It's a beautiful place, living in Cornwall I have been there several times. As for living there? Its a big no no. As you saw in the video Natasha and Debbie , everywhere you walk is on a very steep hill. No shops and deliveries from supermarkets are As they said are left at the top of the very steep hill, and trust me it's a hell of a walk. No cars no Internet no phone signal, no double glazing or central heating. All the propertie are listed buildings. If you want to live in the 1700,s that's the place to go.

Now that you've covered beautiful Clovelly, perhaps find a video on the twin villages of Lynton & Lynmouth, which are connected by a water-powered railway/elevator! You could follow that by Watersmeet (not a village but still in Devon), which I believe is still also privately owned. (Offer crumbs and robins come to your table as you sit drinking your tea.)

@@AncientBriton1948 Yes, you're right. It happened sometime in the early 50s if I recall. There's a small "museum" dedicated to the tragedy, incorporating a wonderfully fashioned and room-size scale model of the area -- at least it was still there in 2006, the last time I was there (from London.)

Clovelly is a stunning place to visit. On a clear day, at one point on the way down to the harbour you'd think you were looking out at the Mediterranean. Beautiful, just beautiful! Also, there's a waterfall that comes out on to the beach, not far from where the Little girl found her rock.

Hello there both. I live about 5 miles away from Clovelly in the nearby town of Bideford. We’re actually on the North Devon coast, not west Devon as stated on the video. You would both love it around here, towering cliffs, river estuaries and miles of sandy storm beaches popular with surfers. Move slightly inland and you have the rolling hills of Devon, narrow country lanes with high hedgerows, ancient woodland and green pastures with cattle and sheep.

Despite what the village advertises, there is no charge to walk into Clovelly. I live pretty close, and often go fishing from there. I have never, would never pay, the place is very well off: not all the inhabitants, but the village owners. I used to live on Lundy, and would often come back to the mainland through the harbour. The charge is for the bus to take you down. It is steep to walk, but seriously, if you can walk then do it. Its part of the charm. By the way, its much easier to run up the village street ( I did it last about 15 years ago): running down is to chance shattering your ankle!

If you ever make the trip there may I draw your attention to a little shed/ shop about half way down the main walk, there was a man who was selling mackerel baps, lovely fresh plump smoked fillets in a fresh bread roll, making my mouth water writing this. On more than one occasion I have had one on the way down to the pub and another on the way back. Bootiful, I also remember having to hold on to the wall on the way back up thinking it was the steep climb but it also have had something to do with the visit to the pub. Natasha and Debbie, Clovelly is a beautiful and wonderful well loved village, I’m glad you found it. If you are looking for unique and fascinating historic places you should look up the City of Chester my home town. Chester located in the North West next to the Welsh border and was once a very long time ago the Roman fortress of Deva, and is complete with Roman walls encircling the City, we also have a Roman Amphitheatre. The city inside the walls is built in the Tudor style with beautiful black and White half timbered buildings, in the City you will find something called The Rows a historic and fascinating system of two level walkways which are totally unique to Chester and will not be found anywhere else in the Uk, and must be seen, I think it is possible to see a video of just The Rows alone. There are many more things to be seen, a beautiful cathedral which was originally built in the 1500’s as a monestry. Of course like most places in England we have Castel remains, and we have a world famous Zoo. We also have the oldest horse racing course in the Uk. The thing to note about Chester is that it is a very small and compact City easily seen on foot . Also it has Royal connections King Charles was the Earl of Chester while he was Prince Charles and the title is now bestowed on Prince William.

I remember visiting this delightful village with its precipitously steep pathway all the way down to sea level - and up again! My main memory, after appreciating the breath-taking scenery, was when my ex-wife and I had toiled determinedly back up to the car park high above and saw a group of white-haired elderly ladies about to go down. One of them saw the very gentle slope of the pathway from the car park down to the top of the path down into the village and observed ‘Ooh, it’s quite steep, isn’t it?’ I was put in mind of Al Jolson but refrained from saying ‘You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!’

I loved Clovelly, they used to use sleighs to move things around because it's so steep

Hi, we live in North Devon and have often visited Clovelly and many other coastal villages . Check out Lundy Island, Lynton and Lynmouth and the Valley of Rocks with wonderful scenery and histories. Exmoor is the nearby national park which borders Devon and Somerset. Great show thanks. Jeff x

We were there while holidaying some 45 years ago, AND the donkeys were still used then, and for transporting the more elderly tourists who couldn't manage the steep passageways and lanes. I doubt I could do it today, the climb back is so very STEEP! A pretty little place and especially so out of season. Free to access the village in those days and just park the car at the top where you might.

They used to let people ride up and down the main street on donkeys , but in the late 60s the RSPCA managed to put a stop to this as it was not very good for the donkeys

Lovely ladies , went to Clovelly when I was 14 , I was a bit puffed at the top of the hill , now at 77 I would definitely need the Land rover to get back up . One correction I would make to the narrative, it's the West of England but Clovelly is located on the North coast of Devon . Great video .🇬🇧

Yes, Clovelly is a beautiful village to visit. I remember going there in the 1970s, and then you didn't have to pay to enter! I see a few people have already mentioned Lynton and Lynmouth, i think it's my favourite area in Devon. You really must watch a video on it. You won't be disappointed it's absolutely stunning. Look out for the wild goats in the valley of rocks or walk alongside the river and have a cream tea at the national trust cafe at Watersmeet. Take a ride in the water powered carriage that takes you up the cliff edge from Lynmouth to Lynton at the top or vice versa. 😊

I live near Clovelly! My Aunt and Uncle lived in what I think was Higher Clovelly, and as kids, my cousin and I would walk down and sneak in from the back to avoid paying. I think like many others who live here in North Devon, I often forget what’s right here on my doorstep, so I am going to pop over to Clovelly soon!

I live in south Devon so it’s only about and hour and a half drive across to west Devon. It’s an absolutely stunning place to visit. The cobbled hills are insane though. Very steep

When I stayed in the village I got talking in the pub one evening and asked what happens if you happen to die there. They said that a coffin is strapped to a sled which is lowered to the house where the deceased is, the body is then placed in the coffin which is lowered on the sled to the harbour (usually once the village has closed for the day so as not to cause distress) where its loaded into the hearse and driven to the funeral home.

There is another privately owned estate owned by the Fitzherbert family in Tissington in Derbyshire. All the homes there are rented from this family and people who stay there are expected to contribute to the village ie : Electricians, plumbers, decorators etc anyone who has something good to offer the village that is. I know these places are very hard to get set on waiting lists for example. It's a fantastic place to see i would love it there. Thank you for all the topics you show us ladies, I've loved them all,Wendy xxx

Hi girls, I have been to Clovelly a couple of times, but a few years ago. It hasn’t changed by the look of it. My husbands family live in Bude in Cornwall which is not that far away. My family live in the south of England, not that far from Windsor ( Windsor Castle)I Enjoy watching and listening. Take care 👍♥️

My son spent a couple of years here as the chef of the pub half way down the hill a few years ago. They gave him a room in the staff house next door. We went to visit him regularly , life was glorious in the sun with nothing special to do but moving in and out was not good and rubbish disposal was a real drag. Also all the hotel staff were responsible for getting the food , beer , spirits and clean laundry etc to the hotel, dragging everything on sledges up or down , he didn’t miss that at all when he moved on. He did however miss the village and still visits the friends he made there frequently. Pros and cons of living in one of the prettiest places to live.
