@@inotoni6148 That was not fair... Malik did everything he had to. Not sure it's politics, British were also saying "Europe does not like us", and what happens when they send a good song, performed the way it should by a positive, endearing person? 2d place. You can feel the lack of investment from the german delegation. A staging like that, from Germany one of the biggest European country? You can do better. And maybe, stop trying to find a radiophonic song, it's not always working at ESC... Hope German broadcaster got the wake up call and that Germany will do a UK next year. Come on, rise & shine, you can.

Right, praising a knock-off Katy Perry competing for Ireland while sneering at the Serbian entry which is a satire on Balkan healthcare and the modern obsession with appearance over actual innner health. What, precisely, was remotely Irish about that mess? Nothing. The Serbian entry was very Balkan indeed, and they dismissed it because it wasn't accessible at first glance.

It's really interesting to see the differences between your guys' American tastes and Europe's, speaking as an Australian who really enjoys Eurovision. For me personally, songs like Malta which you guys seem to like, I would consider boring and uninteresting. Whereas ones you don't seem to get the appeal of, such as Serbia, are some of my favourites thanks to their originality. Politics definitely plays a part in the results but I think people really overestimate by how much. Cool video, although definitely differ from you guys in terms of favourites.

Don't take it (or yourself) too seriously, have fun with it, enjoy the ride and you might be surprised. Yet, complaining about the voting results is an integral part of it. You guys forgot something very important: Our tradition to lose the ESC at every opportunity. It was founded in the 1950s and we only have 2 victories decades apart (with some sort of a generational split. My parents always think of Nicole, who won in the 80s, meanwhile my brother and I think of Lena, who won in 2010). Meanwhile we regularly end up at the bottom end, without big surprises. honestly, the quirkier/crazier the better!! A perfect Eurovision song should be true to the country's culture, preferrably have some ethnic elements or just have a great message. Basically, it needs to be memorable. The staging and performance are also VERY important if you want to do well, I'd argue even more important than the song. I think you're onto something with the different music tastes of Europe and the US, while we do listen to a lot of the same music you can also trust that any European will go crazy to Dragosta Din Tei or Dancing Lasha Tumbai!

When you watch Eurovision next year (as you inevitably WILL), make sure you start by looking at the Wikipedia page for the 2023 contest, which will show when each country has released their song. You must then spend weeks obsessively listening to all of them at every available opportunity, until you know them all inside out. And, of course, make sure to watch the semi-finals AND the final. So many casual viewers will only tune in for the Saturday night final, and will see the songs for the very first time. They will therefore be very judgmental based off of looks alone in many cases. But those of us who have been digesting all 40 songs since the beginning of the year know exactly what's popular and what isn't, and can usually predict the rough finishing order.

The whole show was pretty poor. The drone shots were pointless (and I agree, the post card should represent either the countries or the bands, not being some sort of advertising for the host country), the acts pretty lackluster (honestly, what is the point of changing your costume if the audience isn't allowed to see the feat? I was so confused first if they just cut the performance together), and the hosts boring, drawing out their jokes waaay too much. I think the only part I enjoyed was the explanation of Italian gestures, that one was fun, though I still don't know what exactly the one gesture which was apparently rude is supposed to be or supposed to mean, and I doubt many non-italians understood that one either (outside of it apparently beings something rude). I mean, I didn't like the show Israel did either, but at least it didn't feel lackluster.

"What we don't really understand is how the voting works" Don't worry. most eurpeans don't know either. The Voting system of ESC is a deep and trecherous swamp with moving stepstones, half of which are hidden under the surface. The very easy version right now is to say that Audience votes count 50% and Judges votes count 50%. But that still leaves out the deeply comlicated history of countrys interwoven Sytem of voting for each other, but not officially of course that is a rabbit hole so deep and steeped in european history that unraveling it could probably be a masters dissertation for a history major.

