As D-day got underway on Omaha Beach, the situation was looking grim for the Allies. Barely had the first wave of soldiers set foot on the sandy shore when they were subjected to a brutal barrage of German bullets and artillery shells. The naval bombardment they had hoped would clear the way had ended much too soon; the aerial bomb attacks had aimed too far inland, and rockets from landing craft tanks had fallen short of their targets. Months of planning were rapidly coming undone. The Omaha landings seemed doomed to failure, and the infantry was left to bear the brunt of the relentless German defenses.
Pinned down on the crimson-splattered sand by the endless stream of machine-gun fire and wondering if retreat was an option, the troops looked back at the sea behind them. Yet, much to their horror, what they saw was a Gleaves-class destroyer hurtling toward the beach at an alarming rate with thick smoke billowing from its stack, apparently out of control and about to run aground - right in front of the German guns. The soldiers winced in anticipation of the sound of screeching metal when, at the last second, the ship swung round to the left, its guns now directly facing the enemy positions. As the destroyer began unleashing a frenzy of cannon fire at point-blank range, the troops smiled at one another. The Navy was here, and maybe, just maybe, things were going to work out after all…

Memorial Day 2024 was kind of special for me! I was in Bass Pro Shops in Daytona Beach Fl. and ran into and chatted w/3 Veterans all at once and one man said he visited Omaha Beach 2yrs. prior when one of the guys stated he had goose bumps and when he looked at the hair standing up on my arms along w/the goose bumps they knew I was passionate about their stories and appreciative of their service

Thank you for showing a part of the D-Day Invasion that few people cover! Going this close to shore especially as the tide changes and disregard for German mines, shore obstacles and point blank range is another testament to the bravery of our Sailors and determination of the skippers!! Many know about the close support by our Navy in the Pacific. The Close support by Navy Gunners

There was many more destroyers built than other style ships .. plus the captains were alot younger and greener than other ships much like using green soldiers in the invasion vs veteran troops that when shot at would dock down and stay in cover ... destroyers are like an 18 19 year old with a mustang vs a 60 70 year old with a corvette ... the 18 19 yo is gonna be alot wilder .

I hate it when videos of battles talk about one thing and show video of other things. The narrator is talking about destroyers coming close to shore to support troops with gun bombardment. As he speaks they show video of battleships with 16 and 14 in 50 caliber guns in triple turrets. The largest destroyer in ww2 was the fletcher class and it only had 4 5in 38cal guns. Man stop it!

To bad none of the Iowa Class Battleships were sent to participate in the shore bombardments of the Normandy Beaches, the Iowa Class Battleships would have been the biggest warships in tonnage, size, and also firepower whereas all four of the Iowa class battleships were the most heavily armed warships the US and the allies ever had during and after WW2.
@1chish
@1chish 2 ай бұрын
That is one hell of a bragging statement dude. But sorry the Royal Navy had equally powerful ships and some were in the Normandy task force. The Nelson Class battleships also had 9 x 16" main batteries like the Iowas. For the record the Battleships at Normandy were: USS Arkansas - 12 x 12" guns USS Nevada - 10 x 14" guns. HMS Ramillies - 8 x 15" guns. HMS Rodney - 9 x 16" guns. USS Texas - 10 x 14" guns HMS Warspite - 8 x 15" guns HMS Nelson - 9 x 16" guns In other words every Royal Navy battleship outgunned the US Navy battleships. Seeing as you raised this aspect. However having the big guns does not make that ship the most effective as other Royal Navy ships proved. Why do you Yanks always have to make out your kit was the biggest and best 'in the world' when it wasn't?

The special strength of the Iowas was their speed and maneuverability, combined with their range. The Iowas had the maneuverability of ships a fraction of their size. These advantages would give no benefit at Overlord.
