The "alligator lizards in the air" line, as some have already noted, is about cloud shapes that he remembers from his childhood. Funny, how snippets of memories from our childhoods last with us our entire lives. I'm 64 now but I was almost six years old and my mother was getting ready to shove me out the door for school in the morning. I very clearly remember standing in front of our couch in the living room and my mother was helping me get my jacket on. This morning was different, however, as my mom was upset and crying. I asked what was wrong but she just kind of shrugged it off and sent me on my way. That would have been the morning of November 23rd, 1963, the morning after JFK was assassinated. I didn't understand until years later. Ever since I read what the "alligator lizards" line meant it reminds me of that morning in my childhood.

Wiki - "Dewey Bunnell, the song's vocalist and writer, has said that the lyric "alligator lizards in the air" in the song is a reference to the shapes of clouds in the sky he saw in 1963 while his family was driving down the coast from Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, California, where they had a flat tire. While his father changed the tire, his brother and he stood by the side of the road and watched the clouds and saw a road sign for "Ventura".[2] In the booklet for the boxed set, Highway, he states that the song "reminds me of the time I lived in Omaha as a kid and how we'd walk through cornfields and chew on pieces of grass. There were cold winters, and I had images of going to California. So I think in the song I'm talking to myself, frankly: 'How long you gonna stay here, Joe?' I really believe that 'Ventura Highway' has the most lasting power of all my songs. It's not just the words - the song and the track have a certain fresh, vibrant, optimistic quality that I can still respond to".[3] The song has a "Go West, young man" motif in the structure of a conversation between an old man named Joe and a young and hopeful kid. Joe was modeled after a "grumpy" old man he had met while his dad was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi at Keesler Air Force Base.[2] He also stated "I remember vividly having this mental picture of the stretch of the coastline traveling with my family when I was younger. Ventura Highway itself, there is no such beast, what I was really trying to depict was the Pacific Coast Highway, Highway 1, which goes up to the town of Ventura."[4]

That signature guitar lick uses techniques called pull-offs and hammer-ons, which do indeed require some practice and dexterity. Once again Lex’s ears picking up all the important stuff! Btw, alligator lizards are all over Los Angeles, where the Ventura Highway is Rt 101 which runs through the Valley north to Ventura

@@onsesejoo2605 Yes, it is. A 12 string has the 4 lower strings, E A G D, paired with their higher octaves. The higher 2 strings, B & E, are paired with the same note and typically use the same string gauge for each pair. This little run is done on the higher 2 pairs of strings. Dewey doesn't use the E, A, G, or D in the riff. Like an idiot, my first guitar was a 12-string and I played Eagles and America. Made it kinda hard to learn!

Back when the song was written there wasn’t that much traffic and the Ventura Highway was a beautiful roadway, lined with Eucalyptus trees, with wide-open spaces on both sides. Those days are long gone. The Ventura Hwy no longer exists, it’s been replaced by the Ventura freeway/Highway 101, though the vibe still lives when you listen to the song

Sometimes the best answer to "what is this line about?" is that the writer was looking for something that rhymes. Alice Cooper actually complained in one line of "School's Out" that: "Well, we got no class, and we got no principles, and we got no Innocence. W can't even think of a word that rhymes!" Also, I've always thought that creating imagery is a part of the process. Incomplete thoughts; word associations. A band that comes to mind who I think does this a lot is YES. (Go listen to a lyric video of Roundabout) Lots of imagery in that one made up incomplete thoughts and word associations that give you a mental picture that the writer is trying to invoke. In this song, the writer, Dewey Bunnel, said he remembers riding on the Pacific Coast Highway with his parents when he was a kid. Looking out the window at cloud formations, he remembered he saw "alligator lizards in the air". Can't go wrong with America. Great stuff!

THis is probably one of my all time favs. One of the few songs that I classify as transcendent. It just takes me out on the side of the road - I can smell the petro in the air, feel the pavement vibrating, and that unique sound of traffic in several layers passing thru your ears. Kind of magical to me. Love it as much all of these decades later.