Oh, Eurovision ❤️ I come from Estonia and it's like I grew up a Eurovision-Fan. It's something everyone makes fun of but at the same time everyone loves. People get together with friends and make a fun evening out of it. About the clips in between performances - they don't necessarily have to be about the hosting country. Throughout the years there have been short fairytale clips, clips showcasing the performing band/artist etc. Until some years ago Eurovision hosts had to moderate in English and French, that was dropped and if someone speaks French now, it's quite nostalgic. Also the deal with singing in your mother tongue- that used to be a criteria, but not anymore. And for decades the concert/contest was just one evening a year, but as more and more countries joined, they stretched it out. Australia had been a big fan for almost forever and snuck their way in a couple of years ago. If you follow it from year to year, you'll pick up on which countries usually send what or who voted for who - neighbors act often brotherly and help eachother out. Plus all the foreigners voting for their home country from abroad (i.e. me, voting for Estonia while living in Germany 😂). And yes, the taste issue. Eurovision has its own style, that's all I will say 🤭😂 anyway, I'm super excited about tonight, we have four kids and two of them are allowed to watch a bit of the final for the first time as it's always so unbelievably late. Just have fun with it and enjoy the evening 🇪🇪❤️

Yah I am still pissed about how they were allegedly "unsuitable for radio airplay", as if all of our songs from the last years were all played on the radio. For example, I never heard "Miss Kiss Kiss Bang" or however it was called 🤷‍♀️ and Electric Callboy already has a big fan base. I hope they apply again next year, it can't get any worse anyway.

@@JuLiane, I remind them as Eskimo Callboy, came to this back then in 2011 because a classmate of mine had chosen to play a song of them in French class (everyone of us chose a song and talked about it. That was the task)... and I liked it pretty much. Callejon is another Metalcore band I like pretty much, they're doing crossovers with Rap/Hip-Hop (they worked with K.I.Z., Ice-T, Antifuchs, Pilz). "Suitable for radio airplay"... uhm, there's a reason why there are more than 2,500 web radios in Germany... it's not the number of web radios why "classic radio stations" do have struggles to maintain their audience... or that it seems easy to run a web radio. There are many who don't exist for long, others pop up and shut down sooner or later... so much being said for "it's easy". The latter point can't be affirmed, at least not by me... I am part of such a web radio, it exists for almost 12 years now. I joined in 2018, since a year I'm part of the SL (the tier just underneath the boss). I only listen to "classic radio stations" when I ride along in a car with family members, friends and teammates... as this kind of radio bores me for some years now. Too much mainstream stuff and other nonsense, except for the news. Even back then, when my mum yet had her own car, we already preferred to put some of our music onto an USB stick and play that via car radio. That's the main reason why web radios are booming that way: There's more musical diversity. Okay, there are many with that mainstream stuff, too - The ones who struggle to exist or even to find team members. At the radio I am, we do play all genres and even exotical stuff. The only thing that's forbidden is to play music which is on the "Black List" and as well to play certain stuff before 10 p.m. (Protection of minors)... but it offers a lot of diversity about what can be heard on the stream. Something that "classic radio stations" don't offer (anymore).

4:30 Actually Nicki was known globally. She is one of the biggest European KZfaqrs. 4:35 Same with Mika - globally known singer. Others are mostly known to Italy and Eurovision fans though. 17:00 Nah this year Russian war is the main politics topic. Israel and Malta just had bad songs. Ireland had good performance, but song was dreadful and they also usually struggle with block voting as well (so actual politics, but those are usual politics, where people vote for friends and countries like Ireland and San Marino, just don't have many of them - their only chance is in sending extremely good songs - especially as in Irish case, they have won the most and actually they won 4 time in a span of 5 years or something like that, they are at disadvantage of being overexposed - something that actually is starting to happen with Sweden as well, where televotes turn away from them, so others can have fun as well). 17:00 Well looking by your reaction - let me explain you Serbia - it's pretty much fan fave this year. Due to memes, but also because the song itself has multiple layers and resonates extremely well with different types of people.

