Nothing more painful than watching Americans learning rugby......rather than listen to all information properly Americans would talk over the commentary because they seem to enjoy the sound of their own voices better. Then wonder why they don't understand it.

Also, with the lateral pass question, the refs judge the pass by watching the players hand and finger direction. So, it can drift forward legally, but quite often those type of passes, get called forward anyway.

When someone punts the ball another player from behind the kicker (or the kicker himself) will sprint forward as fast as possible putting everyone onside that the sprinter passes. This is important because forwards are usually getting up off of the floor and won't be able to get themselves onside in time to have any impact unless a runner does it for them. A kick tends to come from behind where the forwards are.

Ummmm, that wasn't England playing Scotland. That was France. Culturally you don't actually root against the other team. You root for your team. The stadium isn't separated between sides.. Everyone is mixed together. It's not just a foot under the ball... It's anything under the ball... Hand arm, ass, head, anything. I'll explain something not covered in this video. It's called ADVANTAGE. In our American sports the refs have no problem stopping play to enforce the rules. That's not how rugby works. If a ref sees an infraction, he will call out that he has seen the infraction, If blue was the offender, "Advantage White". Then the ref will allow play to continue to see what happens. If the blue team gets the ball or shuts down white's play then the whistle blows. However, if white gains enough of an advantage (territory/possession) then the ref will say "Advantage over." Now, when the white team hears the ref say that they have the advantage, they know that if they screw up they will get a 'do over' so they are likely to employ a high risk/reward play. If you didn't know about advantage and you see something you think is illegal and the whistle doesn't blow you might think is was legal. Conversely something legal happens and the whistle blows you might think that what just happened was illegal when it wasn't. The whistle was about something all the way across the pitch and 30 yards back and 15 seconds previously.You will know that because the ref will bring play back to the spot of the foul. I hope that helps. The scrum, all those bodies bound together, is a kind of face off. It's how play is restarted after a minor infraction. Back when I played the ball had to be put down the middle of the scrum and was more of a contest. Now they allow the #9 to feed the ball to his own team. After a tackle, if the tackler can get on his feet he can play the ball. The tackled player, after releasing the ball can also get up and then play it. He may not get up with the ball. The 'caterpillar ruck' is a tactic used to create space between the #9 (scrumhalf) and defenders so that the #9 has room to get a kick off before defenders can reach him or block his kick. It's only used when the #9 plans on kicking.

I’m sorry but watching the games at the weekend possibly made things a bit confused, methinks! However, you have a very pertinent question regarding putting the ball in the scrum. When I played, in the dark ages, it HAD to be put straight down the middle and a proper contest resulted. Nowadays it’s almost always put straight back into your team’s scrum and that contest is diminished, not eradicated because power and driving forward can overturn this, but I deprecate this slackening of the LAWS (not rules👍). I enjoyed your reaction and hope you’ll learn more.

With the scrum there are several things you are trying to do: - Drive = push the opponents backwards - Wheel = turn the scum around to allow the back row (6, 8, 7) to break off offensively - Collapse = (illegal) cause your opponent front row (1, 2, 3) injury/ pain The roles within the scrum are: - Tighthead (1) = twist the opposite loosehead (3)/ headbut him (illegal) - Hooker (2) = kick the ball back - Loosehead (3) = provide a stable platform for the hooker to hook from - Locks (4, 5) = stop you spine being snapped in two (provide stability for the core of the scrum)/ punch the hooker in the face (illegal) - Flankers (6, 7) = keep the ball in the scrum using your feet (legal) or hands (illegal)/ watch the ball and be ready to crush the opposing scrum half - Number 8 (8) = keep the ball in the scrum/ be ready to pick up the ball in an offensive break. N.B. the only forward who is allowed to pick up the ball in a scrum is the number 8 because he is the back foot. Scrum half (9) is the guy who puts the ball in and picks it up when ready to pass to the backs.

A ruck is technically just 2+ people. If the ball is on the floor and your opponent is over it he has formed a ruck and you must push him off. If no-one is pushing you/ bound to you when you're over the ball the you can just pick it up as that isn't a ruck. The ball can always be picked up by the person at the back of the ruck. Once the ball goes behind the back foot it has left the ruck. If you notice, the guy at the back makes a concerted effort to extend his leg back as far as possible to keep the ball in the ruck long enough for the scrum half (or whoever is acting as scrum half) to pass the ball out/ run in for another phase. A phase is the word for the play between downs. A phase ends when a tackle happens and a ruck or maul is formed.

you made a good point about kicking the ball forward, it can look confusing at times, as the ball will be thrown back to defence to kicj the ball forward, which means everyone is in front of the ball, First of all, this will maybe make it easier, the offside rule, is not to do with the ball, Its the player who has the ball you, you have to be behind him. so lets say, the ball played back to defense, everyone is in front of the ball kicker, they are all offside, what he does after the ball is kicked is sprint forward, passing his team mates in front of him, every team mate he passes, they aare now back onside,

