My dad was in the USAF from 1950-1971 and toward the end of his career we lived near a major air base, one that the Soviets would have certainly launched a warhead or two at in the event of war. It was years before it occurred to me that the purpose of "D&C" was a (lame) attempt to let us children "hide" from the incoming blast waves (heat, EMP, etc) of an atomic explosion. The school was close enough to the base that it was basically "ground zero." There's no way in hell any of us would have survived a 20-50 megaton nuke going off that close by.