16:50 with the guy from Israel there were also some events where he didn’t seem to be nice. The semi-finals are most of the times watched by the ESC fans who also keep up with events like the turquoise carpet (the official beginning), where he f.e. stole the girl from Croatia at an interview the microphone, so he could be in the spotlight himself instead of her. By this, his popularity sunk in the group of people, who would vote for him. Many podcasts compared him to WRS from Romania, and when you like both and know that one tends to be not nice, you vote and root for the nicer one. (At least in my experience.) My favorites this year are France and Czechia, btw. Also I love macarons (French) and Wienerbrød (danish) :D

We watch ESC as a family every year. We usually listen to the songs on the internet when they come out, so we're familiar with them for the semifinals. It's fun. Many songs aren't really good, but we love commenting on the whole performance. I looooooved how Australia showed up on the turquoise carpet and had a laugh with Iceland's reference to Scooby Doo. I don't have a favourite dish, there are several that I like. My favourite songs this year are Ukraine (not for political reasons, but because I think it's a really good song) and Italy. I also like Moldova, because they have such a positive vibe, but after about the half I get bored because it doesn't surprise me at all. The Swiss performance had great vocals and I appreciated also Greece.

Hi, When I was a child, the ESC was a boring "Schlager"-Competition. Then there was a slight change, when the queer community hyped the event. And then, when I grew up, there where two things that totally changed my experience. 1. Stefan Raab mixed up the dusty old competition by sending in totally nuts songs and making fun of the ESC, before sending a normal song with Lena, who won. Before that change, I couldn't have thought of a band like Lordi entering - let alone winning - the ESC. 2. Alcohol and cheese. There is a comedy clip, about a group of friends, drinking the national shot and eating the national cheese to every song. And we we accepted the challenge. :-) Well, we changed to "cheese and a really small sip of alcohol for every song" very quickly, otherwise, the evening would have ended in hospital. ;-) So nowadays, I enjoy the ESC, having a nice evening with family and friends.

The Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) is the most expensive music show in the world. The EBU (European Broadcasting Union) always has the most modern Video effects, the most modern state of the art Stage with all the technical inventions of the last year regarding stage techniques. Beside the music it is a selling point for artists which are planning a tour to see what techniques are new and could be used in the upcoming tour. There are 5 nations -the big 5- wich are always in the final, because they pay more than 80 percent of the show. These are Germany, France, Spain, UK, Italy.

Honestly, some of the politics is just the song having Meme Quality™ and being fun, standing out from amongst the pack. Bajillion ballads is boring to watch for three hours on the final night, especially because there aren't that many good ballads anyway. We need something to spice it up, and that's were fun, wacky and unique entries come in. If the music and lyrics are catchy and good, then even better. (Moldova is my favorite fun song this year, although most seem to prefer the unhinged Norwegian space wolves.) And Serbia's song is quite meme. How can you not love a song where the artist wonders about the secret of Meghan Markle's shiny hair while critiquing her country's healthcare system, mass media, and beauty standards? (Personally I don't understand how Belgium got through.) My favorite Finnish food is spinach pancakes xD

The reason why the ESC (Eurovision is just the name of the network, not the show) starts so late is that they had to find a compromise between the different TV schedules in Europe. In Germany, the traditional evening news start at 8pm and then prime time shows or movies always start directly after, 8:15 on all channels. In southern Europe it is warmer during the day, so people tend to take longer breaks and finish work later, thus having dinner later and starting evening entertainment later. There, prime time will begin at 9pm or even later.

The thing with Eurovision voting is that, in the finals, there is a 50-50 split between the points awarded by the public and those by a panel of national jury members (usually industry professionals). Juries tend to really like heartfelt, emotional ballads. The public tend to like upbeat pop acts, the quirky and weird, and things that really stand out. This often leads to some discrepancy where a song might be loved by one and hated by the other

