I have visited the Castle lots of times, the one that sticks in my memory is when we had a guide take us down to the dungeon, where the trap was set, to let the attacking army come into a underground tunnel leading to a large room where the trap was sprung. The wooden floor would tilt like a child's seesaw dropping the attackers to a pit.Hot oil and bows and arrows did the rest .France is only 21miles away. How far is the nearest country to you.

Hi! I work as a volunteer at Dover Castle, specifically inside the Great Tower (Keep). There is so much I could tell you about its history and architecture. One little snippet is that it has a well inside on the second floor that goes to a depth of about 290' (originally to 400'). The Officers Barracks you mentioned are closed to the public as all that remains intact are the exterior walls, the interior being either missing or in a very poor state of repair.

Kent is known as The Garden of England because it used to produce huge amounts of fruit and vegetables which were sent all over the UK to feed the population. Kent was also the main hop growing area of the UK which is used in the brewing of beer

The 'Garden of England' apt because fruit and veg are not grown on farms but Market Gardens (the produce was sent up to the London and other Wholesale Markets) just as hops are grown on Hop Gardens. The growers were always hoping that the market's not being over supplied with a particular produce to obtain a good price on that day. (Too many Strawberries at the start of Wimbledon or Sprouts at Christmas was bad for them money wise too few or poor quality from a grower for his reputation).

Good morning ladies. I grew up in Canterbury, 16 miles from Dover, so I'm fairly familiar with the castle, which was a popular day out or location for school day trips. The town of Dover sits in a valley between the hill the castle sits on and a slightly lower hill called the Western Heights. So the castle is built on the highest, most defensible position in the local area. Hence it's continuous occupation for roughly 1000 years. From the battlements (the uppy and downy bits, as I think Debbie named them so descriptively) there is a view right across the Straits of Dover to the French coast 21/22 miles away, which means that any would be invader is visible as soon as they leave Port. Well worth a visit on any future trip to Britain, if only to see the physical evidence of 1000 years of occupation. Oh, and yes you were correct. The keep of a castle is the tower-like building where the Lord, lady and their family would live.

Hey guys, you have been to Kent before when you had dinner with me. As I live on the Kent Coast, I’m between Dover castle and Leeds Castle which should by you next castle, it’s known as the prettiest Castle in the Uk mainly occupied by Queens not Kings and has some of the most amazing green gardens including a bird sanctuary and was used a hospital in the Second World War and it’s last ownership was an American Lady Tycoon.

Dover is perhaps the most important strategically. The castle I grew up close to, is Leeds Castle in Kent - often called the most beautiful castle in the country. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZ9dYKiL153Mgps.html It’s certainly impressive and, somewhat strangely, hosts a dog collar museum - some of which are truly terrifying from days of yore. I personally love Hever Castle, Anne Boleyn’s childhood home, also in Kent. Stunning English country gardens - just nowhere better to spend a summer day with a picnic. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a5OFeLuUmcDJonU.html A keep is a bit like a medieval panic room. It’s an extra fortified building to take refuge in if the castle is breached. Hope that helps!

I live actually next door to Dover Castle. There's so much history round here we have no idea what to do with it. Really. Roadworks in the 90s revealed a Roman fort, and nobody knew what to do, so they just buried it again. And some of the tunnels they mention are actually a sequence of huge underground forts. Again, nobody knows what to do, so it's all sealed off. You can get in them, but you're not supposed to. And there's the Painted Roman house. And so on...

Keep - central defensive structure of a castle. The White Tower of the Tower of London is a good example. Staircases in British castles go up to the right. Since swords were always taught to be used in the right hand, that allows a clear swing for anyone defending down the stairs. Anyone tring to climb the stairs would have the central support blocking a clean sword swing.

Hi ladies. I was born in Dover and used to live where we had a view of the castle. I spend a lot of my childhood visiting the castle and tunnels as my family were paid members of English Heritage and we could visit the castle free of charge. I watch your video a couple of times and was disappointed that the video you watch didn't show you a distant view of Dover castle from different angles (It's even more impressive). For my 40th birthday I was lucky enough to go up in a helicopter and fly around Dover castle, it was amazing!!! I moved from Dover to Deal (the next town along the coast) where we have 3 castles along a 2 mile stretch of coast. Walmer castle (the Queen mother visited quite regular) Deal castle (check out the design) and Sandown castle (which is now ruins). Kent is a wonderful place to live, beautiful coastline, amazing countryside and lots of "typical" English villages with thatched roof cottages and oast houses.

