An American going back to Italy? Follow Marissa, as she takes a boat and travels back to her family's original small town in Southern Italy... Amalfi!
When Marissa first visited Italy, she was an American tourist who was visiting the country she knew her family once came from. She didn't know anything about her family's past. Years later, she decided to learn more about her Italian family that generations ago left Italy and immigrated to the United States.
In today's video we are in Amalfi, the beautiful cliff side town on the stunning Amalfi Coast. In 1890, when Marissa's great-grandfather was born, Amalfi was a simple fishing village. Today, the Amalfi Coast receives more than 5 million visitors a year and is one of the most sought after destinations in the world. While most people know Amalfi for the private boat rides, 5 star hotels, and lemon gelato, Marissa is here for other reasons: to see if she has roots in Amalfi.
Join Marissa as she tries to find clues about her great-grandfather's life in Amalfi - she will make some amazing discoveries along the way and give advice as to how you can do your own genealogical research! Watch to learn how!
Curious how Davide & Marissa learned other languages?

OMG did this take me back to when I was exploring my own Italian background. My paternal grandfather' parents were in the USA for two years before they returned to Vallerotonda and my grandfather spent his schooling in Italy returning to the his USA hometown and never visiting his parents, aunts and uncles or even brother. Boy was it a journey, I took my entire senior year in high school (2009) to find the hometown that my grandfather was from. My grandfather died not speaking a word of Italian to his children nor telling them which of the 20 regions he came from. It was very powerful experience, because my grandfather died 9 years before I was born and by my high school graduation it was the 10th anniversary of my own father's passing. When I first visited in 2014, even though the language was strange I felt like I had come home. Since then I have visited Vallerotonda 2 other times.

The same is happening today in Albania. Lots of people are leaving a beautifull seaside mediterranean country, with a wonderful climate to go to north europe where the sky is always gray!! I guess there are two kind of people, spiritualists and materialists. Spiritualists can never leave such a beautiful place, or any kind of place which is their home, materialists can do that. I guess your great grand father was a materialist!!

I'm so glad you got to visit the land of your ancestor. I visited the Amalfi Coast in 2019, and it was quite exciting. I recently returned from Girona, Spain, visiting for the first time the area where one of my ggggrandfathers was from. He ended up in the island of Puerto Rico. I was thrilled to visit his original city of Girona.

a somewhat unusual name for an Italian, is it possible that his name was Piero?
@hesamniaz6980
@hesamniaz6980 2 ай бұрын
@@lntersteIIa5555ah yes great observation! Thank you! It makes me think also that “PERE” is similar to “PÈRE” in French as the Val d’Aosta is so close to the boarder and that would be a familiar way to refer to him.. We know he must be born near the 1890.. since he went to fight the WWI. Also since his brother was priest I wonder which of the MANY Churches has a list of the names! 😊Grazie

@emanueleroncolato9616 look at poverty in the UK and USA!!!! Don't need to go to Italy. At least there they are eating excellent Mediterranean fresh food and not the junk shit that Americans and English generally eat 😂😂😂. Italian women still know how to cook. Not sure how long that will last though as every new generation is starting to become lazier and heat up microwave crap.

Probably because of overpopulation and poverty - and therefore lack of employment opportunities. My parents had to leave Italy (from the Veneto region) after the Second World War because of poverty - but Italy recovered during the "Dolce Vita" era. And often wonder why we left!

Hi Marissa and Davide. I found this very interesting. I was able to locate the long-form birth records for my 2 Italian grandparents and 4 Italian great-grandparents, all of whom were born in the same small town in Puglia. A lot of the street names that were listed on the birth records I found don't currently appear on Google Maps, so I was wondering what you would recommend I do to try to find those streets whose names have likely changed? Did the historical record library help you at all with old street names, or do you just have to walk around and ask elderly residents who might remember? I am currently pursuing Italian citizenship by blood and hope to visit my ancestors' hometown in the near future. I'm really glad that you were able to learn so much during your visit to Amalfi. Grazie mille.

Hi Lee, I am glad you found this video interesting! In order to find the streets of your grandparents/great-grandparents, I'd recommend contacting the Archivio Storico or the library of the town. They are the ones who told me where the old street would have been. But I was also lucky because I talked to a woman who lives on that street and she confirmed that it was in fact Via Campo. So I'd say both the Archivio Storico/library and talking to residents is the way to go!

My great grandparents left because of the Mussalini who raped and tortured countless woman and children those who fought against his regime. They ended up in the United States. Went to WW2 and other wars. I would love to visit one of my home countries that my grandmother and grandfather came from, Lithuania. They were born back in the late 1800's early 1900's. It was because of communism and rotten governments who ran countries in the ground.
