The situation in Afghanistan steadily deteriorates. In the past 12 months, over 6,000 Afghans have been killed. Can a hostile population ever be won over?
"How do you turn communities from bad to good?" ponders Lt Col Woods. Six years after the invasion, the rhetoric has changed. Soldiers no long talk about wiping out the Taliban or hunting down terrorists. Now, the buzz words are tactics of counter insurgency. "We have to look constantly at ways to do it better and do it differently", states Woods. It's a difficult challenge. His men appear exhausted and demoralised. At night, the temperature drops to - 30°c. Blizzards have grounded the helicopters. Despite the extreme weather, troops from the US 82nd airborne are heading out for a ten day patrol. But the village has clearly been warned. All the military-aged men have vanished.
Next day, they guard the Provincial Government during a meeting with tribal elders. They listen uncomfortably to a litany of complaints. "A lot of injustice has been done", laments one leader. "Government forces loot houses, kill people, detain people". It seems the ongoing operations are causing nothing but resentment.

21:00 this is the kind of talk which we really like. This kind of talk ruined the situation for everyone somehow. It seems there's infrastructure and legalities missing to execute in a very western manner, for most of them. I think the takeway is "we never knew where we went or why, and had little to no business there". The region at large does not do "national socialism" because the logical / logistical unit of nation doesn't relate to them the same way, and soldiers are trained to fight between nation state actors. Funky, economically, to regularly patrol remote mountain villages with a herd of armed men!

The Lt. Col. Talks about an aspect that almost seems to be a stereotype of American Warfighter. He thinks because the US defines itself so much through "muh freedom" and talkes about it all day long, that this is the key Aspect the US soldiers need to bring to their Afghan Citizens. I don't think they care to much about freedom, Cultures seam to be stable without the American definition of it. E.g. Europe or China.

the administration had practically no policy regarding afghanistan, other than conducting a 'preventive war' which is internationally illegal. if you look at afghanistan today, and you see where the resources have gone (kabul), and what they're used for, it sort of paints a picture other than 'helping' afghans. it's a strategic area, and having military installations placed there, makes it far easier to push future policies with force. it's incredibly sad what the us government/ military has done to countless civilians, and as someone that lives within the borders of the us, i'm by every definition of the word, a dissident because of my automatic reaction towards wars of aggression that kill civilians in huge numbers, and further reduces their ability to live a semi-decent life.

Lol to be fair though who dosnt have guns and weapons in a country like Afghanistan? It's not surprising they came upon a cache really if u think think about it. It's like as if a military force raided a house in America and found some guns, so what? Don't mean much necessarily. Maybe he is a member of an enemy group or maybe he's just a non hostile but armed up guy like a farmer who has profitable crops to protect or a villager who own some arms for self defense of his village. It's like that sometimes,so everybody has them. Afghanistan is flooded with weapons,it's not hard to find rifles from the British imperial empire era and even older flintstocks and the most common is the Soviet type of arms. If You were a man and also had a family in Afghanistan you'd definitely want to get a gun. Half or more of the adult male population owns some type of weaponry. Especially it been a rough and poor, lawless country. Which man wouldn't buy an AK-47 and maybe even some RPGs if they lived over there. Afghanistan is also a tribal society with different ethnic tribes fighting each other, as rivals and disputes over land, money and power. He could be Taliban but he could also be some average citizen there, the U.S. army also has a lot of Afghan militiamen as their allies. Every guy has a beard and turban over there not just the Taliban. It's not just the Taliban who look that way. But the British couldn't conquer it all as they tried and would've like too, neither the Soviet Union a superpower also in its heyday like the British imperial empire, and the world's only true superpower in the 21st century, the USA,failed to tame and subdue the entire rugged, harsh, but naturally beautiful historic lands of Afghanistan. I think the vast empire , a superpower also in its day, the empire of Alexander the Great, also had trouble conquering all of Afghanistan, had trouble defeating the hostile locals there too. I think it's safe to say no country is going to bother fur a very long time to try and subdue, control all of Afghanistan by military force and invading occupying it for a long period. Afghanistan is a strategic important located country and is rich in vast mineral wealth and precious metals and gems under the surface, so much untapped potential, but lack of investment will hinder progress and prosperity. Apparently over trillion $ worth under its soil. If only the various Afghan factions and tribes can come together, put aside differences and focus on their shared future of peace and prosperity, build up the nation. What a shame and waste.