Great Video, as always. As for Eurovision. Israel is a member of the EBU as it is in the European Broadcasting Area, as fined by the International Telecommunication Union (a UN agency), that also includes, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Algeria and Morocco. (apart from Iraq ans Syria all are EBU members). Australia however is not an EBU member but an associate member (the US is also has associate members like ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, American Public Media and WFMT) and participated in 2015 as a one time option for the 60's Eurovision as is a huge Eurovision fan base there and they've been broadcasting is live since 1984. It was so successful that this one time was extended and, for now, it is approved until 2023. If they win the contest will not be hosted in Australia. As for the Israeli song, as an Israeli (living in Spain) I can tell you that although you liked it most Israelis did not and so did most Europeans (in the booking agencies odds it was 33). The Israeli representative was chosen for 6 years in an American Idol style show but this year it was changed to X-Factor Israel. The song is chosen by professionals, not by the public and it seems that since the 2019 Eurovision in Tel Aviv the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation is trying to avoid another win after spending 35 million Euros on the contest. As for politics. People always say that you should keep politics out of sports/art and it is theoretically preferable but we are not living in a bubble and sometimes you cannot completely separate the two. That said, most of what Eurovision fans call politics is more of cultural differences and studies show that, although there are, to a degree, "voting blocks" it has negligible influence on the results. As for voting, when you vote for each song a system of 0-10 is great. The contest system is to arrange all songs from best to worst and the first best 10 songs receive points. when the first 8 receive points from 1-8 and the 2 best songs 10 and 12. During the show 50% of the votes comes from the jurors, there are 5 of them and they are professionals from the music industry (singer, DJ, composer, lyricist or producer). the other 50% is from televoting. You vote for your favorite song, all resoles are gathers and the first top songs receive 1-8, 10 and 12 points but the result shown during the competition is the sum of all points for each song from all countries so if a song was awarded 6 points by 10 countries, 3 by 4, 10 by 3 and 12 by 3 it will be awarded 138 point.

I think last year's ESC (2021) was unusual in terms of how many high quality songs were in the running. Ukraine, Iceland, Lithuania, France, Switzerland, Finland...they all could have *easily* won any other year where the competition wasn't as strong as it was in 2021. And the WC comes back to the US in 2026. It all depends on where you are, but we had watch parties at the office during the day. That was even though the US wasn't participating. Americans also bought the most tickets for the 2022 WC in Qatar (after the hosts). A lot of Americans are supporters of their ancestral homes, so it's a bit diffused.

The Iceland entry for the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest was Hatari - "Hatrið mun sigra". It was performed entirely in Icelandic, the song title translates to "Hatred will prevail" and concerns globalisation, capitalism, greed, and hatred. They caused a lot of controversy, as at the end of their performance in the final, the dropped Palestinian banners - the contest was being held in Israel. They came in 10th place. Hatari have continued with a fair amount of success worldwide in their dark techno/industrial genre. It's great to see a band show up every few years and shake up the norm in the competition while being actual viable bands and generating an international fan following.

The voting system is actually pretty simple but for whatever reason a lot of people don’t understand it (including german broadcaster NDR): The results are made up of 50% televotes and 50% national jurys. The jurys each select their top 10 performances. The best one receives 12 points, the second-best 10, then 8, 7, 6 and so on. The 11th best performance doesn’t receive any points whatsoever. Televotes are determined in a similar fashion: The entry with most calls receives 12 points, second-most 10, then 8, 7, 6 and so on. Jury and Televote points are then added up and whichever country received the most points wins. This process is the same for both the semi-finals and the grand final. The only difference is in the way the results are announced. In order to keep things fair they only announce which 10 countries received the highest number of points and thus made it to the final. Whereas in the grand final they spread things out as much as possible to keep it suspenseful. This system is designed to present a clear winner. It does not, however, accurately represent the musical taste of europe. Basically, you have to send something that is desperate to win. If you shoot for top 20 that means you’re working towards zero points. Last year for example the UK received zero points and thus lost, despite actually scoring top 15 across the board. Personally, I‘m in favor of the voting system as it is because it encourages risky entrys and bold decisions. If your country’s broadcaster knows what he’s doing that is.

The only time a microstate won the competition was Monaco in 1971. As you predict in this video, they couldn't host the contest the next year because they simply didn't have a venue large enough for it. The UK volunteered to host instead, which they have done 3 more times when a country couldn't host (usually for financial reasons), so 4 times total. The Netherlands also took over once, so it has happened 5 times that the winning country did not host the next year. Next year might make it 6, if Ukraine passes hosting to another country because of the war.

