The US would have great productivity if we had better healthcare, vacation, & maternal/paternal leave among other things. It's no surprise that a happy person tends to be a more productive one, why the US hasn't caught onto this is likely attributed to greed, sadly.

If only people were less greedy... Gosh socialism will never work as long as we still have this "greed" thing... How can we engineer this "greed" out of people? Maybe if we satisfy their every temporal need so that they are free from want the won't have a reason to be greedy. Isn't it true that once a person has all they need to sustain their own life they cease to be greedy? Won't that fix the problem and bring on Utopia? Or could it be the politicians promising healthcare, vacations, paternal/maternal leave among other things are the greedy ones... Could it be that they're giving you goodies at the expense of the tax payers so that they may win elections and maintain power? What if these goodies come at the cost of high taxes and burdensome regulations? What if, because of a politician's greed, he/she kills the economic goose that lays the golden, taxable eggs? What if before that could happen the goose flies elsewhere to warmer, friendlier climates? How do politicians keep their promises then?

The whole American concept of earning vacation is stupid. I worked 16 years at one place and "earned" 3 weeks of paid vacation. That place went out of business and with it all my vacation. Now at new job it will take 10 years to get back to 3 weeks. F-ing stupid. We live in the richest nation in the world. We should have 5 weeks paid and make it a law.

I worked for a small company for 33 years and only got 2 weeks paid vacation per year. It has always amused me when people say how priviliged and lazy Americans are. Many Americans have to have 2 jobs just to afford healthcare and the new "ObamaCare" only helps the extremely poor and is not a good system because it is not standardized in all 50 states.

Americans work themselves to death so they can earn more to buy more. Consumerism at its finest... And since wages are pretty low (compared to other industrialised countries), more work is required to compensate. Not to mention the exorbitant amount of debt many have racked up, two or more cars, college, medical expenses and so on. So it's either working yourself to death or going into poverty.
@GeneralBlackNorway
@GeneralBlackNorway 10 жыл бұрын
Here in Norway my family has one car, I live home and walk to the college that is for free. I took a up a student loan from the government run company and put it in the bank and earn money off the interest rates. I can pay back the loan when I'm done studying and have money left from it. Though I might keep it because it has good conditions! My parents payed off their last debt before I was born. Medical expenses don't really exist here much. We do have medical insurance on top of that though.

Here in Panama we have 30 days free and we can also have 20 days off troughout the year if your boss approves your reasons, whether they are familiar reasons, medical conditions etc. Commonly in public insitutions you can decide not to have vacations one year but saving them for the next one or so on (limit is 4 years) or you can also have 15 days off and save the rest for the next year or for another moment of the year you decide. This are payed vacations and because we are such a little country with hostels and hotels everywhere, average good transportation, tropical climate, high lands if you want some fresh cold air and good cheap food, expenses are not damn high! A bus from one fronteer to the other costs about 50$, a complete and traditional meal may be between 5$-10$ and comfy inn rooms can be between 25-40$ almost anywhere

This is just another example of how the US crushes its working class. Even going by the most conservative estimates if American wages had increased at the same rate as our productivity over the last 50 years the minimum wage in the US would be about $18. How do you know you’ll live to see another day? You slave away at a job you despise, complaining constantly, hating the largest portion of your life for a faint hope that someday you might get a sliver of paradise. Why do I want to wait until I’m 70 and having my butt wiped to live a little? It’s not wrong and it’s not unnatural to explore the world. Every culture throughout history has explored the world. Retirement and JOBS (just over broke) is a scam.

