I heard that the same was done for branches of major rivers, almost like making linear water highways so that cargo could get faster to the sea. The results are bad overtime, and it seems like a pen in the hand of an elected authority would be very useful there. because all it would take is to move those towns to a new land away from the danger. But somehow nothing of true benefit for the population happens, and the legal process is lengthy, so people walk away and become street beggars or relocate to sewer systems as living quarters, and reproduction areas, or go to the woods.

Problem is, flood plains are very attractive to build on, nice and flat so not much landscaping needed, and no steep slopes to prevent access from highways and railways. Plus in years past the river would also be an important transportation feature, it was how you moved freight and passengers before highways and railways. A village on a hill is isolated, expensive to construct and hard to connect. A village in a valley is cheap to build and easy to connect to other villages.

Well, I live in China and this place have its issues... the biggest one is total poverty where millions have no access to electricity and running water... it’s easy to build random railways and empty cities under authoritarian regime. In democracy, politicians have to explain why those things are actually built. Sometimes those railways are not very useful. Though those look good on the video. The same thing with some super high show off skyscrapers that look good on the photos... the fact is that the same country might have problem with drinking water and hunger... The one you are talking about the one that provides humanitarian aid, help, and so on are the national guard and homeland defence. Cuts in the military budget can levy a toll only on some new weapon devolepment projects or equipment renewing. The us military could take a hit in the budget and saved money could be used instead for strategic investments just like China having long term effects rather than short term and sparking tensions.

I live in Chicago. Labor Unions control the construction of roads. They intentionally use defective concrete. In winter, water pours into cracks and freezes. The freezing water expands the cracks until we get major potholes and other problems. Labor Unions do this because defective concrete insures that they will always have construction jobs in the future. If we let the free market take over, this wouldn't be problem, because of competition. Near my old high school, a quarter mile strip of Potter Road took 3 years to repair. Many people needed that road to get to school (we didn't have school busses). The construction cut off the road and backed up traffic for miles. Meanwhile, Lutheran General Hospital (which is adjacent to Maine East High School) built a brand new 20 story wing within a few months. It's a perfect example of private construction vs government construction. The BI video also (barely) explained the problems with airport regulations.

Keep in mind that the US builds "bridges to nowhere" all the time. All infrastructure projects in this country are not chosen by efficiency, but by whatever special interest group has the most political clout.

That's not a problem with unions, that is bad oversight. The same could happen with a private company cutting corners or trying to milk a lucrative contract.

You'll find that 8 of the top 9 political contributions are from labor unions. Labor unions make money from government contracts and use a portion of the profits to lobby for even more government contracts. Labor unions control the Chicago construction industry. They intentionally use defective concrete and lobby to keep that policy in place. But you are right, the same can happen with businesses taking short cuts. Military corporations are notorious for it. My point is that this lack of oversight would not occur in a free market. If you privatized infrastructure, competition would force oversight.
