So genuine. You can even hear her clearing her throat between singing! And the REGISTER changes. That’s what makes female voices beautiful, actually hearing the natural register changes without any artificial covering.

She was the best. It is too bad there has never been another one to even compare. Many pieces were written for her voice. To listen to her is to learn the proper way it is done. Perfection.

@meltzerboy I've just finished listening to six other versions of this piece, and G-C is the clear winner... to my ears at least! (The only other one that came close for me was Caballe's, because of her beautiful dynamic control.) The scratchy high notes are simply because the recording technology of the time could not capture G-C's brilliance. :D Thank you for posting. :)

There are other beautiful recordings of this song, including those of Caballe, Gigli, and Clara Butt; but G-C's towers above all others.

@sillyboydeux They ARE tubas. This is an acoustical recording, made with a recording horn, not a microphone, and they used the brass instruments to replace the cellos, because the string instruments were not loud enough to register in the recording. Even so, in such cases, the singer had to sing directly INTO the horn, so as to be loud enough. It was not until the 1920's that "electrical" recordings, with the newly developed microphones replacing the old recording horn, became possible.
