The first two stanzas of the national anthem is an African hymn, “Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika” (God Bless Africa), sung across the diaspora in Africa. It is sung in 3 indigenous African languages. During the struggle, that part of the anthem was sung as a stand-alone chorus and was eventually banned because of its association to anti-apartheid movement.

The national anthem said in the African languages. Is basically a prayer. God Bless Africa💔🇿🇦🌍

We, in South Africa, have learned about you for decades, felt your pain even more because we were going through our own stuff in our country. Watched Roots and shook our heads thinking just how long this has been going on. The number of pupils killed in the 1976 Soweto students uprising is estimated as 700 fatalities

This happened on the 16th of June 1976, it hasn't even been 50 years yet. People tell us to forget about the past and embrace our place in this unjust society.

The sad part is that those that fought the real fight are now forgotten and the politically connected are thriving and looting from the state.

Mbuyisa Makhubu was/is my highschool principal' brother , the news would come to school on Youth day the 16th of June and interview him. The most painful thing he (principal) said to us is that they may never get to know what happened to their brother or even give him a dignified funeral if he has passed on.

Omg, am Ugandan but listening to such mischief upon Africa's youngster literally made me tear thinking about my younger siblings in such situations. It's not only the Whites with such ruthless acts, but also Fellow Black leaders in countries like Uganda. Whereby in the last general elections, over 60people died in police shootings in a period of over 1 month in Kampala due to protesting against oppression and unfairness demonstrated by certain government agencies in brutally silencing any opposition leaders... To the extent that in Central Uganda which is the most developed region of the country government still lost tremendously with over 95% votes towards the opposition and opposition members of Parliament.

I visited Soweto in December of 2021 and listening to this story and being there broke my heart. Till today I still can’t delete the photos I took. The boy carrying Hector Pieterson in the photo is said to have just disappeared into thin air. There’s so many rumors as to where he is but nobody knows.

I'm looking at this but can't stop tears. I was 7 years and living in Soweto when this happened.

You need to hear the original Anthem (song) as composed by the honourable Mr Enoch Sontonga. It happens to be the national anthem of Zambia . The sad things is that ours was mixed up for reconciliation purposes and regarded as an interim national anthem, to date we're using it unfortunately

The date of June 16 was chosen by the Students to actually represent Black Power (as it was initially even called "Black Power Day"), to coincide with the date Kwame Ture coined/popularized the term "Black Power" on 16 June 1966. One of the main kids who organized these protests, Teboho Tsietsi Mashinini, would actually even live with Kwame Ture in Guinea while in exile. 2. Hastings Ndlovu (15/16) & Hector Peterson (13. child in the picture) were some of the youngest children (amongst many) to be killed by the SAP (South African Police). This wasn't the only incident children were massacred by the Police (see also Trojan Massacre in Cape Town in 1985). 3. The Student Uprisings were not just limited to Soweto, but spread across South Africa from June 1976 to early 1977. 4. The South African government actually blamed some older Political Leaders (of the PAC) for "inciting these children to protest, and fermenting revolution" (they didn't), and held a secret trial called the Bethal 18 Trial/Bethal Treason Trial (the ONLY one ever). They would kill 4/18, and attempt to kill 1 during the trial. The remaining 13 were found guilty and the "leader" (Zephania Mothopeng) was sentenced to 15 Years for something he wasn't even involved in, and solely because of the then Black Consciousness Movement.

This makes me cry even now it's very emotional for us even today

It is painful to watch this, but it is important that we never forget where we come from. In 1976, I was a year younger than Hector Peterson. On 16 June 1976, we heard gunshots for the first time. We ran in all directions. We didn't know where we were going. We were young and scared. Today, in 2024, the ANC wants to govern with a white led political party. What a betrayal? How can they forget so soon? The wounds for us are still too raw.

"God Bless Africa", is an African song every nation sings in their language. South Africa modified the song and made parts of it its national Anthem. "Nkosi sikelela iAfrica." Zulu/Xhosa version.

The police started shooting after the students started throwing rocks at them. It doesn't justify what happened but the whole story needs to be told if the truth is to be understood.

I just spent 20 minutes trying to write a comment only to delete it again. Either the words would be too graphic for a comments section or I’d end up in tears for the next 3 weeks.
