Many many years ago (more than 50) sometimes during the summer when the traffic was backed up in one direction - they would stop traffic in one direction and reverse the flow on those lanes. At that time there were bridge sections that were two-lane, two way. When they would get the traffic stopped in the one direction, a police officer would drive down the closed lane standing on the saddle of his Harley (doing about 50 mph) and wave you into the lane behind him to show that it was ok to use both lanes in the one direction. I can still recall that cop standing in that saddle. That, to me was one of the most impressive things that I’d seen.

Actually, according to Mark, the official name is William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge and opened to the public in 1952. Many roads and bridges, etc, have "official" names, and are called a common name that makes more sense. :)

"Mutilating..." 😂😂😂 theres a bridge up by Big Sur that is very high up. As a teen i rode with my sister across it, looking down at sharks below we hit thick fog. The bridge is one lane each way and just a short little side rail. My sister came to a stop crying "i cant drive, i cant see anything!" I had pulled my knees up to my face cringing and screaming "if we get rear ended we will get knocked off an theres Sharks down there. Just driiiiiive!!" ...the ten minutes waiting for the fog to clear enough seemed like an eternity. Trust me i dont like heights either an wouldnt blame you if you wound up mutilating your steering wheel. 😂😂😂

Bridges don't bother me but the westbound Bay Bridge does. You have to actually drive it to experience it. A few years back there were construction upgrades made to this bridge and they never installed the cement jersey walls. The effect is you can drive right off the edge. In some spots near the trestles the jersey walls are still there and the bridge then momentarily feels more secure. Now its creepy but before it was just another bridge.

Drove that bridge a lot going to/from the Eastern Shore to Balto. Two worst times was in a truck and on a motorcycle. Truck had to stay in the far right lane. Sitting up high in a truck, you don't see a guard rail or anything except a real long drop into the drink. Talk about fear of heights. The other time I was on my motorcycle and the wind at the high point on the bridge was crazy. It literally pushed me two lanes over. I thought I was going over the side since there wasn't a whole lot there to keep me top side.

And why exactly is this "the scariest"? I've used it many. I live within 90min of the bay. I think the narrator telling the driver "...oh we're speeding...its speed limit 50".... was the most scandalous part.

Thank you for watching our video but that's no Lady, that's my Wife. I've been over the Chesapeake Bridge many times and I don't think it's scary. I also crossed the Huey Long several times in the '90's and it wasn't scary either. This is what Wikipedia says about the Chesapeake Bridge: Because of its height, the narrowness of the spans (there are no hard shoulders), the low guardrails, and the frequency of high winds, it is known as one of the scariest bridges in the world, especially in higher tractor-trailer trucks.

Two bridges with same type of spans but very different in approach (not to be confused with approach SPANS!) notably the two suspension towers, and one for those having a truss to clearly avoid a second Galloping Gertie/Puget sound bridge tragedy. But it can get v ery windy I've read.

As a child living in Portsmouth, NH, in 1971-'72 we would drive down to visit friends of ours in Bowie, MD. We took the Chesapeake Bay Bridge route to avoid Baltimore. At the time, the span they were driving over in the video was under construction, so we were on the bridge to the left, going to and going from. The span they drove over in the video opened in June 1973, about a year after we moved to Washington State.

I find it funny that people think this bridge is scary. Not making issue with people who have legitimate fears of bridges, heights etc.. it’s just that I grew up there in Annapolis Maryland and have probably driven over this bridge hundreds if not thousands of times. During a period of 6 yrs I was a delivery driver for a large produce company and drove a freight liner (18 wheeler) across and back 12 times a week for service to the eastern shore of Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey. To me the Bay bridge conjures up good memories in a time when life was easier for me and much more enjoyable. Getting old sucks giant ducks 😜
