In Mexico I spent some time learning the Yucatec Maya language, which is indigenous to the Yucatán Peninsula and has been spoken in this area for thousands of years by the Mayan people. Even though lots of people still speak it, the younger generation is forgetting it and it was really interesting to go around and try and speak what I could speak. If you are interested in learning to speak the amazing Mayan language and help preserve Mayan culture, or just if you want to learn Spanish online or in-person with good local organizations, you can check out the schools I learned with here:

Mayan is definitely not a forgotten language, most elderly people in our communities grew up speaking mayan, and most of us, the younger generations know at least a decent amount of mayan. We found out when we saw them and tried to ask which way a ranch was on the river. Brother was on leave from his German station in the U.S. Army. He asked if they spoke German. Ladies both responded "Ja" to my brothers shock. They spoke it fluently. A missionary from Germany found it too hard to learn their language. Eventually I learned how to speak basic español to make it through work. But I always mocked them and playfully joked around in my regional languages (I’m Indian 🇮🇳 ), they had no upper hand anymore hahah. Three cooks here would break out in Maya and we’d always pull each others legs. Such a fun time to go back and forth in literally 6 different languages at once!!!! (Later even worked with friends from the Philippines 🇵🇭 who had multiple dialects of their own to contribute!) There’s more than one dialect and some regions can’t understand the others language. This is because natives were decimated by the Spanish and catholic priests and were forbidden from speaking their native tongue along with practicing their religion. This caused the isolated groups language to develop differently. What’s worse is even now folks that speak a Mayan language deal with prejudice and and even regarded as an embarrassment holding the country back. But a white guy speaking it is cool, lol, seriously. A lot of Red Cross and Salvation Army foreigners learn it and fall in love with the culture. Side note, Germany has one of the only texts containing ancient history and language along with many artifacts they refuse to return to Guatemala and only agreed to return them as of 2021 but I’m not even sure if they’ve fallen thru.
