Problem with First Past the Post voting is that if you don't pick the mainstream/leading person that aligns closest to your beliefs(even if they don't align much at all - ex. Someone on the left voting for Biden) you actively benefit the popular pick that does not align with your beliefs. It'd be like 100 people voting for lunch, with the most popular pick getting chosen. 40 people pick Outback Steakhouse, 40 people pick Salad Works. Even if you dont actually want steak, you are better off voting for Outback if you want, say, a burger/other meat dish, because voting for say, Burger King just means it's easier for Salad Works to win as the "pro meat" vote is being split among candidates that make it impossible for them to actually win. Its why Ranked voting tends to be much more reflective of the wants of the people. Even if no one's number one gets chosen, if the most popular second choice wins it, alot less people are pissed off, and a popular third party pick actually has a reasonable chance of winning.
