View more information about 'Putting Them First' at causemarketing.com/commercial... In 2010, American Airlines launched a pair of “support the troops” commercials. The ads began airing on Memorial Day weekend and were re-released to coincide with other holidays associated with military recognition, including the 4th of July, Veterans Day, and Thanksgiving. During the same year, American Airlines became the ‘official airline of the USO,’ an organization which supports members of the United States Armed Forces and their families.
American Airlines describes the ads as “a public gesture of gratitude and a tribute to those in uniform, veterans and their families.” Titled ‘Putting Them First’ and ‘Thank You,’ the two TV commercials were filmed in a busy airline terminal and gate area at Dallas/Fort Worth airport.
In ‘Putting Them First,’ a young African American woman wearing a marine camouflage-style uniform is invited to pre-board. While moving to the front of the line, the young woman appears embarrassed by the preferential treatment until a senior citizen rises and formally salutes. The active marine and (implied) veteran acknowledge one another respectfully.

I was wearing my Combat Veteran Vietnam ball cap to a Vietnamese Tet Celebration in San Diego CA. A young man came over to me with his grandfather and said. "My grandfather is embarrassed because he cannot speak English very well but, he wants to thank you for fighting for his country!" Wow! That was emotional to me!

@@MyNameIsWes that's a pretty harsh thing to say dude. Not all men and woman that served were baby killers. Some lost their minds over there. If you have served in any combat ever you'd know it's hard to deal with. I'm not saying that the people who did bad things are good but there are men and women all over the world that are baby killers. How about giving a little respect for men and women that put their lives on the line and who had and are still dying for their country. And also don't presume to know what happens unless you were there. Go crawl into that warm bed or even a cardboard box of safety while brave men and women die to fight

On my way home once from another routine business flight a soldier on standby ended up sitting next to me in the middle seat. His wife and infant were in the back row in middle seats of their own, obviously standby passengers. I offered to switch seats with her so they could sit together and gladly sandwiched myself in that back middle seat for the two hour ride home. One of my better moments.

flying home from San Francisco to Newark in 1972, i had an aisle seat in coach and when a pretty young lady with her young child on her lap sat in the middle seat. as the window seat was already occupied, she asked the attendant if there wer two empty seats so her child didnt have to stay on her lap. when the attendant said no, i asked was there a single empty seat. the surprised smile i got from the young lady more than made up for me now being in a middle seat. and next to me was an elderly woman who seeing my uniform, asked where i was returning from. i told her Vietnam and she couldnt have been more respectful. and she was great company during the four hour flight.

When I returned from Operation Enduring Freedom in 2006, I had a stopover in Washington DC for an "out-brief" before going to Ft Bliss, Texas to turn-in my gear. I had a large backpack and two very heavy duffel bags, loaded with my helmet, body armor, uniforms and other miscellaneous gear. It was a struggle for me to move all this in the long, narrow line I was in to check-in for my flight. I felt embarrassed because I was not moving in the line as fast as the others who were behind me wanted me to go. At the end of the line, a father and son, who had just finished their check-in, walked straight towards me and said "Thank you for your service". They then stayed with me all the way through the line, helping me with my bags, until I reached the ticketing agent. They both shook my hand and walked away. I was really moved by their thoughtfulness and assistance. Later, I couldn't help but think how the returning servicemen from the Viet Nam war never received such kind treatment -- they were spat on and called baby killers wherever they went. It was a terrible time for our country. To the father and son I met that day; gentlemen, it was MY honor to serve you.

We, in Texas, are still trying to change that reception. There are young military in whom I had little confidence until I saw how they greeted the WWII veterans we accompanied to Washington to view their monument. I met and spoke to a number of these new defenders and my feelings and opinion changed completely. Our country military wise, is in good hands.

Back in 2009, I was returning from deployment in the middle east for my two week of stateside leave. The flight I was scheduled to take off from Atlanta to the Twin Cities (an AA flight), it was delayed and then overbooked, in which case I was put on a standby list. This normally wouldn't matter, but I just endured a 36 hour flight delay in Germany because our contracted plane was "broken". So I was eager to finish the last leg of the trip after four straight days of traveling. One of the gate agents realized I was on the standby list and used the loudspeaker to ask if anyone would be willing to take a later flight to help those on the standby list. The row of people noticed that I was one of the individuals on the standby list, so all of them stepped forward (about 6 people) to give up their seats for me. I'll never forget that act of kindness. Someday I hope to do the same for another soldier arriving home.

