I have never stayed in a Britannia Hotel but they have always had bad ratings. If you come to the UK and are looking for budget hotels, either Travelodge or Premier Inn are supposed to be good.

Birmingham and The Black Country is one large urban area, you touched on the Black Country when you looked at its living museum. As Debbie is so fond of chocolate Birmingham is the home of Cadburys, you can visit Cadbury World which is a couple of miles from the city centre. Birmingham was known as the city of a 1000 trades or the workshop of the world, since the industry has gone its done a pretty good job of reinventing itself and despite it not yet totally dumping its old reputation with some people many seem to be waking up to the fact that it is well worth a visit.

I'm a born & bred Brummie and very proud of it, I also worked on that Christmas market for 12 years, it was long hours stood in all kinds of weather, you're feet & hands froze, you got coughs & colds & bad backs and I loved every minute of it because of the atmosphere & the friends I made over the years, so from the day that the hut went up (battered finger nails time) until the day the hut came down was .....absolutely bloody brilliant... I wouldn't of changed anything (except the day I slid of the roof trying to fix the lights!!!) 🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅

I think it gets a bad rap. It's a hugely important cultural hub and historical part of the country. Manchester and Liverpool seem to get better PR than Birmingham, I imagine it's due to the accents and the fact it's in the industrial heart of the nation etc. If Birmingham was 50 miles more north or more south, it'd be way more appreciated I think.

As a proud Brummie it's good to see the city get some coverage. The second city of the UK, a foodie hub now with more Michelin star restaurants than anywhere else outside of London in the country; the home of Cadburys (visit Cadbury World!); the de facto home of metal music with Black Sabbath hailing from the city (and with neighbouring towns giving us Judas Priest and half of Led Zep), UB40, Duran Duran, Dexy's Midnight Runners, ELO, Godflesh...; one of the oldest, most prestigious and greatest football clubs, Aston Villa; the hit TV series Peaky Blinders... Brum has lots to be proud of. Any office worker will have memories of being stood in the cold holding a freezing pint glass outside the Council House dying for a piss thanks to the Christmas Market :D

Hi girls! I was in the RAF for 24 years in the 70s till the 90s and for nine of them I was stationed in Germany the first time on the German Dutch border and later further into Germany near Bielefeld at a town call Gutersloh. I tell you this because it meant that I experienced the German markets first hand in various German towns and villages. The first thing that you find which hits you in the nose at the markets is the smell. It’s obviously cold because of winter so the air is crisp and clear so what is the smell well it’s the German Gluhwein or to English speaking peoples Mulled Wine. It’s all encompassing and it smells wonderful it the smell of Christmas, sweet spices, hot wine and oranges and many more ingredients. The Germans heat the Gluhwein in the portable hot water heater us Brits know as Burco Boilers (trade name obviously). They hold about 4 to 5 gallons in a steel tank on a table with a tap or faucet at the front to dispense the drink. It doesn’t stop there, in the drinks booths they also sell shots of spirit to go in the Gluhwein whisky, brandy cherry brandy shelves of the dammed stuff to pep up your Christmas cheer. The sausages are not the type you put in a hot dog which in Germany are Bockwurst (usually sold in a jar) but are called Bratwurst these are fabulous and normally when I was there were cooked on a swinging griddle over hot wood embers basically a B B Q and normally with curry sauce on and sold in a sausage shaped cardboard dish and a wooden fork, this was then called a curry wurst. On the grill was also belly pork slices sold in a similar way as well as chips or fries (if you must called that barbarian French nomenclature) they also sell schnitzels with at least three types of sauces, sahne sauce (cream sauce), Zigeuner (gypsy) and Jäger (hunter) sauce. These are the fish and chips dishes in Germany sold in outlets called Snell Imbis or to us Brits known as Snellies. So to us forces blokes in Germany the Christmas markets were Gluhwein and curry wurst. Cheers girls

My Husband and I was stationed in Germany.. Husband 14 years and myself spent 9 years living there.. You have brought back such memories for me. We were stationed in Dortmund for 10 years. Best years of our lives. Christmas was such a special time. The Markets were magical. Also New Year's Eve when the whole neighbourhood came out onto the street to share a glass of wine and watch the fireworks go up. Where we lived, our little housing complex was in a German residential area. Our German neighbours included us in the tradition of sharing a glass of wine and shaking hands up and down the street wishing all Frohes Neues Jahr. We lived near the B1 autobahn and as midnight struck any big rigs out on the road used to sound their air horns. Oh happy days.

One wouldn't want to heat Mulled Wine in the Burco in our house, it spent 12 years boiling the nappies (diapers) for our 6 children, yes Terry Towelling nappies are expensive to buy but a lot cheaper (and greener) in the long run than disposable ones. The last child was using ones originally bought for the first. They then got used as floor cloths and rags when I was repairing/servicing the cars and boiled clean in the Burco still.

Plus been back on holidays all over the old East Germany since. Enjoyed your narrative mate - put me back in situ so to speak and in the mood to indulge. I can remember Frikadillen when they were horse meat - bloody fantastic. I ten to wax lyrical about Germnay so rather than risk becomng, "The German bore" I'll resist the urge. Koln did the best series of markets - not sure how many but I seem to remember there were at least four of them - a litre at each of them and not possible to count fingers after that. Zigeuner schnitzel................................

When it comes to drinks like the mulled wine it will never come in styrofoam cups anymore as they were banned thanks to their harmful nature if thrown away You used to find styrofoam everywhere, especially when going to fish and chip shops, but were largely phased out years ago even before the ban Also! Bamboo cutlery and containers made from Bamboo or its pulp are now the big thing, reusable and 100% compostable and Bamboo is the fastest growing tree on the planet, self propagating as well but needs containment as spreads like wildfire. It is also naturally antibacterial. That does slow down the composting at home but ok in an anaerobic digester so put in the compost collection bin.

