The Naval Strike Missile (NSM) is an anti-ship and land-attack missile developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
The NSM is a potent anti-ship platform. FLYING AT high-subsonic speed, the missile can engage targets on land and sea and evade radar detection by skimming over the ocean surface or maneuvering around terrain features when flying over land. Moreover, the NSM initiates random flight maneuvers during its terminal flight phase that help the missile evade enemy countermeasures.

NASAMS uses Raytheon’s MPQ-64 radar as it’s sensor and AIM-120 AMRAAM as it’s effector. So I don’t think you could give too much credit to Kongsberg for the development of this system.

Tiny little country, but has some of the best missile tech in the world. NSM, JSM and NASAM can all be considered of the best in class missile systems from the same manufacturer. I've always found it ironic how good Norway is with ammo and missiles and much we try to avoid conflicts in every way. Give Ukraine a bunch of these and you'll have Moskva "accidents" rather frequently.

@@keithanderson5079 Of course they are, what kind of alliance wouldn't do such a thing? Wouldn't be much point in an alliance if it wasn't used effectively. The NSM is for an example developed together with Raytheon technologies for integration with US and NATO standards. Nasam is another curious example, it's developed in Norway, but there are more active systems abroad than domestic. The US and Poland for example have more active installations than Norway. Norway had a strong and solid ammo industry and boat building/Maritime technology when NATO was founded. Of course it would further develop within this sphere when it suits well into the overall strategy. It's just plain good military and business sense. It's been a clear strategy for decades, good on you to see it 👍

This weapon is terrifying for enemy sailors. Imagine 3-4 of these working together to come up with a strike that leaves the enemy no choice but to soak a missile or two. I think the US has a better doctrine. Smart missiles. Swarms of drones, stealthy jets. Conventional cruise missiles would be used in conjunction to strike with small kinetic drones, NSM, Harpoon, air-dropped Mk48 ADCAP, Tomahawk all converging on the target under a storm of static noise on radar. They would overwhelm each Chinese ship with enormous amounts of these weapons. I do believe the USN and its allies are far ahead in warfighting readiness. The Chinese have all the modern kit without as much expertise on how to use it. The USN has at least 90 years experience operating carrier-based aircraft, for example. China? A few years. Hard to overcome that gap. Another difference is in ad Hoc operations. A strike package could have remaining ordnance and be diverted to a secondary target group. That's something coalition aircraft were doing constantly in the Middle East. Our organizations have so much more experience vis-a-vis applying doctrine to the real world. I believe this NSM is the key to guaranteeing that every PLAN ship is not only saturated with ordnance but it all happens simultaneously. This is how the coalition degraded Iraqi C&C in a matter of hours during the Gulf War. Overwhelming force. Hypersonic missiles are powerful but expensive and likely to be able to be semi-reliably countered in the next 10 years. Speed is not what it used to be with aircraft either. They don't fly the SR-71 anymore. The capabilites are mostly contained in the hardware and software, the materials the jet is made of. That's why F-35 doubters are just living in the 1950s.
@swunt10
@swunt10 2 жыл бұрын
nonsense. modern air defense systems have no trouble with defending air threats. that's why swarm or even saturation attacks are the only real anti-ship tactic today. other than that we only have the off chance that the enemy is sleeping at the wheel and doesn't have all his defense system switched on. that's the reality of today. "leaves the enemy no choice but to soak a missile or two" bitch please modern air defense systems have no trouble tracking and defeating hundreds of targets and dozens in the final approach phase at the same time. you would need at least 100 anti ship missiles to defeat a modern anti air frigate like the german Sachsen class