Much of the original Warwick Castle has been subsumed into the Victorian conversion of the inner buildings, which are very touristy now, but the original wall and battlements are interesting to climb up to, as long as you can deal with tight small stairwells. It's worth a visit, but not as a 'classic' castle

I went to school in Dover and could see the castle every day up on the hill above the town. (King Stephen died in my headmasters garden - no surprise there!) Dover Castle is virtually unique in being an active military establishment from before Roman times until the 1970's. The wartime tunnels and their activities weren't actually fully de-classified until the 1980's. It's location overlooking the Channel (you can see France from the battlements on a clear day) makes it the most strategicly important fortress in the country. And now, after Brexit, we can use it to repel visitors from Europe all over again!!!!

The decorations on top of the castle walls are crenellations. The castle is haunted, there was a young drummer boy who was decapitated by robbers, his drum is sometimes heard. There are the ghosts of WWll soldiers in the tunnels, a woman in a red dress, and a woman can be heard being thrown from the castle walls. The castle is also called "The Key to England". It costs £21.30 per adult to enter.

Im no expert but the way I've seen it - The "keep" is what most people think the "castle" is - it's like the heart of the castle, the castle includes everything within the outer walls, the keep is hardest part of the castle to reach, heavily fortified and usually the highest point within the castle.

To answer your question on renovations. In UK any building built before 1948 can listed as either grade 1 and grade 2. Grade one buildings are building that either have exceptional historical architecture or national significance, grade two buildings are those with significant architectural interest warranting an effort to preserve it. These listings are applied to a wide range of buildings including private homes, barns, there is even a public toilet. Owners of listed building are subject to restrictions on what they can do to the property whilst being required to maintain the property. Even minor changes inside and out are subject to permission from the local authority and any repairs have to carried out using historical methods and materials, so owning a listed building can be expensive.

Officers' New Barracks - Dover Castle The Officers’ New Barracks at Dover Castle are the castle’s most stunning example of Victorian architecture. They were constructed between 1856 and 1858 to designs by the architect Anthony Salvin and George Arnold, a clerk in the Royal Engineers. Arnold had responsibility for the plan and general arrangement of the building whilst Salvin designed its external appearance together with the decoration and detailing of its main public rooms. He also designed all the fireplaces and window shutters throughout the building. The building originally contained accommodation for 45 Officers housed in two wings either side of the centrally located Mess. This general accommodation consisted of two-room suites (sitting room & bedroom) opening out onto communal corridors. The Commanding Officer and the two Field Officers had the luxury of superior accommodation in self-contained apartments with larger rooms and their own private toilet facilities. The Mess and it’s ante-room were the most finely finished rooms in the building with large stone fireplaces, moulded panelled walls and traceried mantels. The basement rooms provided accommodation for the Officers’ servants, the Commanding Officer and Field Officers’ personal kitchens, larders and wine cellar. Following the Army’s departure from the Castle in 1958 the building has remained vacant apart from a period in the 1980’s when the west wing was used by the Immigration Appeals Service. There was a scheme in the 1970’s to convert the eastern half to a Visitors’ Centre and some radical changes were made to the interior. However this scheme was eventually abandoned leaving the interior stripped of most of its original features. The exterior of the building remains largely unspoilt with the exception of a section of Block B where a loading bay was installed as part of the 1970’s scheme.

We spent a week in Kent once, as it's a corner we'd never visited. We took in Leeds Castle, which is there, and Dover Castle. Didn't get to see all of the later, as it's so extensive, but we saw the Romans lighthouse, and did the Keep fairly thoroughly. The keep is the main part of any castle, it's the most heavily defended, and where the lord hangs out. The square bits along the wall tops, often called battlements, are technically Crenallations. Note for Debbie there. Other castles worth visiting Windsor. Warwick. Leeds. Edinburgh. Cardiff. Caernarfon. Caerphilly. Pendennis. Tower of London. There are hundreds of them scattered around. Some little more than a few walls, others grand houses, that were never defensible, but built as status symbols. Dover didn't have a really rough history, and was used by the military, because of its location, until quite recently, so it's in quite a good state of preservation. I love a castle too, and have been to a lot of them. They are all unique.

Love Dover and Hever the most, I've visited both a number of times. They caught some footage on cctv, of some movement outside the infront of gates and the security guard got so spooked, he went out to check it out. The footage is on yt, or hopefully it still is

You have to see Warwick castle If you go there you are close to an area you like, the cotswolds, make a trip to the area for a few days as you are near Shakespeare country you could visit Stratford upon Avon, If you visit Warwick please learn about the background of the Earl of Warwick called The Kingmaker as he was very powerfull and changed a lot In our history, FABULOUS on agood day try to get a day when jousting takes place, there is a fabulous siege engine on sight and when I went there was a Madame Tussards exhibition on site, this transported you back, in time! I LOVE CASTLES AND HAVE BEEN TO MANY but this was special as I love its medieval history background, I love my country so many places to see and I so enjoy seeing the pleasure you both get from exploring it. By the way have you looked at a Madame Tussards exhibition based in London, started by a Lady of the same name, a refugee from the time of the French Revolution take a look ITS A WAXWORKS, BRILLIANT, maybe put it on your show please! Thanks

The castle Keep is the strongest and most fortified part of a castle, it was the final refuge should the castle walls be breached. Fundamentally a castle within a castle. Great video again ladies.!!