I agree, vacation is something that is needed... being a college student, I dunno what I'd do without what little vacation time I get, though what I get during the semester barely feels like vacation at all, as I tend to be assigned homework to do during the "vacation", so a lot of the time, the only break I get is the summer and winter breaks between semesters... if I didn't get that, I think I'd die from overstress

agreed with the vacation time, my vacation "summer and winter break" consists of a few days here and there where i get time off from work, and when i am at school i work the same hours i do when i am off. As of yet i have not had a real vacation where i was able to just relax and not do anything. The last three years my gf and her family along with myself have gone to the coast to fish, every time i ask for a week off from work, or well actually just five to six days but it feels like a week to me, but even though i am there for relaxation i have had to do some form of homework or stress over a test when that vacation is up, always something on the horizon that keeps me from having a real one, so i study for 30 or so hours during that vacation time and its not ever offered where i work and i dont get payed so months of savings go into this "vacation"

My homeland of America has a big problem with conformity. I think we have let the concept of "most powerful nation in the world" go to our heads and in turn we think we're doing ok when in reality we totally suck at even the most basic concepts of the human factor. Our healthcare is bullshit, we treat or elders like trash, our children are indoctrinated by faceless beliefs before they can even properly rationalize things, our common use of technology is disconnecting us from things rather than reinforcing those connections they were intended for, and let's not even discuss our average diet. The list goes on and on. I think it's just that the US thinks itself the big boy on the block these days and doesn't like to admit that all these smaller nations know more about how to truly live than we do, but we have clearly fell far behind. Personally I force my employers to give me at least 10 days vacation per year and that's not counting sick days which nobody can plan for but you wouldn't believe some of the rules some employers here are making these day on that front, it's scary stupid.

Meh, I just wrote that on impulse anyway (I'm not a kid, but I agree that I'm an idiot despite what my peers say), so don't worry about it. That people 'get' 14 days of paid vacation time, but only use 10, shows the divide between corporate management and local management. The corporate folks give just barely enough resources to local management to keep doors open. Local management then has to use immoral and illegal tactics to keep employees from using paid vacation time, or get fired for not opening the store on days it is supposed to be open even though there is not enough staff to keep the doors open. Corporate management pat's itself on the back for being so generous with their employee's paid vacation time, but then creates conditions that make using that paid vacation time virtually impossible.

One thing I have notice here. When it comes to upper management they look at employes and their goal is not to get the job done but to see them working. If they concentrate more on getting the job done it would be much better. Think about it if you are given 8 hours in a day to perform a task, but you can do the same task in 6 hours that would mean that you should still get those 2 hours to relax. That's not how it normally goes, you are expected to be doing something for 8 hours. That's why a lot of employes will just work slower so is less stress and complete the 8 hours.

I have had 3 vacations this year.. 2 of them 18 days long and one 11 because of my schedule. That's 5 weeks I've taken off work - all paid... And I just got approved for the last week of the year, so... I love my job. Once I realized how much vacation time they offered, I decided that I will keep it as close to zero as possible. Vacations are awesome - even if you don't go anywhere. Work to live; don't live to work.

I’ve been working at my company for 3 years and only have 1 week of paid vacation. I’m currently looking for another job because of how miserable I am. 5 days a year isn’t enough. I’m stressed and overworked. The funny thing is, when I was hired I was promised 2 weeks vacation after 2 years and 3 weeks vacation after 5 years, but they decreased those benefits half a year after I was hired and there was nothing we could do.

I was unemployed last year. This year I'm working as a contractor, so I have NO benefits and NO time off. So I'm taking my first vacation since starting work here in April: two weeks of unpaid vacation. Some of that's mandatory before the company will be shutdown over the holiday for maintenance. (Everyone but maintenance will be away. I hope they get compensated and paid days off afterwards!)

I had a job for 5 years without vacation time. I couldn't stand the work environment anymore and left, and even though we are financially okay, and I am able to focus on self exploration, housework, and volunteer work... people treat me like I'm a criminal. I might as well be a drug dealer, because I'd get more respect. I personally don't get why people can't mind their own business, and why a 48 hours work week is worth being able to go on a 5 day cruise once a year. I'd rather work less and do free/cheap activities more. And personally, I find it a more valid life choice. I don't get why other people are so proud of working so much and so sure that it's the only way to live. I'd rather spend more time with my loved ones.

