Von's comments on the US were on point. Americans are viewed as being able to do pretty much whatever they want without prejudice, but that's not true. I believe our youth are the ones who are changing things. It's getting better like Von said, but we still have a long way to go. Love to all. ❤

I’ve traveled on biz ( I’m not wealthy, lol) all over the world. Watching newborn babies through 6 or 7? They are identical all over the world. Loving, open, want to play and feel safe. Curious but not afraid of others. Then WE ADULTS change them to be be like us. Like our parents did as well. Children learn hate from hateful parents.

The older generations in my family saw me as a weakling for thinking like this, but I didn’t allow myself to adopt their ignorant mindset. Acceptance and love and peace to all. 🥰

As an American, I think being gay or anything "outside the norm" is much more accepted if you live in a city or urban area, but in small towns and more rural settings, I think it depends. Where I live in the northeast I can probably dress and act how I like, but when I visit family in North Carolina or Texas, I have to act straighter so I don't attract negative attention from strangers. I also think that if I went to a more rural but still northeastern area, I might have a hard time too. The US is a really big country, and everywhere is different, so I would ask locals what is okay to avoid being hate-crimed. I also have really bad gay-dar, but that's just a personal thing. I have queer friends who are much better at telling who is gay or queer or not.

I agree with you. I’m from Georgia and there’s a lot of really conservative people here, but in our small community there isn’t much. I would say that’s thanks to the ELCA. The ELCA doesn’t preach stupid nonsense, they don’t believe being part of the lgbtq+ is a sin, and The ELCA also has pastors who identify with the lgbtq+.it wasn’t always like that but the ELCA changed and the conservatives here got up and left, because they were really pissed, so outside of this area is pretty toxic towards the lgbtq+ community, but here is an exception.

100% agree.....as someone who grew up in the midwest but has lived in NYC for 16 years, the difference is very stark. Im korean-american so i've ALWAYS taken care of my skin (mostly from the nagging of my mom and sister) and had at least an above interest in fashion but I do think back in the 80s-90s Im sure there were some people in the midest that might've questioned it. NYC is obviously an EXTREME to the other end where anything and everything is accepted but i do think larger urban areas are def more accepting and understanding. Actually, hoenstly, i think it's more that people just don't care

Androgynous fashion is more common with Gen Z. With older generations, the things Von says are true. But with Gen Z you can't tell for sure if a guy is gay or straight based on his clothing. They all wear pink shirts, they like to paint their fingernails, both of which are things only gay guys would do in older generations. So, it's easier to generalize about Millennial and older men's clothing in the US, but those rules are breaking down with Gen Z. I live on a fairly conservative town in the upper south, and it's an observable trend even here

"not that guys in america don't take care of themselves" hoo boy i wish that were true😬even here in cities it's more uncommon than not to find a straight guy who wears clothes that fit and are more than a t shirt, jeans, sneakers, and hoodie and who has a well-maintained haircut and neatly trimmed beard. At least it's becoming more popular among straight guys to be stylish and look put together nowadays. Dongdoni, I live in one of the Gayest cities in America, Seattle--you should visit sometime! we have an entire gay district and you can come stay at my house if you want and I will take you to some gay clubs and events, even though i mostly stay at home lol, I'm not very exciting for a bi nonbinary person. you'd be very popular here because you are so cute and outgoing and there are a lot of cute gay boys here.

Wish that were true too. I’m a straight guy who takes care of my self and has fashion sense but people think I’m gay. I literally don’t care though and will continue to dress nicely. I think the reason other guys don’t do so is bc of fragile masculinity but cmon, basic hygiene should be a given.

