Wolf advocates believe that wolves have a right to live and roam on the land. Ranchers struggle with the danger they present to their livestock and livelihoods. There is often a tense stand-off between the two sides.
Karin Vardaman is an advocate for protection of wolves in the wild. In her field, cattle ranchers are considered the “enemy.” To her knowledge, she is the ONLY person working towards the protection of wild wolves by working WITH cattle ranchers. She has pioneered long-term strategies for protecting cattle from wolves and thereby wolves from cattle ranchers - strategies that also show ranchers respect and an understanding of their bottom line.
Don Gittleson was skeptical at first. As a lifelong rancher, he was more comfortable taking care of wolves on his own - with his rifle - but that solution is illegal. After the local wolf pack began targeting his herd, he reached out to Vardaman for help. Together, they have been learning what works and what doesn’t to deter this particular local pack while modeling extraordinary synergy between two worlds that are usually at odds with each other.
UN/DIVIDED is a documentary series featuring real stories of people bridging divides.

“You still get people - and on both sides - that don’t trust each other. They think that the other side is lying. The only way that’s gonna change is that we sit down and have conversations.” -Don Gittleson

This channel is still woefully small for how well produced and filmed it is. I hope you folks don’t give up and keep trying to build this. As for this video, this was really eye opening. I wonder if there are more videos outlining the challenges facing both wolf advocates and ranchers - as for that gentleman speaking, I completely agree that ranchers are environmentalists - just in different ways that the detached academic circles would understand

Thanks so much Raven for watching. We're not going to give up no matter how slowly we may grow. The work of bringing opposite sides to the table to think through complex ideas for a solution -- even when we strongly disagree -- is so important right now. Thanks for sharing with your friends and family:)

So what was the solution that you came up with to benefit the rancher and the wolf?

So this piece has already been done... like a lot. Sadly, you won't learn anything new here folks. As a director and filmmaker, I respect production quality and journalistic integrity of this piece, it is top notch. But there is very little to no journalism done on the biological benefits of wolves, their future, and their role in our wildernesses since they were approved for re-introduction. Every piece that has been done about the re-introduction efforts is wholly focused on the ranchers who are, frankly, just a slice of the pie when it comes to wolves here in CO. We have done nothing so far to give the public confidence in this re-introduction effort and pieces like are dangerous in the long run. This can essentially be thrown into the pile of other stories that sow public uncertainty. We need to start focusing on the story of the wolves, not the ranchers. Ranchers have had a blessed life compared to these creatures and yet there is virtually no word on the subject of mass culling and extinction of wolves in Colorado. edit: that line about ranchers being environmentalists was extremely misleading. I get it, but the definition on one side can be completely different than the other. THERE IN LIES YOUR CORE ISSUE. That is your story. Not this directionless kumbaya crap.

@@Reed411 thank you SO MUCH for your eloquent and truthful critique of this video. I found this one sided video extremely upsetting. I couldn’t express it, but you said exactly what I wish I could have said. Btw I believe there was a documentary on KZfaq I believe it was called “The wolves of Yellowstone” that beautifully illustrated the immense environmental benefits of the reintroduce of wolves in Yellowstone. If I recall correctly about 200 native species, some very invaluable like the beaver, came back just by reintroducing them. The complete documentary is no longer available on KZfaq but a 5 minute excerpt of it called “How Wolves Saved Yellowstone” is and is quite informative. 🩶🐺🩶

@@nansealove9000 Thank you! I appreciate that. The Wolves of Yellowstone was a good documentary, unfortunately the broader anti-wolf communities have rallied behind that film as “leftist fake news”. Proving once and for all that no amount of science or fact based reporting will persuade anyone of anything. It’s deeply ingrained culture and nothing but a paradigm shift in their culture could change that…. Unfortunate.

The land belongs to the wolf's not the ranchers. They where here first. Put donkeys with the herd they will kill anything that looks like a wolf. Or get cattle dogs.

Thank you! Hearing ranchers care about their livestock they sell to be killed and eaten is so incredibly offensive. And claiming they are environmentalists. Never been so offended on youtube!

Hi there King Pina and Nan sea Love. I understand, this issue is difficult to see from the other side, whatever we believe. I think there's something important we miss when we don't engage with the opposite viewpoint at all. These two couldn't be more different and are finding that there are ways to support one another's larger agendas while still protecting the willife/farm life. Do you think there could be something beneficial to the world from the partnership?
