American Couple/Sports Fans React: England's BEST Football Chants! FIRST TIME REACTION EVER!! We've finally gotten into watching some sports material that aren't common in everyday America. Check out our video on our first time watching Rugby here: • American Couple/Sports... 👈🏻
We are HUGE Basketball, American Football & Baseball fans but admittingly have never heard the British Football Chants we've been asked to react to. We purposely didn't choose to react to the chant video with the cruelest language as it's circulated everywhere and not suitable for our channel. This one was still shocking in it's own right and yet fun too! We hope you enjoy. Don't miss our special announcement at the beginning & end! Please hit the Like button and consider subscribing. It's funny how with football it's a roll reversal with u guys, Americans are known for being loud, and the British quiet and reserved, until sporting events where we become crazy and you guys become respectful and quiet 😁

What makes it interesting is the perception of both countries. British are all reserved and don't sing. While Americans are loud and will sing at every opportunity.

So true Sara. I never can get my head around sitting with rival fans. And most of our chants would get you kicked out in the US. And when Americans try to chant, well it's just cringe. "I believe we will win..." Try that at Elland Road and I believe you'll wake up in hospital.

One of my greatest moments was starting a chant at Wembley when my team was at a playoff final. I had a good idea, had enough beer to be confident enough to sing it loudly, and everyone around me joined in. 10 seconds later, 60,000 people have joined in and it echoed around the stadium. Good Times.

"Bird" is a modern version of the old English word "burd" (first coined in the 13th century) meaning "maiden". Over the years its spelling changed from burd to bird because it sounded like the more familiar word, bird, so it ended up being spelled like it too. It's possible that "burd" could also be the result of a 12th-century semantic shift from the Old English word brȳd, meaning bride. "Fit" just means attractive.

I dont think its just those two things,, theres a geniune dislike of the argies because of their personalities and they are quite arrogant and they love the dark arts (a footballing term meaning they use underhanded tactics and time wasting). I think theres more of an edge to an Argentina game than even a Germany game, footballing wise that is. Portugal are another, although the Dutch have a bigger dislike of them,, Holland Portugal games always have a lot of needle,, 2006 world cup was a great example 😂.

Chants become common over time, yes. But bear in mind chants are developed 1) with generally simple words and 2) to commonly known tunes. Seriously, you can pick up most of our chants before you finish hearing it for the first time. That's one of the beauties of them - they sound great (especially if insulting enough) but can be picked up by everyone quickly.

Some chants are specifically aimed at a single team and last for years, some chants just get a persons name changed to keep the current, some are spontanious and start with a small group and spread - dont forget the lyrics are pretty simplistic and usually based on a well known tune.

the art of chant making does have its main well known ditties everyone is at least vaguely aware of, they are generaly short and easily remembered and copied so picking up a crowd chant isnt hard even when they are spontaniously formed. though ill admit im more of a fan of the more brash versions of chanting. most clubs do have a mainstay chant which are often formed from or around popular songs e.g. liverpools walk alone, west hams i'm forever blowing bubbles etc. and they can have there own historical chants i.e. fields of anfield road, singing of past glories, and the differnce it can make to players on the pitch is quite undeniable when the stadium sings as one. i recomend looking in to these if you want to avoid the more "ahem" adult ones, maybe start with kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdR2gtSrmZewk6s.html

The feeling of when going down Northumberland Street in Newcastle when some start chanting, usually most domestic clubs/squads have their stadiums outside of the places where they are. It can either be a group or one person and then it catches on and some like in NUFC's case the Blaydon Races, was written by Geordie Ridley in the think 1860s, was about a fictional accident at a Victorian cart race in Blaydon Gateshead and for some reason the NUFC supporters started chanting it in the ground. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n6yDl9Bm3pzIoKc.html mostly translated version kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i7mcgdKfr7u8n58.html and for the 150th anniversary kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o8WFl5mo0L-ycac.html NUFC's crest is practically identical to the city's Coat of Arms, with the two seahorses with NUFC's the black and white shield, but the city's coat of arms having the shield in 3 sections with the 3 castles, what one giving Newcastle it's name, the old castle burnt down, was called Pons Aelius Latin for Hadrians Bridge.

