I wish if these had voices for the US and Germans who were there. It would be much better. Still grateful to see these men .. It's weird to think that all of them are probably dead.

One does not hear too much about prisoner exchanges before the war ended

It was quite rare. The fact is that after a month-long siege of the Brest Fortress, where the Americans lost more than 10,000 irretrievable people, it was decided not to storm the well-defended remaining fortresses. In particular, St Nazaire capitulated only on May 8, 1945.

No biggee here. The Germans withdrew into pockets of resistance in several French ports and the Americans did not consider it worth the cost of taking the fortifications and diversion of troops and resources to subdue these areas and allowed the Germans to keep them. As a result they had their own little war unrelated to the rest of the war and relations were more traditional between the opposing forces allowing for some prisoner exchanges of convenience, nothing massive. The allies would have liked the ports but they were not considered essential due to their westerly position so they were just sealed off. St. Nazaire, the site of the famous raid earlier in the war against the giant lock, "held out" until May 1945.

Mainly for wounded. IE, soldiers who wouldnt be able to participate in any further fighting.

Hard to believe the Germans were happy about being repatriated. As all it meant for them was to return to the meat grinder that 12-months later led to the unconditional surrender and collapse of Germany.

At this stage st nazaire was one of the left behind german resistance pockets. So, the soldiers did not end up to the 1945 meatgrinder in germany, but lead a relatively quiet and eventless winter 44-45 under siege. Some of these pockets were actually last German troops to surrender in may 45. The allied "let them rot" (as Churchill put it) after suffering substantial losses in taking of the festung Brest.

Pretty surreal to see germans and americans salut each other in he countrys way. im happy for both sides and i am glad that my grandpa got freed too. He told me that the americans didnt threatet them all to bad its not pleasant but it wasnt horrible. He met american prisoneers too and bot shook hands and wished good luck. War is hell but those people fighting in it still have humanity in them, no body is the good one and no one is the bad one

If I were a German POW I'd rather stay a prisoner under the good treatment of the Americans than be released to that small coastal town that was hundreds of miles from the main Western Front and completely surrounded by the allies who could shell, bombard and shoot at you in the small pocket 24/7.
