Brett Walton, a reporter for Circle of Blue, covers the economics of water in the U.S. He says some communities are adversely affected due by poor water infrastructure due to a lack of forethought, age and maintenance, and a changing climate.

This is why we needed unions and why we still need unions. Corporations and government will continue to tax and profit off of labor and consumers while doing the bare minimum to keep everything afloat. We need to show them who’s really boss: the American people.

All of these are valid points, but how about we also talk about the cost of maintaining water systems as we sprawl further and further out. It's cheap to install these but down the line, you have to spend millions to repair water systems with property taxes collected from only a couple hundred houses.

This is a good point, and resources need to be attributed to making water infrastructure more efficient and easier to maintain. Infrastructure in general hasn’t been modernized for decades, and that infrastructure was designed without consideration for the problems we’re facing today. Costs seem relatively high, but that’s because of our misallocation of resources and wasting them on useless infrastructure. Infrastructure that doesn’t generate or sustain growth is bound to become a liability and lead to its own collapse, taking taxpayers along with it.

Well, we could switch to a resource based economy with no monetary systems. We have the resources needed to maintain our water infrastructure, just not the money. Money is a scam against humanity. We dont need it and never have. And we will keep facing the same problems we do today if we dont get rid of money permanently. Anything else is essentially just kicking the can down the road for someone else to deal with. And i, for one, am entirely sick of kicking the can. Thats how we ended up in this position in the first place. I refuse to do that to anyone else.

My fiance and I moved into a house in the country, and the previous owners were here for 20 years with their family. When we moved in, we had the water tested and there was high levels or iron and a couple other things that were bad that I can't remember at the moment (and they were drinking this). So we ended up getting a full water filtration system put in in our basement, and we have a little drinking faucet on our counter and our fridge is connected. So those two have like 3 or 4 times reverse osmosis on the water. The wife who lived here also had a slight hump on her upper back, and we were thinking that could have been caused by bad drinking water all those years. It is a possibility. Sometimes it's good to get your water tested in order to protect your health.

Hi Joshua! I remember when visiting the US, I always thought, the tap water tasted of chlorine and since the sodas in fast food joints were made from it they too tasted like that. So yea, when I visit, I'll usually buy bottled water too, something I've moved away from because I want to reduce the amount of trash I produce

i am 58. when i was little, i remember when visiting people in BEAUTIFUL rural areas, i had to work the pomp outside by hand to get water. The concept of "turning on a faucet and water comes out" is probably 60 years old for most people in North America. You are young, so, for you, that" turning on your faucet and water comes out" has been around "all your life". just a bit of perspective .

I live in NY. The water is from a mountain origin reservoir. I filter my tap water. I do not drink it directly from the tap like I used to. I am grateful to at least have this much trust in my local tap water supply. Tap water at least contains fluoride which is better for our teeth. Bottled water does not. I know I have it better than most. And it can be improved further. I hope everyone in the world can have access to clean drinking water from the tap that does not required further filtration. This is the sad result of evil corporations maximizing profit at the expense of the environment. Then the bottled water and filtration industries came about, which would not be needed if the environment was conserved and protected decades ago.
