Hello and welcome to the vlog! Today, I am going to discuss my experience with the medical system in Melaka, Malaysia. Since medical in the US is too expensive, I wanted to explore how cheap and accessible the doctors of Malaysia would be for a tourist. I went to an eye doctor to get glasses and a dentist for a general teeth cleaning (scaling) to discuss my thoughts on the American medical system versus the Malaysian medical system. Is medical tourism a good thing in Malaysia? Well, let's find out!

A proper eye doctor in Malaysia is a medical doctor, and we call them ophthalmologist. They will operate from a clinic and would not be selling stuff like glasses, etc. Lee is most likely an optometrist and he is licensed to conduct eye exams and prescribe corrective lenses.

Yes. Sometimes you get discounts for 'no reason' in Malaysia. When you are paying, they use the calculator, then they might say, we give you 10% discount. You thank them and say oh, I didn't know there is a discount. If you ask them why, they would say we are having an offer. You look around the shop and the front and there is no advertising that they are having discounts. I think it's really they give a small discount to customers they like to show their appreciation.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened here. I genuinely felt like he was just the nicest person, and I would have paid him more just cause I liked his character, but instead, he helped me out. The Malaysian people are truly the best!!

Yes! Malaysia is an easy country to travel to because of all the English as well. When I went to doctors in Mexico and South America, I had to research and try to find English speaking ones, but in Malaysia, it's almost a given they speak English! 🤯

When my daughter had to go to the emergency at an Austin Hospital (Texas), she said the attending doctor was extremely attentive and caring. The doctor sat down and spent time explaining to her what her medical issue was and even printed out a whole stack of notes for her to read up on; rather than just ask her to google it. And the most amazing part which I dont think I've ever encountered before, was a week later, the hospital called my daughter up just to find out how she was doing and whether the medication given was helping her to recover! I salute that hospital and the doctor!!!

Awww, that is what I wish every doctor would do around the world, and I hope that your daughter is doing better now. I, too, have experienced really great doctors and physician's assistants that have sat down, talked, and made sure everything was good. Unfortunately, I have had to deal with emergency situations and hospitals all too much in the US, and we have seen really good to just semi-okay. The good part about the US is, if you go to a private hospital, they have extra incentive to do well and take care of patients because it effects their bottom line. The bad news is the cost and how much insurance covers. You can tell us the name of the hospital so we can recommend it to people! We need that in the US! Also, if you didn't know, I am from Texas😊

This is SO true! Honestly, I kind of had to get used to this culture a little, but it comes from such a loving place of just wanting the best for the people around them. I truly appreciate all the Malaysians that have been willing to share their expertise because who is better to recommend places than the people that live there??

For the dental work done (scaling), pretty sure the dentist did not just use a waterpik but an ultrasonic scaler with a water jet to remove the tartar deposits. If you felt a little sensitive but clean, thats probably what she used. For more in-depth eye check-up, go and see an opthamologist. Prices range from est RM200 to 400. Dont know about Melaka but if you come to KL, there are a number of eye specialist centers.
@ThisIsDrewFerguson
@ThisIsDrewFerguson 23 күн бұрын
That is actually really good to know cause it didn't make sense that it was a normal water pik, so I'm sure you are right. Also, we spent like 5 months in KL and just procrastinated so we ended up going in Melaka. Next time I come through, I may do doctor stuff and check up as well. I really appreciated the care here.

You're right you need to go to a proper doctor if you need a proper eye health check or hv an issue wth your eyes other than vision that just a visit to an optometrist can fix. I hv the best experience myself when i was in KL. I went to ISEC hospital located at Mid Valley. Had the best experience there with a Dr. David Woo. He's given me the most informative diagnosis patiently answered all my questions, alleviate my fears n i walked out of there a much more informed person about eyes n how to prolong lifespan of our eyes as age deteriorates them. All in all .. my best experience wth an eye doctor is in Malaysia.🎉😊

My last doctor I saw recently did not seem like he sat and listened to me. I felt very rushed, especially since the computer system was down. It wasn't their fault, but I felt a certain way. We are wanting to move to Malaysia. Hopefully, we can make our first trip soonish before we plan the move.

We differentiate those people testing your eyes to buy glasses and those doctor performing surgery eg removing cataract
@ThisIsDrewFerguson
@ThisIsDrewFerguson 17 күн бұрын
In the US, the people that sell glasses need no qualifications. Then, you go to a separate eye doctor for the prescription, and then, yet again, another place if you need surgery. Haha! The US makes sure you pay as many people as possible! Capitalism!

@ThisIsDrewFerguson here the GP sells you medicine. In North America, you take the prescription to pay the pharmacy for the medicine. Unnecessary waste of time. Pharmacy here is for those willing to buy higher price supplements or over the counter medication. They also sell food stuff and toiletries.

@@ThisIsDrewFerguson my dad love asam pedas but we aren't really good at cooking it.. at the stall or restaurant a piece of fish asam pedas in my area would cost around rm7 per piece.. so for 4 people it would cost around rm28 so my dad just bought the kuah/asam pedas gravy for like rm2.. bought fresh fish at the market and cook them together.. that way we can add more fish pieces enough for us at less price.. we are not poor but just lack cooking skill.. 😅