Birmingham is a wonderful city, happy to reinvent itself. I’m there each spring to present at a conference and I’m always pleased to see it’s changing and is still not finished- never be finished, I think that’s the secret. There is a huge amount of civic space for events like this and it’s one of the best cities in the UK for having places you can just inhabit without having to buy anything. From public buildings, to the Library of Birmingham, to wandering up from the Bullring on a Victorian who’s who hunt.

Hi Natasha and Debbie, consider this: Elvis with a hat! Unbeatable! So, Birmingham is my hometown! They call me a Brummie (Well, my husband does because he is from Yorkshire) BTW Natasha, you pronounced it perfectly. Debbie, there is no sandwich meat involved in it! Watching this has made me miss home so much. My hubbie and I went to the Birmingham Christmas market the Christmas before we moved out to Canada. There were still Covid restrictions, but since it was outside, it didn't really affect the market. It was FREEZING! But we loved it anyway. (Hubbie never plans ahead and so I packed an extra jumper in my bag for him, so when he got cold, I produced it, and hence, no complaining about being cold!) Just loved the Christmassy atmosphere, Christmas songs, gifts to buy, loads of great grub and drink, and a good time had by all! Thanks again for a fantabubous video! Bev

I have found it hard as a newcomer here to connect and make friends in Canada (Victoria, BC) I find that many people just misunderstand my British sense of humour and think I am being disrespectful, which is nothing further than the truth. I love a German market but I have a soft spot for the Bath Christmas markets. They aren’t German but are in the little twinkly wooden huts and the stalls tend to be mainly lovely businesses selling nice gifts and foods. As it’s around the Abbey and Roman Baths it has a wonderful atmosphere with the old buildings. I find it’s a good place to actually find Christmas gifts (plus enjoy a mulled wine and roasted nuts) whereas German markets tend to be more about food/drink and Christmas decorations.

Loved your reaction to Birmingham , or Brummagem as it is referred to locally, my home town. The church that you admired is St Martins in the Bull Ring, it is the original parish church of Birmingham. A church has stood on this site since 1290, and most of this church dates from 1873. If ever you get to the UK you should try and check out Birmingham it has so much to offer from the historical buildings, it’s industrial heritage, to Cadbury World where you can see how the chocolate is made and try some of their range. Also don’t forget we are only a stone’s throw from Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town and the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare.

Birmingham has two cathedrals but what you saw, Debs, was St Martins church. You’re so right about the architecture and the rich history, and before the decline of industrial Britain, just about everything was manufactured in this region, even the anchor of the Titannic made in nearby Tipton. I live in the Black Country area where most towns are in the Doomsday Book (>1,000 years old) so young Brum is my local ‘big city’.

I've never been to Birmingham's Christmas market, but in the local town, there is a French market, & in my nearest city (Winchester), there are both French & German markets - all add a cosmopolitan feel to the Festive season, & having previously lived in France for three years, the build up during December is incredible - strangely, more traditional than how the British celebrate the Yuletide period nowadays. It’s estimated about 5million people will visit this German market over the ~7 weeks it’s open. Imagine if everyone that had a hot drink just stole one of those nice boot mugs that they serve it in. They’d never make money 😂It’s the same if you have a beer too, they charge like £4 for using the tankard, then you effectively either buy it or get your money back 👍🏼

All Christmas markets have their own mugs with the name of the market and year. You can just use them to drink the gluhwein and give the mug back. Or pay for it and take it home. We have quit few.

Hello Girls, I've spent this afternoon with my beautiful, darling daughter and her husband (canny lad as they live in the NE of England). We had some bratwurst but only 8 inches, pardon me vicar. it was really busy and the darker it got the busier it got, people coming out of work for a few beers. She's expecting her first child, a boy, and I am so pleased for the pair of them and myself and ex-wife who is now getting excited about. she's 20 weeks and the scans this week were great results! You should check Durham where my daughter lives. I lived there for 15 years when she was growing up. It's a beautiful place but can get very cold.

Hi Ladies, check out Lincoln Christmas market, its not about the size of the market (or the sausages) more about the setting. It is held in the castle and cathederal grounds. I think Natasha will really like the setting.

The building with the columns is called the Town Hall. It's base on the temple of Castor and Pollux in Rome and was completed in 1834. It's a concert hall that has hosted some famous names. The church towards the end is the ancient parish church of Birmingham (from when it was just a village). It's called St Martin's in the Bull Ring. The Bull Ring is the be markets area of Birmingham with open and conferred markets both retail and, until recently, wholesale. Seeking everything from clothes to veg. The Bull appeared in very large mechanical guise at the opening of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the summer. That is well worth a watch.

I'm off to our Christmas market tomorrow - it's held on the cathedral green here in Exeter. It's very similar to the Birmingham market (no rides though) It always has a very magical feel to it, especially when the cathedral choir sing carols outside.

That church you saw at the end by the ski bar is St Martins in the bull ring. The original parish church of Birmingham an Anglican victorian church build on the site of a previous 13th century church. Just in front of the ski bar is one of the first ever statues built of Lord Horatio Nelson the famous admiral and Victor of trafalgar. The Birmingham statue predates trafalgar Square by quite a bit

I love Christmas markets. My favourite is Vienna for the bread bowls with garlic soup. Manchester is second. The Vienna market has an outdoor ice rink that has the rink but also an ice path coming off the ring that winds around the park outside of the townhall.

The deposit is incase people steal the mug. If you don't steal it and hand it back you get your deposit back. So you pay 5 for the mulled wine, 5 deposit (which you then get back)