You mention at around 27:40 about who can play the ball after a tackle. The sequence of a typical tackle and subsequent ruck is this: - Red 1 is tackled by Blue 1. Both go to ground. - Red 1, with their last move, twists and places the ball on the ground as far back towards their team as they can. - Blue 1 lets go of Red 1 and tries to get to their feet, or at least away from the contact area. They can't do anything while they're off their feet. - Red 2 arrives within fractions of a second and positions their body over Red 1 and the ball. - Blue 2 arrives and can only get to the ball by going through Red 2. As soon as there's one player from each side, a ruck is formed and you need to be onside, and can't use hands in the ruck. - Blue don't bother massively contesting it and focus effort on re-shaping their defensive line. If Red 1 is isolated and Blue 1 gets up quickly, they can get the ball before Red 2 gets there. If Blue overpower Red and drive them off the ruck, then they could win it. Otherwise it normally stays with the attacking team. Penalties apply if: - Red 1 does anything more with the ball than placing it with one motion. If they try to hang on while somebody's stealing it, that's a penalty. If they try to get up with the ball after being fully brought down, that's a penalty. Using your one motion to score a try, however, is fair game. - Blue 1 doesn't release Red 1. - Any player uses their hands while the ball is in the ruck. - Any player joins the ruck from an offside position. The "human centipede" you mention is a relatively new tactic I think, which artificially makes the ruck longer and means that it pops out further from the defensive line, and buys a bit of time for a good quality kick.

AT 15:23 the answer is the ball has gone forward so it is a forward pass and therefore becomes a penalty so the defensive team can take the ball and kick for distance to regain field position at 15:53 the scrum is a power and possession play to allow for the "backs" or the remaining players to set up a set play as all the power and strength players are engaged with the scrum. @27:05 Regarding tackles when a player is tackled 9/10 times the player will lay with the ball behind him or lie facing his team with the ball in front of him any attacking player can attempt to take the ball, once its released, however, most of the time there are either 2-or more players from the opposite team who will stand over the player on the ground to protect the play of the ball so that's why most of the time the opposing team will not contest the play of the ball
@jeanmanguy7900
@jeanmanguy7900 4 ай бұрын
when defending they usually try to turnover the ball, but while being on the offence the teams usually adopt formations to protect the ball, take a bit of time to setup the next phase. It is quite common to see big hits when the ball is being contested after a tackle, with big guys trying to clear the players on the offensive away from the ball, or they might to force the other team to a penalty, thus resulting in a turnover. Also, an element to answer some of your questions: there are rules in place to protect the players from injuries, sometimes making some phases of the game a bit more formal than you would expect from a very dynamic sport like rugby (there are also a lot of different tactics and strategies different teams prefer to use). Yes, defending players can totally try to make the players trying to make a try to lose the ball or to prevent a try by placing their hands under the ball (usually not by kicking the ball because the ball in these cases is sill in the hand of the ball carrier and/or very close to their head; that being said they can catch the ball from a kick inside their zone and kick it back or start a counter offensive).

very good question. It depends on the position of the hands. If the hands gesture backwards there is no forward movement
@Sonikgav
@Sonikgav 4 ай бұрын
Scrums used to be contested and the ball used to be played into the middle in both codes. This is why we have a position called 'Hooker', literally he's meant to be there to 'hook' at the ball, but there was such a history of Neck & Spinal injuries that the rules changed. Union does still have contested Scrums but the feed (where they put the ball in) isn't neutral in an attempt to speed it up though A Powerful team can still push the opposition off the ball if they're quick enough. In League it's basically used as a set-piece formation. Pack all the Forwards into a Scrum formation and pull out a play with the backs that you came up with in training while the field is more open etc.

The Rugby scrum is something like a Football scrimmage only nastier. You could say that rugby has three scrimmage situations. A scrum is the start of play after a handling error, it is called a tight phase. If a tackle is made and the ball is on the ground with one player from each team on their feet over it you have a ruck or loose scrum, this is a loose phase. If a tackle is made but the ball is off the ground and all players are on their feet the loose phase is called a maul. Mauls most commonly happen after lineouts but they can be forced in general play too. The rules in a mall is to use the ball or lose it. If a maul goes static the team who took it in lose possession of it and a scrum is awarded to the other team. there are other rules but that it the basic gist of it.

In amateur rugby you go for the ball when it's on the floor much more often. It's called jackaling. The reason they don't go for it in professional rugby is because a quicker team will deliberately not commit players to give their back line more width making it easier for them to score. Northern hemisphere teams were traditionally bigger and meatier. Southern hemisphere teams would totally dominate us by letting us play to our strengths (being big and slow). They still totally dominate us but we have learned not to get so bogged down in rucks.

