Watch the new trailer for what critics are calling “the Best Picture of the Year!” #AmericanFiction is now playing in select theaters. Additional cities opening this Friday. Get tickets at AmericanFictionMovie.com
AMERICAN FICTION is Cord Jefferson's hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

I hate when black people learn a new term like "black trauma" they tend to not only overuse it they mislabel it. "Black trauma" is this year's "projecting" 2020 "gaslighting" 2021, "Karen" 2022, etc. It's so irritating. The Color Purple was not a black trauma film it was a film about redemption, triumph and forgiveness. This generation is simply not smart enough to be able to digest complex media. Everything has to be surface level for this generation to understand. They spend more time on smart devices being dumb than they do reading actual books or learning and applying logic and critical understanding. You can praise this film without having to put down another that simply was too multifaceted for your brain to decipher. I am black by the way so miss me with the racism rant you were about to begin projecting and gaslighting your black trauma my way.

It's ALL the same. It's the American representation of African Descended Americans. Those truly in power (control of finances and resources) have selected how Blacks will be represented and the young, ignorant, and simply greedy accommodate them by churning out negative images. @@Thor-Orion My pleasure. There is rarely a direct translation between those media. I have a more complete experience with the movie after having read the source material. Concrete example, Jaws was a great book AND a great film. There were differences between the two and to the filmmakers credit, they understood NOT to include the affair between Hooper and the sheriff's wife because it was a summer ACTION film aimed at the entire family and the affair would have dragged down the movie. As I look back on it, it dragged down the book. Hahaha! But I was 14 when I read it so I just wanted shark, shark, shark! Might read different at age 62.

@@GinaGreenlee no, I totally agree! I felt the same way about The Prestige, except I always recommend people watch the movie first on that one very specific case because of how the novel is written to add a bit of intentional obfuscation to the story since it has several underlying mysteries running throughout the novel. The movie simplifies it and acts as an accessible entry point into the excellent world that the author (Christopher Priest) built up to utilize fairly accurately as an historical setting within his fiction piece.

What a masterpiece. Droll humor scattered throughout - probably Jeffrey Wright's best performance. My favorite part was the 5-panel book judge (3 white authors, 2 black) voting on the "masterpiece" book for the award, all 3 white authors pontificating about the rawness of the black experience, while the two black authors voted against it. And the ditzy white female author ends the scene saying "it's so nice that we finally get to hear the voice of black people" 🤣🤣🤣

"A Masterpiece" "Absolutely Brilliant" is a slap in the face to Spike Lee. They know this has been done before, trying to say, "well it isnt as over the top" as Bamboozled, but it wasnt for everyone to laugh and enjoy. He had a message with tough love. They really dug Bamboozled, but had to do this, and cant come up with anything original, so they can eff with it. Ill wait til it comes on Netflix, Hulu
