We had heard of Beating the Retreat but never seen it or knew what it was. This was SO wonderful and we couldn't keep the smiles off our faces the entire time! I'm 18 years deep UK infantry and I'm not ashamed to say nobody does the drums better than the UK Marines, Those men handle a rifle just as well when needed and are always humble. Top blokes.

I am British but have lived abroad (In the Americas) for the last 23 years.... But my heart still swells with pride to see these events...the sheer dedication and professionalism of these people never ceases to amaze me. The Royal Marines are simply at another level. To march like this and co-ordinate a 90° turn with aplomb into a narrower street...(WITH TRAFFIC ISLANDS....for heavens sake!) and ......Not miss a beat whilst doing so..... Such skill.....it is truly on another level....marching ten abreast, whilst playing a musical instrument...... Just....just Brilliant. And they are the same in combat...... coordinated.... skillful.... Truly proud to be British....to the core.

I'm a former Royal Marine, and when you pass out of training, they have the Royal Marines Band there to march you on and off the parade ground and to perform while the Kings Squad performs a small drill display. Having them play sooo close is absolutely awesome and always sends a tingle down the spine. (And glad you girls like them) P.S. Did you know the Royal Marines Band played the introduction to Gerry Anderson's 1960's Thunderbirds show? Listen to that if you want a bit of a thrill :) ) Have a most excellent day now.

It's a shame so many young in our country are no longer proud to be British! We were brought up to be proud of our country , respect our royal family, and be respectful to all .

I have many vetrans in my family, but the one that gets me the most is my grandads dad. He was a first mate in the royal navy and was blown up by a German bomb in ww2. My great grandma who I'm named after was pregnant with my grandad at that time and already had two young boys. he was only 30 when he died and never got to see my grandad before he died, my heart brakes for my grandma for having two boys and being pregnant and loosing her husband and for my grandad for never even being held by his father. He has never complained or really even mentioned it, but I remember after doing our family tree showing him the ship his dad served on, some photos I've found and when I showed his his cremates he chocked up which kills me until this day. What our servicemen and women do and their families sacfrice should never be forgotten. I am incredibly proud of my great grandad for saving our country from tyranny.

Remembrance Day is actually on 11/11. We have remembrance Sunday where we have parades, it's the closest Sunday to the 11th.

The Royal marine Band is the best military band in the world. Bar none!.

My 2 grandfathers served in the Royal Marines in WW2 and members of both Paternal & Maternal family served with the Marines going back to at least the begining of the last Century. And nobody does it better than the Royal Marines.

I am 81 now, but have aching memories of marching behind these wonderful guys. I could have marched for ever! I still watch them whenever I can and, although I also love our other military bands, I think these musicians are the best in the world. Since you were upset that the video came to an end, there is a video on KZfaq which shows the whole ceremony of Beating the Retreat, which I am sure you would enjoy. Mind you, it is over and hour long! Just imagine performing that in the heat of the day as well. Awesome. Thank you for your love and respect.

As a former Royals Marines Commando" Bootneck" We are all very proud of our "Bandies" We are all part of The Corps of His Majesty's Royal Marines. Which is broken down into HM Bandservice Royal Marines, HM Corps of drums Royal Marines, and the fighting arm of the Corps, HM Royal Marines Commandos. The members of the bandservice do undertake military training as well as their musical training, after successfully completed this they can apply for Commando selection and win The coverted Green Beret. Actual Remembrance Day in the UK is the 11th of November, (the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month), but is traditionally celebrated on the nearest Sunday to that date, known as Remembrance Sunday. There are more than 200 musicians marching here so keeping them all synchronised is superb. The leopard print cover is basically padding to help take the weight of the bigger, heavier drums. The really early versions of these were actual Leopard skins but the current ones are man made and use the pattern because it is tradition.

The leopard skin is worn by the bass drummer to prevent the sheer weight of the drum causing damage to the uniform and to provide some protection by spreading the weight over a larger area. Used not just by the Royals but Army bands too.

My Dad was Royal Navy and he loved military band music. He was fond of the massed pipes and drums bands of Scotland, but for him the sheer military precision of the Royal Marines Band(s) was pre-eminent. He swore no one could march and play with greater precision, pomp, pride than The Royal Marine Band(s) {Son look how straight those lines are}

My dad was a British WW2 Commando, part of the Spearhead. My mum was a Teacher and drove an ambulance in occupied Belgium. They met during the liberation and married shortly after. Yes, I'm that old 🧓. I loved this video, even though we were getting further away as the video went on. Thankyou.