You were lucky, in 2005 when I came home for R&R I had my digital camera with me, all ready to go, I was going to take pictures of home as we came in to land, well, I ended up stuck in the aisle seat, I had to beg the flight attendant to find someone to switch seats with me, and this is coming from someone who wants zero recognition, but I knew this was going to be a once in a lifetime event so I asked, she had to beg people to switch seats with me, it took her 20 minutes to find someone willing, and it turned out that a mother and daughter had two seats with a third one being empty, all they had to do was move over one, it took the flight attendant 20 minutes to do that. I ended up getting my pictures, and they turned out perfect, along with the water cannons at DFW. I had also rented a car, a convertible mustang to be exact, I had left the terminal carrying my duffle bag and my assault pack headed to the rental car shuttles, I must have looked scary because when a little boy saw me and said, "look mommy, a Soldier" she yanked him away, I felt bad about that, but like I said, I wanted zero recognition, like don't talk to me, don't look at me, if something like that happened to me I probably would have walked away pretending I had to go somewhere. So I get to the rental car counter and ask for that mustang, well, they don't have it, they only had something like a convertible Sebring and I said I had rented a Mustang, and that I wanted a Mustang, "I'm sorry Sir, the only clean car we have is a Sebring" and I'm like, "Do you have any dirty Mustangs?" and she was like, "Yes" "OK, can you go ahead and clean it, I'll wait" and she was like, "Sir, I don't know how long that is going to take" I look down at my DCU's, take a small step back, kind of wave my hands over me and say, "It's OK, I've been waiting 9 months for this, I can wait" Someone else who had overheard us is the one who helped, she couldn't give a dam, but that's California for ya. I got to stay home and watch my dad die from cancer.

Oh my.. that salute made me cry. My dad was a career soldier and wore a ball cap that said "Korea-Vietnam Vet". My kids and I were at the mall with my parents one day, and I was ganging back with Dad because ge was slowing down. Two kids-young men-came rushing up holding out their hands and saying "Thank you." My dad said "You're welcome--what for?" One of them said "We're Marines, we know about Korea." They shook his hand again and ran off. My grizzled old, unsteady, cane-using dad stopped in his tracks and started crying. He said "No one's ever done that before."

The flight attendant came on the speaker to announce if there were any volunteers willing to give up a seat for a returning soldier trying to make it home for the birth of his first child. I was sitting towards the back, and it was truly a beautiful sight. About 10-15 people raised their hands. He had all of his duffle bags with him and the Marine 'high and tight' hair cut so we proceeded thru security. please elaborate how many proven cases there are in germany where civilians spat on soldiers? youre making shit up bruder! the german military has a shitty reputation because its not doing jack shit against proven cases of right facist people calling shots in the army. another reason is the seriously neglected maintenance of the equipment and that no one cares if ammunition gets "lost". take that tinfoil hat off!!! on another note, how is being a solider in the german army worth getting any kind of special treatment? most german soldiers do not put their life on the line and the ones that do, well so do police, life guards, firemen etc etc...if everyone gets special treatment, no one gets special treatment.

Most happily Brazil has not been at war since 1945 and our participation in peace missions has decreased, but right now we have people abroad doing their best in very small numbers and with the little support we can give them. A few months back, I was at a location hwere everyone questioned what the military did. I finally got through to them explaining how perception plays a big roll in understanding how actions are understood. Awaiting to board my flight, I was allowed to board early being a retired vet. As I walked up, I was greeted by no less than a dozen "thanks for your service". It never gets old. Feb 1983 - June 2013.

This is true it does happen, we were flying Denver to Los Angeles with Southwest Airlines and they had not only preboarding for servicemen but special announcements on the PA if they were flying. The world owe our gratitude to these GIs, without them, we were either be speaking German or Japanese, remember ww2, they only entered after a Military blunder by Japanese war planners to bomb Pearl harbor. Thank you for your service!

Our country treats our vets like crap. I say our because i'm not one of those people. I'm American and i Love & Support every one of my troops and vets. I just seem to be one of those guys people feel like they can open up to. I have heard some real horror stories from vets strangers and family. I have lost friends & family because i guess they thought it would be better to leave this world than to keep trying to live in it. We MUST treat our vets better than we are and have in the past.

If you heard the announcement saying military members in uniform. Problem with that is only the Army and Air force are allowed to wear uniforms on official travel. The Navy and Marines won't let their members travel in anything less than Service Dress and due to being a target they recommend civilian clothing. So that cuts out the rest of us on AA. United Airlines allows all military members holding an valid military ID without being in uniform priority boarding.

I might offend a lot of people. German soldiers were only doing their duty as well. They were soldiers. You might not agree with the decisions made by your Commanders, but you follow orders. That's your duty. We should never forget WHAT occurred, but we should be humane enough to forgive soldiers that were just doing their jobs. I say this as a veteran of the United States Air Force.