I lived in Dover for over 30 years and used to work at Dover Castle when they had medieval banquets The company I worked for were Lions Catering who ran specialty functions hosted by the RF and that is how I got to be employed at Buckingham Palace, I did two years working at the Buckingham Palace garden parties, (my husband was a footman there) I stood a few feet from prince Charles and Diana on more than one occasion and many more the Queen, I fed the corgi’s cake too😃 it was wonderful to see everyone in their finery and see so many royals chatting to the guests So many wonderful memories

The “keep” usually refers to a core or central tower of the castle.

the keep is basically the square bit that was in the frame when he was talking about it...sort of like the square tower at the tower of London.

Just a note that all spiral staircases in castles and forts go to the right. The reason being that those defending the castle (from above) would have a freer sword movement than those attacking from below who would have restricted right arm swinging action

I have been to Dover Castle with my best friend who is a member of English Heritage and also the National Trust. Because we in the UK have so many Castles and I have been to a few of them, I have absolutely no interest in them, but the only thing when I was at Dover Castle that interested me was Hell's Corner which are the tunnels in one part in the Castle's grounds. It was built and used by British troops in the Napoleonic War's then by British troops in the 1st World War, also in the second World War by the Royal Navy and the British Army. The incredible breathtaking view at the end of the tour when you go into Admiral Ramsey's Office and there is a glass double door which leads to a large ledge with iron railings. When you stand there looking out to see you can see France and then you realise that you are actually in the White Cliffs of Dover. Admiral Ramsey is a Hero to us who are into military history, as he was the man who organised the miracle of Dunkirk where over 300,000 British and French soldiers and Airmen were rescued and bought back to Blighty ( England). Why am I into Military History is because I had members of my family who served in the British Army and the RAF during WW2 and I have a cousin who recently retired from the Royal Navy Reserves as a Commander he captained a British Warship that was a Frigate. On my American side of the family......my great grandparents on my late mum's side of the family were American from Pennsylvania, where I had a relative who fought in the American Civil War and survived it and became well known in American History his name was Lieutenant General George Armstrong Custer of the 7th Calvary. His mother is my direct descendent. I am also descendent to a French Knight who was a close friend to William the Conqueror who fought in Hastings in 1066 and who became King of England. My descendent was sent to Ireland to rule the country in the King's name. My other hobby is looking up both sides of my family's history, I have a cousin here in England who lives in the county of Hampshire who is doing the same thing and she lets me know if she finds anything on her mum's side as her mum and my late dad were brother and sister from the Republic of Ireland. I myself come from the county of Hertfordshire in England and I live just 24 minutes by train and 35 minute's by car from London, I originally came from London where we have the most famous castle built by King William the Conqueror, the Tower of London. Tower Bridge in London is named not because it has two Towers but the Bridge is built beside the Tower of London. Natasha and Debbie take care of yourselves and thanks for another great reaction, lots of love from one of your British subscribers. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Dover castle is not just a single structure, there are annexes that are larger than many other castles, in fact a huge part of the clifftop is pretty much a military camp with their own dry moats and tunnels. Many parts of castles/forts have French names as they are a French idea that came over with William the bastard in 1066

Debbie was right the Keep, usually in the centre of the castle was the main residence and also the most protected part of the castle, where the lords etc would be ensconced as last resort protected by their soldiers .

It is a great area. Lots of interesting historical events. In recent history, the channel tunnel was built between uk and France. You drive your car onto a train, 30 mins later you drive off the train in Calais, France. It’s 22 miles long I think. (Don’t quote me) it links with high speed trains, so as a foot passenger you can leave London early morning and have lunch in Paris. Brilliant 😊

Great piece about Dover Castle. You ask about others so you might like to take a look at Knaresborough - not a spectacular castle by any means but it has a lovely view over the river, railway viaduct and part of the town. Built about AD 1100 it was slighted by the Parliamentarians at the end of the Civil War. Knaresborough itself is an interesting town having England's oldest chemist's shop and many old-style small shops as opposed to supermarkets and chain stores. Mother Shipton's cave is there and many objects have been hung there to 'petrify' in the limestone-rich waters. Mother Shipton was a 16th/17th century witch and prophetess. Worth a look anyway.

Kenilworth Castle Warwickshire. As with most castles they where made obsolete by gunpowder, but this was restored and had a special garden made for the visit of Queen Elizabeth the first. It has since been restored again.
