very nice first try. I'm sure you have already read all the previous comments, but here I go. When making your mold try painting your line with a sharpie, the fiberglass will get it most times. when adding aditional layers of fiberglass first sand it all down, then take a paintbrish and give it all a nice coar of resin, then you apply the fiberglass and the rest of the ressin. For it to be as strong as possible, get some cotton rope and integrate it into the body of the box as if you were making ribbs If possible, use a wooden face for the box, it will give it a much nicer sound and will be both cheaper and more sturdy than fiberglass (unless you actually make that fiberglass face like 10mm thick. Let it cure before a volume test with water, you had leaks and poorly attatched spots that will hold moisture. finally, if you apply a nice even layer of polyfil you will get amazing sound signature out of the box, believe me, it will be worth it for a next proyect.
@69sound81

And yes, your wires should not be attatched like that at all, it is not the electrical inside your house, it is audio. look for a different solution on that, it is better to do it directly in the conection posts of the subwoofer.

Nice try at a first attempt for a custom box, but I do agree with all the others who’ve commented about the wire nuts, definitely a no go because of all the vibration from a sub and the vehicle movement in general. Also, as for trimming the bare wire coming out the back of the speaker terminals, a cleaner method would be to use wire ferrules and heat shrink.

I guess time will tell but I doubt they will come off especially since I secured them with the large staple. Thank you for your input and I am not trying to discredit what you are saying. I did check with a PHD in Electrical Engineering and he recommended this method since the 12 ga wires would not fit in the terminals when I need to put to wires in one terminal. Also, were you able to talk to Bob at American Bass?

@@TheImprovementChannel PhD in electrical engineering and installing car audio are 2 different things. Having a degree means nothing when he still gave you the wrong answer. Search around the internet and youll see it's not at all the right way to do this. No reputable shop, installer, or anybody that knows what hes doing would use those. Just because it works in other applications doesn't mean it'll work here. Yea it's ok for a stationary home but your car goes 70 MPH, hits potholes, takes turns, and with that sub banging they'll fall off. But ok, if you think it's ok go ahead. Its your equipment that will get damaged or vehicle that will catch on fire. I placed a order months ago and I've purchased from them a few times. I just know you can't purchase anything on the website and always talk to Bob, his wife, or the other guy that works there.That's why I made the comment about a coupon code.

A large staple, hum. You do understand that an enclosure will vibrate right? That metal staple will rub through the insulation on the speaker wire. I am pretty sure that positive and negative coming into contact with one another is a very bad thing. I think a plastic zip tie would have been a better choice. Second, you spent a great deal of time wetting out the mat, and protecting the vehicles interior with plastic. However you wanted to use wire nuts to make your connections, I do believe that some heat shrink and a some solder would have been a better choice. I have experience with these in an environment with a lot of vibration and yes they do come off. Have you ever seen a three phase 480 motor eat itself because the wire grounded out? It is not pretty. Worse case they will fall off, and will lose your signal. They do make these things called banana clips, that allow you to wire the sub the right way, either the clips or the solder and heat shrink would be a better choice. Lastly I think I would have drilled two holes, one for each wire, then used small bolts through the enclosure, with insulated termination to complete the connection between the box the amp and the sub. Also this would have been another opportunity eliminate the wire nuts as well, because you could have done your parallel wiring at this connection point with some insulated ring terminals. Third, you seemed to be guessing at your actual air space, that is critical to woofer performance. Fourth, low frequency equals a great deal of vibration as we all know, do you think that there may be some unwanted resonant frequencies do to the lack of density of your enclosure material. I think I would have included a little bit of sound deadening on the inside of the enclosure to limit unwanted resonance of the enclosure because it is not as dense as birch or MDF. I also would have deadened the wall behind the enclosure before I started the enclosure itself. I am not knocking what you did, it is all a learning experience, I think with some time and additional knowledge your projects will be finished better. However don’t take this as bad criticism it’s just something to think about.
@TheImprovementChannel
@TheImprovementChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had another person comment the same way about the staple. It is impossible to see in the video, it was very tight in there to get a good shot but the staple will mash the insulation and was driven deep enough to not allow movement/loosen over time in the contact area. This is a valid concern, what would you recommend that might work better?
@TheImprovementChannel
@TheImprovementChannel 5 жыл бұрын
Paul Fretz I have received a lot of feed back on this but I do believe the smooth sides of the staple will work out fine. Yes, a zip tie would have work out as well or better. Thank you for watching and your comment.

Some people just love to be critical. A 480 V 3 phase motor will not "eat itself" if a phase contacts ground, the short period of single phase oscillation will open the overloads if the over current device doesn't open it first. A sealed enclosure is not absolute on its required enclosure volume, unless you need the sensitivity and power handling to match the advertised values. Otherwise, an airspace acts as a suspension of air, with a smaller quantity resisting the drivers movement the most. Who cares?

I agree with some of the commentators... i do car audio for a living, and wire nuts just don't belong inside a car... vibration overtime will cause them come loose, especially inside an enclosure that has so much air pressure from the sub.... wire nuts are for home applications where there is no constant vibration/ movement... there's other things i saw from this build that would've simplified the job and would've aesthetically looked better but all in all i guess it'll do... the wire nut was the biggest issue...

@@TheImprovementChannel well, I commend you on doing a great job for your first time...I have a few pointers if you would like to take them. When you lay down your fiberglass mat or chop , the strength is in the mat itself you just want to soak that mat enough to saturate it.then layer it up. this will save you on wasting a lot of fiberglass resin..
@JimEdWright
@JimEdWright 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the tip! You are right I used a lot of resin the way I did it. How do you keep the mat together putting it in the resin then moving it to work piece?
@jorgepizarro3327
@jorgepizarro3327 5 жыл бұрын
@@JimEdWright well you don't actually put it in the resin. you can if you want to but because it's chopped mat that's going to be kind of difficult. What you do first is dab the resin on your work project and then add the strips of mat on top of it so that adheres to it. Remember if it's mat you don't brush it on you dab it on then take your pin roller to get the air bubbles out and if you want to make it stronger add more mat to it while it's still tacky then add more resin on top of that just enough to saturate/ change the color of the fiberglass Mat. I'm actually working on a custom enclosure for a 2003 F350 crew cab I'm putting 3-12 Rockville K9 behind the rear seat... needless to say this is going to be a custom enclosure because there's no way 3-12 will fit behind the seat without rubbing against the back I will be posting it on my page Then it's wham bam thank you ma'am 😂

I have a question regarding this step.Specifically, the fiberglass resin, fiberglass cloth, and the felt (you used) I wonder how well the bond between the top and the bottom part mend at this point? From my observation, the felt creates a barrier between the bottom half and the fiberglass section at the top; is that not the case? I watched another video where the creator did this similarly and the fiberglass didn’t create a bond all around. It basically left a gap almost all around the enclosure and the creator attributed to not applying enough fiberglass layers. Any advice helps thank you!