I have a more recent strong memory of this song. 3 of us were working late into the evening, waiting for a software update to finish, a little punchy because we hadn't ate dinner and it was now around 9 PM. Our supervisor came out with his guitar as he sometimes did and was just strumming. I had recently bought "America's Greatest Hits" and I just started singing it and he knew the words better than me, but not all of them. We sang the first verse or so in a dimly lit office.

But this is about part of Highway 101, the Ventura Highway (which is now called the Ventura Freeway in some spots) a main highway from Santa Barbara, through Ventura County (where its name was mainly derived) and through LA. For most of the ride you can see the ocean and beaches and mountains and other sights. it is a beautiful ride. One of the iconic things to do in california is to take a convertible on ride down the Ventura Highway on a sunny Saturday. You never know how that day will go,.

Watching Lex react to songs always reminded me of something that I couldn’t quite put my finger on and I think tonight I figured it out. There was an episode of Friends where Phoebe and Rachel went jogging in the park and Phoebe was just running like a little kid having fun and she told Rachel to do the same, that she would enjoy it more. And the two of them went jogging through the park high stepping, arms waving in the air like they just didn’t care. And that’s what I think of when I watch Lex in some of these reactions, just doing her own thing and enjoying it. Love it, you two are the best.

Well technically if you want to know how they're doing it. It's called a series of pull-offs and hammer-ons with picked notes here and there on the acoustic guitar fingerboard with a second acoustic guitar strumming the rhythm. Sounds beautiful.. you guys are beautiful too!

Thx! Ventura blvd was a highway before it was incorporated into the grid. Before that it was the wagon wheel road from LA to Ventura! It’s history goes back to early indigenous people!

This is my hit the road, just cruising, feeling loose, romance with the wind, music on the radio, nothing but me, driving away from it all, though I never would. The music sounds better when you can stand and dance

It’s a sweet lil hammer on/pull off lick with a dope strum pattern of a couple chords backing it. Separately they’re not altogether difficult, but together it blends so well. Way before my time, but I do love this band. Great pick, guys.

Alligator Lizards actually are "endangered reptiles native to the Pacific coast of North America", including Southern California, where Ventura Highway is located (a stretch of coastal highway US 101 near Ventura California). In the song, he's actually referring to only a small portion of what is called the Ventura Freeway, not the Ventura Highway, but the songwriter, Dewey Bunnell was remembering back to an experience he had, as well as the way he felt, when he was young, traveling down this stretch of coastal highway with his family. So, when talking more about "alligator lizards", he's referring to the cloud formations he saw, and how the ocean breezes pushed them around to make them look like alligator lizards, floating in the sky.

I miss the Ventura Highway, rolling through the low hills around Calabasas as the sun goes down, listening to tunes on the radio. The 101 freeway is the Ventura Highway. Ventura and Vineland. Nice. I used to play tennis at the Racquet Center there for years, before they tore it down to put in a grocery store and shops.

Have you ever looked up at the sky to see cloud formations? I aways thought that is what was meant by alligators and lizards. I just love this song by America. It feels so easy and free.

I always though it referred to the Ventura Freeway (US-101) as it rolled through LA, but it’s too laid back to be referencing that. The song sounds more like the Pacific Coast Highway that runs up the western coast of California. It’s such a chill song.

Its gotta be the 101 from the conejo grade on the east thru the open ag fields of the oxnard plain then along the ocean from Ventura to Carpenteria and Summerland. Great piece of road, mostly uncrowded.

Notice that America used the words "Purple Rain" in this song that was recorded in 1972. That was a full TWELVE YEARS BEFORE Prince used those words for his song.

Love the guitar riff in this song. Dewey Bunnell, the song’s vocalist and writer, has said that the lyric “alligator lizards in the air” in the song is a reference to the shapes of clouds in the sky he saw in 1963 while his family was driving down the coast from Vandenberg Air Force Base near Lompoc, California where they had a flat tire. While his father changed the tire, he and his brother stood by the side of the road and watched the clouds and saw a road sign for “Ventura”.” (Wikipedia, “Ventura Highway”)

The Ventura Freeway is a freeway in southern California, United States, running from the Santa Barbara/Ventura county line to Pasadena in Los Angeles County.