I love them (even when they are a bit risque!!) I lived in the city of Norwich & our local rivals were the town of Ipswich - one of the chants that used to be used against them was "We've got a Cathedral!" .... childish, but funny at the time! Also, if someone had fainted & had to be taken out of the crowd by the Red Cross, the crowd would often make the ambulance siren sounds (nee-naw nee-naw) as the poor volunteers arrived! (not when someone was obviously seriously unwell) .... it's a real cultural experience to go to British football matches!!) 😂

We usually play both countries national anthems during international tournaments before a game, but not normal clubs. Also football chants are usually just catchy tunes that most people know already, but with words adapted (usually on the fly) for that particular game or reserved for that particular team we're currently playing ((usually hated arch rivals). It's just someone with a big foghorn of a voice and a lot of beer in them that shouts out, and 20 people round him will pick it up and chant, which then expands to 100s more.

Basically, you take any popular melody that every one knows, make something up that's funny and then keep singing it out, if it's good others will join in and it just spreads, if it's a particularly good one it'll stay all night, typically the melodies chosen are from classic songs closely related to football from the past. none of the things shown in this video are what you would call too dramatic or offensive, there's a lot worse than that, and certain teams in europe have fan groups known as 'ultras' who take mob violence and football chants to a totally different level, and while it's nowhere near as bad as it used to be here in the UK (for the most part), in certain countries in europe they have some pretty bad reputations, romania is a well known one, there's a few in greece, and several in germany/italy, it's partly due to these old fan groups that used to cause a lot of damage and physical harm to rival fans and such that we have segregated fan areas, and why you will never see a stadium full to capacity with rival fans next to home fans, there's always a set amount of space between fans where no seats are allowed to be sold when it comes to international games, for domestic league games there's a few stadiums where they have set seats for away fans (generally newer stadiums), older stadiums have 'away ends' that are policed by marshals and the police itself on match days to keep fans apart.

Best one I ever heard was when Wigan played Forest Green Rovers (a team with a Vegan policy!). One FGR player was tackled and stayed down on the pitch. The crowd chanted “ That Vegan bastard, he’s eating our grass”. As a supporter of Charlton Athletic, I don’t often have much to celebrate, but at one game I was at, Charlton were playing the top team in the division, and no other team had scored more than one goal against them so far that season. The score got to 5-1 against Charlton, who then scored again, prompting a chant of “Easy, Easy, we want three”!! The best ones are not only funny but spontaneous and unique.

6:20 Birds = girls. 8:09 Normally our chants are songs or hymns that someone’s changed the lyrics too to fit the situation, a majority of people will know the tune and then pick up the changed words. 11:10 I think we do in big games but I don’t think so in smaller games (sorry if I’m wrong) 13:50 this is definitely a tame version because as watchers get progressively more dr#nk they lose there filter and go wild 15:03 there have been lots of fights (but I am unsure if thing have gotten so bad someone’s d!ed) normally you do have to be careful because depending where you are you could get attacked or harmed by the opposite team 15:19 they have to keep them separated because some people are so invested in there team that they would fight anyone who supported a different team and it might become serious quickly, it also help with chants 19:47 actually I think that the chants shown where either in the game or before it eg. ‘I’m England till I die’ and ‘we’re on the p!$$ and we’re having a laugh’ 20:27 yes lots of chants and dr!nking going on when your walking there and waiting outside and in car parks

The spontaneity of chants can vary. A few are very much of the moment. Others are rather generic and simply spread around different clubs, and the national team. The ‘Don’t take me home’ chant was originally sung by Newcastle fans at away games. ‘Vardy’s on fire’ was originally sung by Wigan fans about Will Grigg. ‘Cheer up Gordon Strachan’ is one that’s been adapted loads. Again originally Newcastle fans, in the mid 90s directing it at Peter Reid then manager of Newcastle’s local rivals Sunderland

@@pauljshields123 Aye that’s right. I know this is about English football chants, but a fun one we Scots did was when we played the mighty Italy some years ago. One myth that was turned to reality was that we deep fry anything - even Mars Bars. This urban myth was actually made real, and now the deep fried Mars Bar is hugely popular. Anyway! We were playing them in Italy and we keep singing to them, "Deep fry your pizzas! We're gonna deep fry your pizzas". And now, deep fried pizzas is a thing, and you get it by ordering a "piiza crunch" in Scottish chip shops.😉

That video was the world cup chants, the first one was pre-game btw as were most of the other street ones. The actual best football chants are the normal games, one or two of them are a little close to the bone covering certain taboo subjects, if you know the backstories to them they can be amusing but to the average person not so much. A fair few of the chants are pre rehearsed by a group of fans but there are some that are totally on the fly. As for the separation of the fans, that is/was a real problem because of the “Firms”(groups of hardcore fans), they used to contact each other before a game to set up a massive brawl which usually involved “Tooling Up”(arming themselves with weapons) one of the worst weapons was the 50pence piece which has 7 edges, 6 of them were filed down as sharp as blades then you would hold it between your thumb and middle finger with your index finger on the flat edge and you would throw it at someone like skipping a stone on a lake. Sorry if this was too long I got carried away LoL if you really want to know what the football fans used to be like, watch Green Street, Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins) was in it.

