Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears, While we all sup sorrow with the poor; There's a song that will linger forever in our ears; Oh! Hard times come again no more. 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary, Hard Times, hard times, come again no more. Many days you have lingered around my cabin door; Oh! Hard times come again no more. While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay, There are frail forms fainting at the door; Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say Oh! Hard times come again no more. 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary, Hard Times, hard times, come again no more. Many days you have lingered around my cabin door; Oh! Hard times come again no more. There's a pale drooping maiden who toils her life away, With a worn heart whose better days are o'er: Though her voice would be merry, 'tis sighing all the day, Oh! Hard times come again no more. 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary, Hard Times, hard times, come again no more. Many days you have lingered around my cabin door; Oh! Hard times come again no more.

Imagine a world where the United States of America existed in the middle ages, where pioneer yeomen ran the farmland and pastures in the countryside, while merchants gathered at the marketplace in free cities. Cataphracts and pikemen guard the White Palace and the Capitol, while naval fleets patrol the Grand Mississippi Canal. A republic akin to the Holy Roman Empire and Venice combined, what a sight to behold.

Let us not forget our history. A land where other humans are treated as property sold like cattle and could be murdered at the mere whim of their owners. Where a significant minority will eventually insist on what they believe to be their innate racial superiority and "property rights" - and drag a whole country into a brutal, unnecessary and fratricidal war in which 3/4 of a million men will perish. Think about that. When Foster wrote this parlor song in 1854 his artist's soul had already intuitively plumbed the deep schisms and fault lines that ran just below the surface...

The Virginia yoeman with his longbow on his wall if the crown should call him up for service. The cowboy with his light Mongol style bow and saber watching over his herds by night. Every year driving his stock to the towns along the Mississippi river system for sale. The merchants plying up and down the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and Delaware rivers in great gallyes for cotton, lumber, livestock and grain. The isolated monistries in the Sierra Nevadas and the Appalachians with monks making their sweetly solemn latin chants. The heavily armored marines with pole axes and longswords gaurding the elected monarch and the assembly of the countless barrons, dukes, lords and magistrates from counties and duchies and free cities across the country. The uneasy peace that followed the crusades against the heathen Mayan city states. The exotic fascination of the gentry with everything Mesoamerican, mirroring Western European ideas of "orientalism". The Marco Polo equivalent that served in the court of an Inca emperor and swears he saw giants, dragons and men with wings and seven heads in South America. The maps with monopodes and dog headed men, giants and the kingdom of prester John in the Amazon basin. The gothic cathedrals of Boston, Philidelphia and New York. The countless inns and pubs with songs ringing out and the smell of ale and cider reaching to the street outside. The old story of a group of heretics that escaped the sword and fled into the desert never to be seen again, led by one Joseph, the son of a smith. The churches compromise on African slavery, that allowed for Africans to be imported, so long as they where promoted from slaves to "free" serfs upon arrival. The sagas and chronicles of the first settlements in North America by the Norse in the 10th century ad, 3 and a half centuries before the imagined present.

The maps with monopodes and dog headed men, and the kingdom of prester John in the Amazon basin.

It's by Stephen Foster, a writer of well known folk songs, often referred to as 'the father of American music'. This piece is: "Hard Times Come Again No More", 1854 As such, it has likely been the inspiration for many over the years, not the least of which being CCR.