The arbitrary rules by which American masculinity and male bodies are policed are numerous and I would imagine are (as a U.S. woman) incredibly stifling. The extent some go to not have their masculinity or sexuality thrown into question is *sigh*. Some of it shifts with region, generation, or tons of other reasons (race, class, culture) but still, stifling.
@1faithchick7
@1faithchick7 2 жыл бұрын
Most cultures are like that, even Korea. Most gay men still don't wear feminine clothing for a reason there.
@leeosqueue
@leeosqueue 2 жыл бұрын
@@1faithchick7 Yes, I agree. Patriarchal cultures share some universal traits, including maintaining strict distinctions between man/woman, masculine/feminine, and as a result, straight/“not straight.” But admittedly, those expressions of those binaries can vary across country and region. “Feminine” clothes can mean different things - certain articles, colors, fabrics, lengths, styles of wearing it. Capitalism then steps into reinforce that using market/product demographics, so they know who they can sell to and make a profit (e.g. like makeup, cosmetics, skincare). In SK, a young man could buy concealer and maybe serum, but in the US (depending on family, region) the reaction could be drastically different. Again, very arbitrary rules.

Yeah, they might as well be who they are, it makes it a lot easier for women to know whether they are straight or gay and not wasting time on the wrong target. That being said, parts of the USA are not as open-minded as the media (I'm not from the US) would have us believe. There are anti-gay guys that might bash a gay guy up simply for just being gay, where as on the other hand, in asia, people may not be as open minded abt gay culture, yet they don't harrass you just because they have found out you are gay. Lol.

It's not even about gay men, it happens in all Western and many other countries. Musculine beauty is considered attractive there(not Only in America) , and if you look at the history it goes back to the ancient times. While in Asia, specifically in Korea people are not obsessed with musculine/strong features neither in men nor in women, they don't even find it attractive. Most of the the things like make up and basic skin care that Koreans do are considered as not manly and in the majority of countries and it's quite annoying

I think gaydar in a lot of places mostly depend on stereotypes. Like how he's saying that in the US if a man were to wear makeup or a fedora he might be gay. It's like certain fashion/ visual things become popular within different queer communities and that way become a way you might be able to identify other queer people. Also with regards to the fedora: if the guy is dressed a certain way with it I'll assume he might be straight and maybe a little sexist.

The umbrella comment🤣🤣... I was laughing so hard at the reactions. Umbrellas are used here, but in some areas like Seattle... we just wear hoodies or jackets with hoods. An umbrella here is like a show of weakness in your ability to survive nature hahaaaa. Also I agree with a few others who've already posted, gay acceptance is much more common in the urban areas than smaller towns and also depends on where in the US you are. Like in the south, big cities most often very accepting while small towns can be very dangerous because of prejudices. Before I got to know a lot about Korean culture, I always asked, is he gay? Korean men are just so beautiful compared to men in US. I wish the Korean skincare and fashion trends would take over the US straight men's trends. There's something very appealing about men taking care of themselves and their skin. I don't understand why guys here feel like they have to be bearded and dirty looking to be "manly". Ew, not thanks.

It varies a great deal by region, also between urban and rural areas. Especially with young people, it has become more normalized for boys and men to be more colorful and fashion-forward in styling themselves. Twenty years ago I would have looked at a certain type of guy and been automatically convinced he was gay, now things are not so clear-cut and I LOVE THAT! This is coming from someone who has lived their entire life in Idaho, so my experience is definitely not biased by living in a more modern, progressive or counter-culture place. P.S. Honestly you should have had a straight and gray male on to answer these questions because you are getting one side, in the case of the fadora's I know a lot of men who wear this as a fashion and a history and as far as men taking care of their skin we did call it metro sexual which was a term that was used for people taking care of themselves. As far as pink goes you have a lot of men wearing it for the women in their family who have had breast cancer or just to give support to women. As far as it goes for people doing what they want or dressing how they want does not define that person as being other- being human is the ultimate- love you stay healthy 💯 ❤.