@@swunt10 seriously what are you smoking? The US Navy has without question the best ship based missile defense systems in the world, and they could MAYBE intercept AT MOST a dozen incoming missiles. And those are the Brahmos missiles (30 feet long, over 2 feet in diameter, the Brahmos missile is absolutely ENORMOUS and easily detected from ranges exceeding 150 miles). The NSM on the other hand is 13 feet long, less than 1 foot in diameter, and extremely stealthy. Substandard Chinese radars will have a lot of trouble detecting an NSM in sea skimming mode outside of 8 nautical miles. Can you name ONE air defense system that has EVER prevented air strikes from taking place? No, you can’t. The old adage “the bomber will always get through” still rings true to this day. There has never been an air defense system created anywhere in the world that has successfully prevented air strikes from taking place, all they have done is complicate the process. Now with stealth technology proliferating to most NATO member air forces, China and Russia don’t stand a chance. Just take a look at how well the Russian Air Force has performed in Ukraine. It’s been 5 days and they still have not established air superiority. And that is going up against a country that has ZERO stealth aircraft, and fewer than 100 combat aircraft in their ENTIRE Air Force. Russia has PROVEN to the world over the last week that their military is not anywhere close to being a competent, professional force, and China is even farther behind than Russia. Doctrine and tactics have a HELL of a lot more influence on whether or not a military is successful in combat than technology alone, and the U.S. Navy employs doctrine and tactics that are literally half a century more advanced than China. I don’t know where you got the idea that ANY warship in the world is able to intercept 100 incoming missiles, but it is blatantly obvious you are dreaming, assuming, and hoping, but have absolutely ZERO real world experience in Naval Warfare.

@@swunt10 I mean you DO realize that the German Saschen class frigate only carry’s a grand total of 24 SM-2 (for anti-air AND missile defense) and 32 ESSM missiles, right? And you DO know that if an incoming missile gets close enough to a ship for the ESSM, standard procedure is to launch TWO ESSM’s for every incoming missile? The Saschen class frigate can’t shoot down ANYWHERE NEAR 100 incoming missiles, because it simply can’t carry enough interceptors! Where on EARTH did you get the idea that a warship, ANY warship, has the ability to intercept 100 incoming anti ship missiles? I’m serious that is actually laughable….the US Arleigh Burke class destroyers can carry 16 SM-2’s, 16 SM-3’s, 16 SM-6’s, 64 ESSM’s, and still has the phalanx CIWS or a SeaRAM launcher carrying 21 rolling airframe missiles, and an Arleigh Burke destroyer couldn’t get ANYWHERE CLOSE to intercepting 100 missiles incoming simultaneously. The Arleigh Burke destroyers would be LUCKY to intercept 12-14 incoming missiles simultaneously, which is why each carrier strike group usually has 4 destroyers, PLUS two cruisers (that have even more interceptors than the destroyers!) escorting it.

The Naval Strike Missile does not have a 500 pound warhead. It has a 125 kilogram warhead (276 pounds). This might seem small, but the missile is also equipped with a titanium penetrator to drive the warhead deep into the ships interior before detonating. When striking at the right place, this can cause catastrophic damage to even the largest warships, and could quite possibly rip smaller warships in half.

@willymac5036 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. An F-35 flying in stealth mode will be able to find and target enemy ships, relaying that information back to the nearest LCS, Frigate, or Destroyer, which will launch the NSM. Utilizing it’s shaped titanium warhead, the NSM will drive itself DEEP inside the target warship before detonating. If struck in the right spot, just one NSM is all it would take to sink even the largest destroyers (Chinese type 055). And the ship won’t see it coming until it’s too late. With its small size and stealthy shape, in sea skimming mode the NSM would get within about 8 nautical miles before being detected, giving the target warship less than 45 seconds to detect, track, and launch countermeasures. The NSM is without question a force to be reckoned with.

These anti-ship weapons have Australia written all over them. A top end anti-ship platform that will fit in the stealth F-35 weapons bays. Great for coastal defense batteries as well. Even pacifist NZ would probably want them for coastal defense. Philippines and Taiwan would obviously find tremendous value in these mobile lethal platforms that could be hidden rather easily.

Forget the helicopter aspects of the littoral combat vessels and fill that flight deck with missile launchers and reloaders. 100-130 of those on each ship and they could easily overload the defensive systems of the Chinese fleet vessels.

A helicopter can increase the range of the missiles. That means it could be a system with operational range of 2000 km. Combine that with Recon and it could be a very versatile system.
