The beginning of this movie always depresses me. The Ghostbusters went from saving the world to being so broke that they have to perform at children's parties. Also, the kid who says "My dad says you guys are full of crap" is the director's son Jason Reitman, who would grow up to direct Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

It's also odd because the kids at the party want He-Man but by 1989, the original Masters of the Universe cartoons (He-Man and She-Ra) and the toyline had been over for several years (and a 1987 live action movie had done poorly at box office so any sequels were cancelled). A 1990 attempt at relaunching MotU as 'The New Adventures of He-Man' failed with it's very generic sci-fi cartoon and toys (some of the toys were reused with new heads, for the toyline of 1993 Stallone movie Demolition Man, that's how generic they were). The majority of kids in 1989 weren't wanting He-Man. Ninja Turtles was the main craze at that time with it's 1987 cartoon and toyline still doing well and a movie that came out in 1990. Now fast forward to the 2020s and both Ghostbusters and Masters of the Universe franchises are doing great and selling plenty merch too. Turtles as well. Heck, they've even crossed over! Ghostbusters and Ninja Turtles had a comic and currently in toy stores right now there are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles / Masters of the Universe crossover toys. :O

The funny thing about Jason is he didn't set out to follow in his dad's footsteps. He planned to get into med school, but realized it was a mistake. Then he saw Kevin Smith's first film "Clerks", and transferred into film school. Kevin was surprised his little film, a garage band production, inspired the son of a Hollywood filmmaker to get into the biz. I wonder what Ivan thought...🤔

It is a good reason why the officials of New York were so rarely in favor of their services. They literally opened shop when their world was spiking with a massive event that involved the waking of the dead. Once they defeated that rising event inside that old world skyscraper, ghostly activities returned more to the realms of tabloids. And, of course, all the lawsuits that were mentioned about quickly depleted their funds that were made during that spike in activity. It kind of reminds me about how after the days of 9/11, the working class hero became THE heroes of the world to children and stood out during Halloween. However, as months added up, the working class hero lost out to the rising trend of Super Heroes during the rise of that whole onslaught of movie franchises. Same here. These working class heroes with their high tech ray beams fought off and defeated some really crazy things that nobody could deny. Five years later was plenty of time for legal battles and public opinion to wane upon those events and leave the impressionable minds the new generation to favor this He Man and all his cartoony universe to outweigh a super event that had happened during their infant years.

@@jupreindeer Interesting analysis, but the difference between the Manhattan Crossrip and the September 11 attacks is people died in the second REAL LIFE event, and it's memorialized every year. First responders are expected to put their lives on their line, not paranormal exterminators. The thing with the Ghostbusters is they're the smartest people in the room since the paranormal is paranormal, and dumb people don't like being told that they're dumb. As for superheroes, Zack Snyder's take on them (Watchmen, Man Of Steel, Batman V. Superman, Justice League) puts them within the real world and how humanity reacts to them.

@@nsasupporter7557 i think it's mostly because of the slow start that also feels repetitive; In the sense that the business went under and the protagonist are all losers.(only to have happen again in "Afterlife") One constructive critique i agree with is that the movie would have been way better if the 'busters where still in business and the job calls got increasingly destructive in the first act leading to the courtroom scene. Me, i think this movie was great as well. (keep in mind i saw this before the first one) In the first one the antagonist is a more powerful threat for sure, but was a extra dimesonal spirit entity. Vigo being a human ghost from a time where cruelty was a casual sport as jogging is today and the fact he is targeting a child to posses is far more creepy and his defeat by positivity is very poetic.(if slightly overplayed😅)

The birthday party was inspired by the "King of the Ghostbusters fans", a guy named Peter Mosen (he's got a cameo as the guy Ray throws slime on in the restaurant). He showed up to a screening of the original movie with a homemade suit and proton pack and someone from Sony noticed him and he began doing events as Ray Stantz. He even built his own Ecto-1 that looks exactly like the film version. He did it all the way through to the early 1990s. My mom hired him to do my sixth birthday party in 1988, forever solidifying Ghostbusters as my favorite movie ever.

