This is 90s emo mixed with a hint of Math rock. Emo is a different thing nowdays. Before it was a good genre with actual talent. Nowdays "Emos" are just kids who listen metal

Reminds me of Slint. Was started as a fun high school band who after their breakup dropped one of the most critically acclaimed math rock and post rock albums of all time, Spiderland, which, said by many people, to have changed rock.

American Football's LP1 is the foundation for midwest emo, and they didn't even realise it until bookers started calling Mike's agent to book an Owen tour and asking if he repped AF as well, because fans were begging for a reunion.

This is so beautiful. And so subtly math rock. I think it feels extremely natural and that's what makes it work. A lot of math rock stuff is meant to show off virtuosity but it sacrifices emotion in doing so. This song hits on both. It's both technically impressive for musicians to listen to, but people with no sense of music theory can also appreciate it. I think that's really hard to do IMO. I see a lot of musicians who make music for experienced musicians and a lot of musicians who make music for people that don't play a lick. I'm always impressed when a band is able to impress both audiences equally because those audiences are so different.

A lot of musicians don't wear rings when they play! It may interfere with playing, it may pinch and/or be uncomfortable, or even if it doesn't interfere with the ability to play it may interfere with the sounds from the instrument itself .. Some instrumentalists don't notice a difference, some switch their rings to unconventional locations (pinky ring, thumb, opposite hand, etc.), some wear special silicone/rubber rings, some just take the ring off :)

the one thing thats bothered me about this song is that it fades out in the studio recording. i just watched this live recording for the first time, and got the chills hearing the song end on the harmonic chord. that shouldve been in the song in the first place.. amazing song regardless

Because they recorded it when they were really young and Mike can’t sing that well in that key anymore so they play a lot of the LP1 stuff half a step down, a lot of bands end up doing it with earlier stuff

Unfortunately yeah, a lot of singers are more suited to the studio - needing much more than one take to hit the correct notes. I know the feeling. It becomes exponentially harder to hit those notes perfectly live where you only have one shot, and exacerbated tremendously when you're playing guitar at the same time. Especially the guitar parts of these guys, I still have no idea how he pulls it off. Watch some of their full live shows, his fretboard hand is going all over the place, and he's singing at the same time. Insane. Hitting half the notes I reckon is a bloody accomplishment, even for the most talented singer.