I am so proud of our military traditions. When I was a little kid my grandmother used to take me to The Royal Tournament at Earls Court (sadly Earls Court is no more and our Royal Tournament was dumped forever by the Labour Party 😡). Such a shame and a big mistake because it was probably one of the best recruitment tools. Within said Tournament would be something called The Field Gun Race done by the bravest and strongest lads in the Royal Navy as it was pretty dangerous to say the least but a huge source of pride and true brotherhood to be picked for the team. Quite a few recording on YT so just put "field gun race" in the search. It's absolutely mental to watch!

My nephew is an officer in The Royal Marine Commandos and when I saw him marching down The Mall (in front of Buckingham Palace) I thought I would burst with pride.

The proudest moment of my life was my passing out parade. Marching to a military band playing your regimental music. Made me feel a foot taller. ❤

Grandad was a Royal Marine Bandmaster and as he died before I was born, I never met him, but I've heard him play. HMV made a record of him playing as guest soloist on the clarinet in a classical piece with the orchestra of Copenhagen. He taught at the Portsmouth RM School of Music and as at that time Queen Victoria was in residence at Osborne House just across the water on the Isle of Wight, I am told that Her Majesty used to request his presence when being entertained musically by a small group of Royal Marine bandsmen. That gives you a good Idea of the standard that they had to achieve to become a member of the band, and they have to be competent on more than one instrument apparently. I'm proud of them all and appreciate very much your enthusiasm for them.

Hi ladies. In the UK Remembrance day is always held on the nearest Sunday to the eleventh (Remembrance Sunday) regardless of the date. Armistice day,"when the guns fell silent", is the 11th of November.

I had the privilege to have been a Royal Marine for 4 years, so I’ve marched behind the various bands of the Royal Marines Band Service a few times. I’ve been present with them playing many times. Later I used to work just behind St James’s Park (park in this video) and walked through the park daily to/from work. Over the years I’ve seen many military bands marching and playing there. Though the majority of time it would be the bands of the Foot Guards in their red tunics and bearskins, as their barracks are right by the park and shown at the very beginning of of the video. The leopard skin is usually worn by the tenor drummers (spinning the sticks) and the base drummers. I think originally it was a protective layer to stop the heavy drums damaging their uniforms, but now it’s mostly ceremonial.

Well done girls. Another brilliant video, and thanks for putting our Royal Marines on again. They are the best! Others have told you about the Remembrance Service being held on the closest Sunday to Armistice Day (11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month). That was when the 'guns fell silent' in WW1. Sadly, this years wi be the first without our dear Queen attending. ( believe she only missed two over her 70 years of Service and Duty). Her poppy wreath that she always laid, was always the first of the Ceremony. Another video that may interest you is the documentary made at the time, showing how the 'Unknown Warrior' was brought home from France, and buried in Westminster Abbey. It's a fascinating story of how the 'warrior' was chosen, transported across to the UK, and given the highest Ceremony, and being buried where so many Kings, Queens, and many important people from our history are buried. If you're interested, for those who don't know, whenever there's been televised Ceremonies etc held in Westminster Abbey, many that were attended by our late Queen, if you watch as she begins the walk from the door, down the aisle she had to walk round a plot, with a black marble stone, right in the middle of the floor surrounded by poppies. That is the actual tomb of the Unknown Warrior. It was placed in that spot so that anyone (including visitors) has to see and recognise it. For any visitors to London a visit Westminster Abbey is well worth it. There is so much of our history in there, including the tomb of William the Conqueror. Sorry, l've rambled on a bit.

I grew up in a town in Kent called Deal, at that time (70s) the home of the Royal Marines School of Music. We used to hear them rehearsing and to watch larger practices and occasional processions through the town. The School moved some time ago but the bands still return to play each year. The noise of the massed bands would carry across the streets, very powerful and evocative. The band members are basically all professional musicians who occasionally do soldiering.

@Natasha & Debbie I’m so glad you enjoyed this, I myself am a former Royal Marine Officer and served 15 years from 1998 to 2013, I can’t express the words to explain how much it means to me to see our fellow servicemen and women in the Royal Marines Band.

Still remember my passing out parade as Captain guard in the Royal Navy in 1979. The music made be proud, so did my mum and dad.

Remembrance day Sunday 13 November this year, Armistice Day as always 11 November at 1100 a 2 minute silence. They also lay a wreath at the the platform of one of the London stations, can't remember which one, where the unknown warrior arrived from France . The Band of His Majesty's Royal Marines, HM Band Plymouth are located at HMS Raleigh, the band practice rooms are opposite the sickbay, Music whilst you work, my personal favourite Sunset putting the King to bed.