How did you know my name was Derek? Anyway, yes. The ball isn't forward as long as it's thrown sideways. It just has to be perpendicular at the time it leaves your hands. edit: I should add forward passes can be hard to define. There is a type of pass called a pop pass which can be, pretty much, a player putting the ball into his team mate's gut. The receiving player could, in theory, be in front of the passer when the ball leaves his hands but that wouldn't typically be classified as a forward pass.

The best way to stop a try is to get your torso underneath the ball. Trying to get an arm or foot under the ball is way too risky. Another way is to tackle the scoring player hard enough for him to lose the ball but that's a one in a million hit.

The punting match to which you refer (kick tennis) is an unwanted part of the game. They keep trying to get rid of it as it's boring to watch but havn't arrived at a rule that cleanly stops it from happening. There is currently a controversy called the "Dupont law" that is going to need to be dealt with. I don't understand it but it's a kicking thing.

You are supposed to put the ball in straight at a scrum, but this is a rule that is never enforced. As long as the ball comes out of the hands backwards it is not considered a forward pass. Only the first player is allowed to compete for the ball, when a ruck is formed you cannot compete. The tackler can play for the ball, but to do so, there must be a clear release of the player . Also, you need to maintain your body weight whilst competing. I hope this helps

The towns\cities in America (and other countries) are named after the towns in England. Remember England was there first. For instance, there is a city in England called York, established in 71AD with a Roman name, and changed to York around the 1400s. The English who migrated to the Americas, paid homage to their old country by establishing the "New" version, i.e. New York, New Jersey etc. Here in South Africa, and also other current or former Commonwealth countries also have towns and cities with names that comes from England.

On the rucks (and caterpillar is the accepted term) it is all about being bound to the ruck - you are in contact with someone in the ruck (basically your arm is on someone else). You will notice the scrum half (or acting scrum half) stands behind the ruck not in contact with it and will eventually pick the ball up and kick it or pass it to another player. The ref will shout "use it" if they think a team is taking too long and can penalise a team if they continue to keep the ball in the ruck.

Rugby league scrums are not contested and mostly fed one sided (to the team in possession of the ball) where as Rugby Union scrum is contested and the ball is fed straight to the middle. The scrum is mostly packed by the forwards.... The bigger heavier players who are pretty much the engine room of the team. There are 6 forwards that pack a scrum in rugby league and 8 forwards in union.

To put simply for comparison. Rugby League is like checkers where as Rugby Union is like Chess. League is much easier to learn, much faster and I would say there are more harder hits/tackles, however, Union is more tactical and more bloody because of the rucks and scrums. I started with Rugby League as a child however I now find union more entertaining because league is too repetitive and you are just waiting for a break or bust in play for a score whereas in Union you can find different ways to win. Also I prefer the Rugby culture around the world. Ive travelled to 4 world cup tournaments Australia, France, New Zealand and Japan. The Rugby Union fans around the world are like one big family and always a fun atmosphere. Its the only team sport in the world I know of that follow an ethos.

Yes I know Scotland were screwed over… But only on a technicality. They have great potential as do Italy who are a young team in development but with great skills

Ok Rugby is Rugby Union. Rugby League, NRL or Super League is Rugby League. Scrums Rugby League prior to 2000s and Rugby Union. The 2 packs come together and push the ball is feed into the middle of the pack if it's a penalty the 2 packs try to push the other off the ball and the hookers hook for the or try to kick it backwards. The stronger the pack gets you more possession and the more possession, the better the chances of winning . Australian Rules is a completely different game. The reason the wanted to get paid was the blue collar workers needed to work 6 days per week. So if you played football you lost a day's pay. So they wanted to be paid to repay the money they lost for playing. The 2 markers in Rugby League the originally the play the ball was a2 man scrum now they are 2 defenders inside the 10. If you are tackled and let go of the ball and regather it. You propelled the ball forward and the forest a knock on so a scrum must happen with the other team feeding the ball so better chance of getting possession or. B. Moved forward of the ball and now you are off side resulting in a penalty to the opposition, both bad options.

Historically there's only been 4 teams win the world cup in rugby union. South Africa has 4. NZ has 3. Australia has 2. England 1. If you look at the stat's though of win/loss/draw over history, NZ is by far the most successful team and south Africa is a clear second. The next group of the pack are all relatively good compared to each other and that includes France, England, Ireland, Wales, Australia, Argentina and Scotland. Maybe Japan would be in this group too now, though not historically. Then there's the 3rd group which would be Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Georgia, Italy. Then there's everyone else.

at the end of the tournament Italy had a better tournament of Scotland, and Scotland lost against Italy. Probably only for this year, but apparently you have chosen wrong for the 2024

NZ and South Africa are heavy hitters yes but South Africa is the current reigning world champions. They are also back to back world champions and ranked the number 1 team in the world so it's no debate that south Africa is the best rugby team in the world.
