as the dry dock starts sinking to re-float the ship. That way you could have kept all the massive wooden supports under the keel and hull with the rush of white water surging up from the scuttle cocks and spilling over the dry dock rushing against the battleship's hull. It would have more white water as the currents wash up against the hull like mini-breakers and whirlpools, a much more dynamic scene instead of static and frozen. Yes, I know it would have been extremely challenging and I'm NOT volunteering to give it a try, just brainstorming. Another thought is a technique I use to simulate the battered hull plates on the bow that are caused by heavy waves crashing and buckling the steel plate inwards. It adds a lot of character but you can't let it get too heavy handed and overdone, especially on a Battleship. These buckled plates wouldn't be as prominent and pronounced as on a cruiser. However, if you look at pictures of destroyers these warped plates are a common sight and often VERY obvious.

i'm sure that clear blue tinted resin is tempting, but the water here is totally out of scale: even the cleanest waters do not offer visibility more than 15-20m, let alone the murky waters of a busy harbor. So if you wanted to be true to scale, you would have to make the water totally opaque (as is the case with 99% of 1/700 ship dioramas), or at most, pour several resin layers, starting fully opaque at the sea bed and going gradually more transparent as you move towards the surface. Which would have obscured most of the detail below the surface, but you can't put all your eggs in the same basket. Then again, there is that thing called artistic license, so if the end result pleases you, forget my comment all together :)

Awesome work sir! Thank you for sharing. Also while I know it was a mistake, I really like the depth effect the warped bottom of the epoxy cast makes. So consider it a happy accident rather than a mistake. 😊

please look into a what is called a deburring tool or machinists deburring tool, it is a handle with a free spinning cutting blade that self aligns to an edge and is much safer around delicate parts and your fingers etc. also used by plumbers for copper piping etc, likely should be avail in any hardware store i'd hope. Great work overall though, it came out wonderful

Amazing building But a little tip from a model lover You have to clean the surface after each sand an polish you have very tiny scraches in the next Processing if you dont clean. Rest material from 400 will scratch 600 ore 800. Better Clean. Better shiny