Amazing how they turned that corner,split and came together again in perfect time. Love it!

Wonderful to come across this - especially on Remembrance Sunday. I did my bit with the cornet in the local silver band at the local war memorial today but obviously we weren't in the same league as these wonderful musicians. One of the highlights of my career in the Royal Navy was marching in front of a Royal Marines band from Horse Guards Parade through Central London in 1981 as part of the street lining for the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. And then we got to do it all again at the end of the ceremony as we marched back to Horse Guards. Thanks for sharing and love your comments!

Love your reactions and when you cover the Royal Marines I get an extra buzz. My grandfather was RM Bandmaster in WWII and I was in the RM cadet band in Portsmouth when I was a kid. Got to perform with the RM band in many occasions. Happy memories.

My dad was 42 commando regiment or her majesty’s Royal Marines his father was in the Royal Air Force. My other grand dad was a pilot in a Lancaster bomber . His father my great granddad was a high ranking officer in ww1. As for me I’m was in the cubs scouts and now I’m a test pilot for airfix… 😮

As an former naval nurse, member of the QUEEN ALEXANDER ROYAL NAVAL NURSING SERVICE. I was present at a few RM band performances. Full of pride and emotion. Sunset and evening hymn always brings tears . I will be at the Royal Albert Hall remembrance service Saturday 12th November where they always attend and preform . This evening is attended by His Majesty the King. My husband and I are so looking forward to it . Following morning we will take part in the march past at the cenotaph. He will be with his Falkand war veteran platoon. Thank you for showing so much respect for the British forces. 🇬🇧

I passed out as a Royal Marine in ‘91. Instead of the 2 weeks guard duty at CTCRM I went to London as a marker for the band on Horse Guards Parade. We had to march out into the middle of Horse Guards Parade, then split off to our positions around the perimeter carrying a standard before the bands arrived then not move a muscle while the band performed for the Queen. You really need to see them for real, videos do not do it justice. Still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when I see them perform.

The Band of the Royal Marines is arguably one of the finest military bands in the world. To witness them perform in person is truly an awe-inspiring experience .

The 11th of the 11th month Armistice was called at the 11th minute of that day when hostilities ceased in 1918 .Remembrance Sunday is the nearest Sunday to that date.

just to clarify, Remembrance Day is the 11th and there's usually minute or two silence observed. Remembrance Sunday is the closest Sunday to the 11th, when we have the main observance at the cenotaph in Whitehall with a service, national silence, march past.

Beating Retreat is a military ceremony dating to 17th-century England and was first used to recall nearby patrolling units to their castle.

Snap, my daughter is also a November 12th baby, she is immensely proud that her birthday is in the middle of the remeberance period and is looking forward to parading in her Marine Blues at the local (Portsmouth) remeberance service the Sunday. For clarification remeberance day is also 11th November here but the official services at the cenotaph and local memorials are always the first Sunday after the 11th in this case the 13th.

The Leopard skin is worn as a protective apron to prevent damage or wear to their uniforms from the drums regularly rubbing the same areas of their chest’s, incidentally it also stops their uniform buttons scratching the painted finish of the drums, some of which is older than the men playing them. The use of the leopard skins is not confined to the Royal Marines Bands, but is common among most British marching bands, including the Salvation Army, but due to the rarity of the skins a lot of bands use sheepskin as an alternative, my uncle was a drummer in the local pipe band which is not a military organisation, just a group of fan’s of Scottish pipe music.

There's nothing like marching behind a Royal Marine Band. I did a ship's recommissioning parade with them there; even in the pouring rain it was awesome. Our unit was in the next door building to the band so we would hear them practicing all the time. The RM Band Service provides music for the Royal Navy and was the first section of the RM to accept women on the same terms as the men.

The reason the drummers get the solo bits ... You try playing a trumpet marching at that speed

I love the percussion elements and the precision, but I have to hand even more respect to the brass element who not only need the marching and instrumental precision, but also need to have perfect breath control while marching and playing. Gobsmackingly good.

Rememberance Sunday is the Sundat closest to Nov 11th. Armistice day Nov 11 is still marked in the uk by a minutes silence. Councils usually mark it by setting off signal flares with an explosive firework to signal the start and end of the silence and some shops request the shoppers join them in a minutes silence to pay our respects to the fallen.