It honestly is done on the fly, one person sings it and then there is a very fast chain reaction, like a vocal mexican wave, and everyone in that half of the stadium is singing. There are also standard chants when fans are in their own stadium. I There is always an element of truth in the chants as well. Unfortunately, there has been violence at football grounds especially between two local rival sides but it is a lot rarer now than it used to be. The fans are split as a result. In Rugby everyone sits wherever so it is mixed. I was at a game once and it was 48 - 0 with my team winning with 10 minutes to go. Two guys in front of me were totally surrounded by fans from my team and one shouted down to the players 'come on guys we could still win this!' The rest of us were in fits and bought them both a drink and a mars bar. That's what it's like at a rugby match, you feel totally safe.

To answer a couple of your questions and extra info, we have chants in each team that the fans know like liverpool manchester chelsea ect (teams in england including the national team) And yes some chants will happen on the fly when something happens in the game or if something has happened on the news people will chant (this is where the chants usually get spicy) but everyone who hears it joins in and then it spreads. and because england play all over europe a lot of our clips are either in england or wherever the team is playing in europe. For a european game every football player will go and play for their home team (where they were born) to showcase the best players each place has (england, brazil, madrid, germany, italy, egypt ect) which is where the national pride comes from. also yes we have party's in the street like the first clip after a win or before an international game and a lot of the time its outside the stadium just wherever we are. And i did a couple of translations for any americans watching, birds = women, fit = attractive, on the piss = out drinking. hope it helps much love

I loved watching this and seeing your reactions. Made me think back to the days when I used to go to football matches. I'm originally from East London and now live in Perth, Western Australia so don't really get the chance to go any more. There are some talented people out there who do indeed make up songs on the spot and get everyone (fellow supporters) to sing in unison, usually having a dig at one of the opposing teams players or manager. Coming from East London usually means that if your into soccer you support either West Ham, Tottenham or Arsenal as they are the nearest teams geographically. Most of my family were a mix of West Ham (Hammers), Tottenham Hotspurs (Spurs) or Arsenal (The Gunners) fans. One of my favourite chants of all time which goes to the tune of 'My Old Man Said Follow The Van' (a true cockney sing-song) has the following words... My old man said be an Arsenal fan I said 'F*ck off, bollox you're a c*nt This can be sung by Spurs supporters to Arsenal fans OR it can be sung to Spurs supporters by Arsenal fans and they just say Tottenham instead of Arsenal. I like the friendly rivalry and humour when it is all done in the name of fun, not the hooliganism. I've been to some London derby games where things have gotten violent and it is not pretty. Keep up the great work ladies

Great video! I’m British and can confirm, these are very tame. Most of the chants you heard are common across the country, but you can vary the words slightly (according to the situation) that’s how everyone can sing along and catch on to the new chant. With regards to “we’re not going home” that’s not as in we’re not going home to bed, it’s referencing a tournament/ cup in a knockout stage. As in, we’re still in the competition, and we’re not going home (yet!) These were all quite small groups of people chanting. Usually there’s thousands of people all in unison. We are also not allowed to sit next to each other due to fights and in the past unfortunately… murders 😢 People pre drink in the streets and in pubs before the game starts. The partying will continue into the night. In World Cup games, it’s not uncommon to see people partying in the streets for 2-3 days after the game.

tion! Just thought I’d add a bit more info. You mentioned how these seem like away games. Some notable countries seen in this video were away games/tournaments in Germany (multiple cities), Ireland, Scotland, France and South Africa (?). The video of the national anthem was during the 2016 European Championship in France and varying reports estimated between 250,000 and 500,000 England fans went over for the tournament. Also, the German Bombers chant was sung in Germany during the 2006 World Cup hosted there👍🏼

The term "birds" for young ladies is not as derogatory as some may think. It's the same word as "bride", and in the Middle Ages no one would have confused it with a word for a feathered animal. Different dialects of English transposed the r and i, creating two words out of one as printing came to standardise spelling.