For 30 years in France, straight men have worn a lot of pink... which means that this color is no longer "badly perceived" among homophobes... You should know that before the 19th century, pink/red was the color of men and blue was the color of women. In France, in the 17th and 18th century, many men of the nobility and the bourgeoisie made themselves pink outfits. Blue was "dedicated" to babies, children and little girls (and women) because it was the color of the Virgin Mary and to put on a blue outfit was to put oneself under her protection.

I think Von is confused with metrosexual & gay "gay". Some men really suit/dress up nicely and neat also following fashion trends but aren't gay, they're metrosexuals example is Stanley Tucci. Gays on the other hand are more experimental & open to try outside the fashion trends. But there's a difference with "masc" men, casual gay men & flamboyant gay men. The first looks & projects of more masculine so if in a crowd of gymgoers or even models it's not easy to identify straight & gay.

You guys are awesome!!! So I am a New Yorker and here there is no much prejudice! Fedora hats is not a gay thing here, they are actually consider stylish and cool and straight man and gay uses. ON the streets people are free to walk holdong hands and showing affection and no one blinks becasue its super normal for us. But of course US is a big country so in many smaller cities people might not be so used to see it, and in the south of US most people are very conservative and simple mind. And I have to say that with the Korean counture taking a lot space in the US and specialy in big cities like NY, LA, Boston, Chicago etc.... Now you see so many straight and gay man taking care of their skin, wering nail polish and jewlery a lot more :-) the make up its a it to much but hopefully that will be more common also:-)

Being American, but growing up in Japan, I can see a huge difference in what men deem as manly. Asian men really take care of their skin, it's not unusual to see a man misting their face with a toner, but you never see men do this in America.

I think putting prejudices to men that like makeup/fashion is Gay is not a right perspective. Some men do like to play dress and makeup, and not Gay at all. It's ok for Men to like those things and pursue those in Career. Men tends to avoid those things for fear of being put into labels.. And the same goes for Women that likes to do 'Manly' stuff.. like constructions work &etc. It's alright to pursue those in Career as well. I hate that based on our Gender we are being put into these stereotypical "Labels" . That Women should like this and want that, and Men vice versa. Hope for a better future for all humanity. For our survival, for our sanity.

Korea generally has a huge beauty culture because being considered attractive (for anyone) is an economic as well as social advantage. So both young men and women use every tool they can afford to enhance attractiveness including cosmetic facial surgery as well as routinely wearing cosmetics in the general population. Von’s points about how large and differentiated the US is true. The south, also called the “Bible Belt” and the middle of the country , what some folks here refer to as “fly over country”, is culturally different that the east and west coasts. So how easy it is to live comfortably and safely as an openly gay person depends in part on where you live. As well as the part of the LGBT community you belong to. But I digress. My hope is that whether in Korea, the US, or anywhere else; every person regardless of orientation, age, color, gender, physical ability has the right and ability to live authentically as themselves and express their full potential.

Though social expectations seem to be more strict in South-East Asia towards both men and women, but in a way men have more freedom to express themselves through fashion or hairstyle. I like that they can wear pink, or manga character t-shirts or cute beanies, and can be into stuffed animals etc and people don’t raise a brow, or question if they are manly enough, while in the US and EU toxic masculinity culture makes these acts nearly impossible. And it is so ridiculous, just think about it, in the 19th century blue was for girls and pink was for boys. These artificial standards are annoying. Plus what are the benefits of being tough and super macho all the time? Just put it in perspective, what are those fantastic things that came out of it? Why this should be the norm?