You scratch they're back, yet they don't scratch yours. You see my analogy, they could show you that you have a purpose at you job rather than treat you like a number. I understand the lack of long vacations, but the fact that the short ones aren't paid is a little bit disrespectful to the employee, when a good majority of them are working harder than they have to most of the time. I see both sides of the debate, but, I think the Big Corporations can afford to give paid vacation.

Many young Australian take a big camping trip around 18 for four to six weeks. Then again with a better trip in their early to mid twenties, then again in their late twenties, and again with a family holiday or more expensive non-family holiday in their mid thirties. I saved two weeks each year for three years and then took a big holiday in Europe. Twelve weeks were fully paid through leave accrual over that and the previous three years. Then I had another four weeks unpaid on top before I finally returned to my work. Worth every penny for the experience. I won't ever take such a large holiday again, but I can't wait for the next trip away.

I observed in academics, everyone gets lots of leaves in all universities. I don't know about industries though. Non-research staff take sick leaves every week. I don't know what's the problem here. Only working people we see all the days (including most of the vacations) are international students and some international faculty. I pity you say you having less number of holidays. We don't even get Saturdays off in most of the developing countries. And you speak about the stress Americans are facing! Although you may dislike this comment, what I said is true.

We live in a country where Walmart was picking up donations to FEED it's own employees because their BILLIONS of dollars in profit apparently isn't enough to give a decent pay to its own employees. That's why "work gets in the way" for most Americans. Putting in an absurd amount of hours to make just due. You think Walmart is the only business that hits record high profits and pays an absurdly low wage to its employees? There are many that still pay below 11.50 an hour and in many cases not even pay for "Breaks/Lunches" that people DO NOT take after working 12-14 hours straight, because they're forced to keep going otherwise risk being fired. Just to go to another job that does the same damned thing.

And it benefits the whole country because I'm less prone to stress-related diseases that would cost the healthcare system money that would in turn increase the fees for my health insurance. Of which my employer pays half here in Germany. Everyone profits from paid vacation. And in all my jobs after uni, I got 30 days of paid vacation time (which is quite common here). Currently, it's an employers market and they do tend to take advantage of workers' fear of losing their job, so I don't expect this to change anytime soon. On a side note, I recall when I was working in Belgium, how they were adamant about taking breaks and a proper lunch break. During break, they were on break - work wasn't typically discussed, and they were away from their workstation (unless there was an emergency). However, when they were at work, they worked hard, were focused, and highly productive. At the end of the day, unless there was an emergency, they dropped what they were doing and went home. People came in on time and left on time, usually not early or late (unless it was scheduled for a reason). I was impressed by all this. If they didn't work so hard during work hours, I wouldn't have been, but they do. The other problem with the US model is that, yes, we are the most robust economy in the world (for the most part), but most of our wealth goes to the top executives and CEOs. The workers see little of it. That's different in most other parts of the developed world where there isn't nearly as much of a gap in wages. In Japan, for instance, the average income for CEOs of large corporations were around $1 million per year, compared to the $12 million a year of comparable US CEOs (globalmarketresearch). Some US CEOs receive obscenely higher payouts, even if their companies fail. While I think most people are OK with top execs receiving higher pay, because you get out what you put in, they DON'T deserve what they currently get.

Luckily my company is owned by a French company so I get way more vacation than most people I know. 2 weeks at Christmas time, 13 days accrued even for brand new employees, and at least 10 more holiday days. And more every year you work there. I'm not complaining! And I do take mine. There's some amount of displeasure in the ranks if you take too much vacation, but I don't care, I earned it, I'm taking it!

I grew up in a working class family. Only my dad worked, so we literally never took vacations. We never even went on 'field trips' if you will, unless it was for something like going to a doctor or a job interview. Because I intend on going into the creative sector, I'm going to need that time off, so I'm planning to arrange a way to be financially covered while I'm not working, unless my employer offers a salary or paid vacation.