Mika (the French speaking host) was huge during the early 2010's, he made more than a couple of absolute bops that still hit strong to this day (Grace Kelly, Stardust, Love Today, Happy Ending and We Are Golden, to say a few). @@PassportTwo It's a song contest, not artist contest.🙂 Please🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 would you do an total blind reaction video without any research to the german Metal band Electric Callboy "Hypa Hypa"? (If you don't know them already.) If the German organization would do what the ESC-Fans like/want they would comped this year. Because of Ukraine it would be unsure that Germany would win, but we would have a lot of fun.😂

Laura Pausini is super famous in Spain and the tall guy is Mika, he made a collab with Ariana Grande way back in 2009, the song is called "Popular Song", that's from where I know him from anyways, the other one I had no idea pre-show and pre-google.

Hard to say - so many options. Pizza (some is much better than others), calzones, steak fajitas, Yorkshire pudding, funnel cake, brownies and New York-style cheesecake.

•Voting system: points go 1 to 8 and then 10 & 12, idk why.. that’s just how it works. There’s a Jury Show where every country has a jury there and they give points, that is 50% of the points.. then all at home vote by thelephone, text or app, and that’s like going in a percentage and countries will give points and then that’s 50% too… • the hosts are always from the host country (or hired in(?)) Mika, one of this years hosts has an American passport and had some big hits in (western?) Europe • for Tiny countries… they might host it themself if they can afford. They would probably work the postcards out. For counties who can’t afford hosting Eurovision (or can’t do it for any other reason) the EBU will ask for other countries to hosts, which.. most of the big 5 havent host since like loooong and they have the money… so they can say “we want to help host”. (This will also happen next year, the multiple counties offered to help if Ukrain isn’t able to host in May 2023)

Laura Pausini is an ICON, she is also known outside of Europe. Mika is known as well, he had some hits throughout Europe (not sure if he is known outside of Europe). The other male host I guess is known just in Italy, at least I didnt hear of him so far. I personally love Albania's song. My country's song was meh, she should've sang it fully in Croatian. Also we were 11th for the second time in a row. xD

I'm a big Eurovision fan and while there are some goofy entries out there to lighten up the show, I think the show has a great musical quality especially in terms of variety and originality. I do admit that many of the pop songs in it are quite bland (Malta and Ireland for example) which might be the reason for many to think it lacks quality. Other notes I would like to make from my perspective: -The politics (neighbour voting) do play a part, you can see it in specific cases (Greece Cyprus) quite well. However, it's not that relevant as you think and most portray it, it doesn't affect the overall result really. -There's no country that actively tries to lose, it's something that started as a saying but has developed into being portrayed as the truth. If you know more about the contest it is quite apparent how some countries just have a bad performance record due to lack of interest (Germany) or just lack of funding to submit a good song, usually a problem for smaller countries (San Marino, North Macedonia)

Yeah, I think the whole wanting to lose came in the 90' when Ireland won 3 times in a row and then again two years later. The boradcasters were practically broke and they were desparate to stop winning. But then it became this whole thing, that countries are trying to lose on purpose, but some small countries like Slovenia already have a smaller chance to win than a country like Sweden or Ukraine, so we don't need to send a bad entry to make sure we don't win.

When you assume that it's politics and not the shared culture, values, language, religion, history, tradition and music that makes Greece and Cyprus vote for each other...

Well... to answer your question about the hosts... Alessandro Catalan is probably only known in Italy (as a TV presenter - X Factor). But Laura Pausini is a very established singer... I think she has around 14 studio albums out, she sings in Italian & Spanish (and has one album in English), won San Remo Festival, Grammy (Best latin pop album 2006) and several Latin Grammy awards... and Golden Globe for best original song in 2021! Mika has an international singing career (he's Lebanese-British and fluently speaks english, french, spanish and italian, as well as a little bit of lebanese arabic) with 5 studio albums and several awards... He also works as TV presenter or jury member in shows like X Factor (Italy) & The Voice (France). Voting is half Televoting & National Jury votes. Malta was one of the most meh songs in competition LOL. Sad for Emma who a very good vocalist. Israel was a good performer but the song was not good. Achille Lauro for San Marino started his carrer in underground post Punk and urban circles. He's not for everyone but he did put on the show. :-)
