It was interesting to hear Kenny say that in Ineos' place, he would be freaking out considerably more than they seem to be. I couldn´t help thinking about how often Britain has been in horrible situations: Conquered by the Romans, then the Angles, Saxons etc, then the Danes, then the Normans.... then they stood alone against a European army under the genius leadership of Napoleon, and then again were almost the only European nation standing against Nazi Germany at one point ... so they´re culturally no strangers (unlike the US) to the actuality or the imminent threat of wholesale invasion of their homeland. I wonder if there are still cultural traces of the resulting capacity for performance under pressure. It hasn´t admittedly ever won them the America´s Cup, so maybe they´re better on defence than offence? The Battle of Britain was certainly a case in point.... and the colonial nations (and to a degree the US) did do a fair chunk of the heavy lifting, offensive-wise, in the World Wars... not to mention the USSR, of course, without whom I can´t imagine the Allies prevailing against the 3rd Reich.

They never really left. It was their ability to foil in lighter wind conditions that had them stuck dead in the water throughout the regatta. They could still foil in stronger wind conditions like they did in day 2 of the ACWS.

@Glenn Watson Hi Glenn, I didn't have a speed gun at the time, but it was obvious Ben and Co was fast, our fishing boat 120 horse maximum speed 35 knots, we were following the Brits and they were pulling away from us and we couldn't keep up. The Americans a few minutes later, we followed them for a wee while at 30 knots and comfortable. The wind speed at the time was about 10 to 12 knots upwind.

One way to learn more is to take an intermediate sail racing class or start racing, you will learn many of these ideas, particularly for sail trim and sail shape, which is the main topic of this interview, since North Sails is one of the sail makers.

He was also saying that the boats need to be able to change up more quickly and smoothly and radically without losing efficiency (as you inevitably do with, say, a torque convertor). More like a VW 8 speed auto, perhaps.

Any idea why they all have bow sprits? No stay sails.

@@robertewalt7789 They are designed to carry a Code Zero of the bowsprit, but it seems they have no use for them in anything but the lightest of winds, if even then. The rule stipulates a fixed bowsprit and since that is what makes them 75feet, they will probably not change that rule :P Would likely gain some topspeed if they took them of in all but Code Zero weather.
