My sense of what happened is that when insecurity hits home, people are primed to find someone to blame for it, and that allows a demagogue to Target their angst at the 'other', fear turns to anger at Mexicans, El Salvadorans, African Americans, and others forgetting the fact that we are all part of the human family, and the real problem is with allowing corrupt practices to continue. (Of course, there's also the basic trend of population growth.) Survey data from randomly sampled expats would be good evidence.

I think this stems from the enormous expense of college. Almost all the top politicians went to ivy league colleges for law or arts. None of them are blue collar or engineers. Your college major and alma mater in this country mainly depends on your class.