I'm so happy he kept emphasizing REGIONS of America. Big cities are far more advanced then clique small towns. When I moved from Chicago to Michigan up north I was in for a culture shock. No diversity. Everyone looked the same. No fashion . Heavy judgement and Bible thumping. Now it's changed. The churches are few - NOBODY goes. Those old heads passed that were racist and stuck on guys being bad are gone. We have rainbow flags in shops. I'm thrilled and I'm straight. Ps. 1. New York is shook they aren't mentioned representing the east. 2. Straight guys use backpacks mostly. Not small bags/cross body. 3. Skin care is Slowly starting to grow- we all know guys steal our creams on the low for their skin. More guys are getting mani/pedis..I think if you are fashion forward America will be like cool your not gay you just love clothes. However gay men LOVE labels and move different. There's heavy eye contact (3 second rule 😘) and heavy sexual energy looking at men, That gives off gay if you don't know or aren't sure. Straight guys look at another guy like "🤨" and gay guys look at another man like "😛😘😍"

I think there are clothes that can 'label' people (feminine fashion attributes, ie string strap - crop tops, chiffon blouses, 'pronounced' make-up etc which could label you other than what you were biologically born has. But I think that 'today's, male use skin, hair care products that their fathers would never been seen using or wearing. But this is 'conscious, careful' and well balanced effort by these 'individuals' by being on the 'edge' of looking good and 'well groomed' (please just be open and be your true you) 'always voicing' and ensuring that their 'masculinity' is never questioned . Which is a bit of a 'contradiction' (and 'excuse' ) for just wanting to 'look' good. I mean Honey..., just take a look at TikTok!.

David Icke said that cities create gay people. I tend to think he's accurate. I say this because in the cities everything is there for you. It creates leisure and from there it progresses but in the country and so forth a man has to be a man. He has to survive and feed his family so there's no room for that. So there is clearly a distinction from rural to city. I'll draw another example; in the inner cities people have to survive there on a daily basis so it is frowned upon to be gay as well as men and women but especially men need to survive and if you do not have the survival instincts then you will have a hard life. So I think social economic status determines whether you can even gravitate towards that lifestyle. If you have a strong support system parents who will support your feninity as a man then you have no worries but if you're born into parents that know you will not survive if you're perceived as gay then they will change your behavior. It sounds messed up but it is the truth and not everyone agrees with the truth.

I really enjoy your shows and this was an interesting video. I think Von does a great job of explaining how things are in America. He is right it depends on what state you are visiting or live in. I live in California so you see lots of straight guys especially asian dying their hair. Places like NY, Chicago, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Seattle and most of California being gay is no big deal. I didn’t think about the socks not sure it matters. Skinny jeans you see because straight guys are into leg and ass body building and want to show it off. I do think it has fallen our of fashion. Pink shirts was true but not now in most places. I know many straights that wear it but I don’t know about the south. I have lived in Philadelphia, Washington DC, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and now San Diego. Any guy with a clutch i would think gay. Makeup I would think gay but a fedora no. I know straight guys mostly Latin that wear fedora. I think an issue is when an guy is so polite and well mannered like a lot of asian guys people think gay. I think that is also changing a lot. Again it depends on where you are in USA. I been watching lots of asian BL series and have many gay asian friends. It has gotten me to be more bold in fashion. I would never have had a hand bag or shoulder bag but now I do/. Still not ready for makeup I don’t think it would look right. If I had hair I would color it in a second lol. It is so confusing to me that Korean guys are so much into fashion and skin care and makeup yet there is so much homophobia still. I would agree Jong you are easier to blend in there then most places in USA. You are very pretty which in areas not openly gay in USA would be an issue. Jun-young I wouldn’t think looking at him he is gay until he expresses himself. He is a handsome man I find him attractive. Von yes the hair gives it away and I love it. I think he has such a sexy voice. He is very handsome.

It is expanding in South Korea but... and there is always that but. The laws need to change to protect the LGBTQ communities in South Korea. Korean Confucians had used Confucian ideas, especially those advocating hierarchy and moral leadership, to bolster a powerful state bureaucracy to this day. Elders run the Government. Until those laws change, a lot of the Korean Gays will stay closeted.

Literally those tight necklaces made out of shell, GAY ALERT xD. I know, I wore one on purpose since i was like 12 lmaoooo..still, i think it depends on the generation as well as the region..but i grew up ALL over the east coast, from Miami to Vineland, NJ, and grew up mostly right outside of Nashville, TN.