Four really dedicated fans spend lord knows how much money to not only attend in full replica gear with the jump suits, but they hand built this hearse to look like a movie authentic version of the Ecto 1. Somewhere in my photo archives, I even have a shot or two from the event. (It's on some external HDD that is in storage.) They just attended the event on their own. Pipe smoking is an appreciation for a different type of tobacco, like cigars, except pipe smoke is commonly inhaled while cigar smoke isn't. The cultures are generally intertwined, so if you go to a cigar shop, they'll have pipes galore and lots of higher quality loose tobacco kept at proper humidities (unlike cigarette tobacco, which is usually left out to dry and is cheap stuff from North Carolina and places like that).

23:20 When this scene was shot, Harold, Dan and Ernie had to be covered slime which is actually Methylcellulose, a fine powder and when mixed with water it becomes a transparent gelatin and it’s edible. It’s found in frozen mini pizzas and Hostesses Cherry Pies and Burger King puts it in their milkshakes. The hole they climb out of is a junction line and is only a few feet deep. It was shot in November of 1988. Now if you’ve been in New York City in November, it gets as cold as well digger’s asshole (no offense to well diggers). So cold that the slime became chunks of ice. Needless to say it was absolutely miserable. Once it was finished, they discovered that one of the cameras filming the scene had malfunctioned and they had to go back the next night and shoot it all over again. Poor bastards.

Fun fact the scene when all the ghosts start coming out of the woodwork with the slime emerging.. alot of those are left over 84 rift scenes from the first ghostbusters film that they cut out for time. And back then the first film was so rushed to get it to print for theaters there was never a "directors cut" like alot of films that have deleted scenes. So they just used them and edited them in

Side note- the actor who played Vigo the Carpathian was apparently juuuuuuuust a wee bit creepy. Like weird to the same level as his character was. (Not Peter McNichol. He's apparently quite normal.)

I enjoy this movie. The part with the heads freaked me out as a kid. The tools Egon was taking out of the bag when Dana was asking if it was going to hurt Oscar were calipers, a measuring tool. Nothing nefarious, he was probably just going take some measurements of Oscars head. It is true that the simplest answer isn't always the correct one, but it is often the best place to start.

This is a very good sequel. I love the banter between everyone that happens in this film. If you want to see two other film series with very sweet dogs. I recommend The Beethoven Series, especially Beethoven 1(1992) and Beethoven 2nd (1993). It is also directed by Ivan Reitman like this film. It is about a St. Bernard dog. Also, The Shiloh Trilogy, based off of the childrens book series about a very sweet beagle in West Virginia by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Also, if you want to see a great series of men raising a child, I recommend Three Men and a baby (1987) and Three Men and A Little Lady (1990). I finally recommend "Babys Day Out" a very funny family comedy about a baby and three bumbling Kidnappers from 1994. It is from John Hughes. It is like Home Alone with a baby, but much lighter than Home Alone. Great reaction to a decent sequel not given enough credit. By the way, the Ghost Yanosh carriage scene and the fur jacket coming alive gave me chills up my spine since I first watched this when I was 10 in the year 2000.

You mention three Ghostbusters films but there are actually four - in 2016 an all female team took on bustin' duties. It is largely frowned upon and not counted as cannon. The 4th film is Ghostbusters Afterlife which will be followed this year with Ghostbusters Frozen Empire.

I didn't like this as much as the first one, but it has its moments. The 2016 reboot is worth skipping, with the exception of the brilliant comedic performances of Chris Hemsworth and Kate McKinnon. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a lot of fun, and in some ways quite touching. Looking forward to seeing your reaction.

When you say the 3rd movie what 3rd are we talking about the 2016 all female disaster that nearly killed the franchise or 2021 Afterlife that is about to have a sequel release in Frozen Empire. The 2016 movie I believe has no connection to 1-2 but Afterlife was a reboot/continuation from 1-2 and definitely worth a watch

4:33 Yep, that's exactly how science works! If two separate explanations are able to explain the observed data equally well, then we always choose the simpler of the two -- at least until additional evidence is collected that can allow us to better distinguish between the competing ideas.
