Brazilian jiu jitsu is catching people’s attention nationwide, and it’s not just men who are becoming obsessed. Across the country, women are showing up to classes and competitions, earning advanced belts, and changing the future of the sport. These are not just any women; these are self-possessed, confident, courageous women who aren’t afraid to fight. What I want to find out is: Are extraordinary women simply drawn to jiu jitsu? Or does jiu jitsu sculpt extraordinary women?
This is the story of my own first steps into Brazilian jiu jitsu, and it’s the story behind the powerful American Jiujiteiras I meet in my travels. But most importantly, American Jiujiteira is the story of how engaging with conflict can empower a woman to find strength she didn’t know she had.

Thank you for making this documentary. It validates all of the feelings that I have had through my jiu jitsu journey. I haven't cried on the mat, but I have definitely cried in the car driving home. I am a 63-year-old female blue belt. I usually am one of the only females, the smallest, and definitely the oldest person on the mat, but I keep showing up.

Best BJJ documentary ever…. I’m a 52 y/o male with three of my four children who train and I would want nothing more than to have my wife train also…. My 19y/o daughter was my second child to start…. She started at a club at her university…. Oh the changes I see in her…. The growth this martial art causes to happen to the humans involved can not be underestimated…. BJJ is life, it’s love, it’s the warrior spirit and the silver of world problems…. It should be required of all humans…. Can’t tell you how emotional this documentary made me thinking of my family and what BJJ has done for me and hopes for what it could do in the future….. love this

At 56 I decided to start jiu jitsu and have been training for about a year. Love it. I encourage the women in my life to try it because it is such an equalizer. I'm over 6 in height and 200 lbs and have tapped out to pretty much every size, shape, gender, and ability. Great documentary! Keep spreading the word.

The "Jyu" in Jujitsu does not just mean "soft" but also "flexible." I believe the latter meaning is much more applicable as you need to be flexible in trying different submission variants as well as physically enduring joint manipulations.

Omg, I'm only 12 minutes in and legit tearing up. IT IS TOO REAL, but so worth it. I'm in my 30s, a purple belt, sometimes constantly questioning why I keep showing up. Never cried on the mat, but definitely a bathroom crier hahaha. At this point, I couldn't stop training even if I wanted to, but that experience of really not wanting to go never went away for me. It fluctuates WILDLY, weekly, monthly, even yearly. Also, so cool that I've trained with or met so many ladies interviewed, small wild and beautiful world. TYSM for making this ❤.

I so loved it! The topics you touched on are the same I keep thinking over and over. I’m a shy, self-deprecating one stripe white belt, it’s so hard sometimes to get over the down thoughts about myself and the way I learn when it seems like I’m not getting a grip at anything at all. Thank God, the gym I train has lots of women, the male instructors are awesome and so understanding, the female instructor is a blessing! I’m really thankful for starting this journey. 💕 Lots of love from 🇧🇷 !

The Haitian Boxing Federation organized some years ago about 100 demo boxing fights all across the country, among them you had 7 mixed m vs f combats. All of the 7 were won by the female contender , 2 of them even by KO. For these matches 2 criteria regardless of the gender were applied: 1. the contenders were about the same weight; 2. they must have the same number of years of practice of boxing. The ages of these women were 7 to 30 years old. Every one was very much surprised by the result of these matches. I suppose that this thing can be done in any country, provided that these 2 criteria are respected. Unfortunately no videos of this promotional campaign were made, just a few photos. All the officials of the Federation are still alive.

Emily Kwok invented my half guard game. From a simple half, to a deep half, to trying to be Jeff Glover and failing. I'm a small guy. The fact that you could reap the leg from being mounted and make an insurrection was an inspiration to me. That guided my whole thinking in my time on the mats. And it all came from Emily Kwok doing a video with Stephan Kesting.
