Honestly, I am always getting annoyed seeing the overdramatic patriotism in US movies. Hence, I appreciate letting this moment out of the movie.

Swampy to be fair... while they weren’t alone, they were pretty key in retaking Western Europe. That said... completely agree, egos need to be turned down a few notches.

James West, I reckon in terms of Western Europe, if any one of those countries involved dropped out of the campaign we'd all have been in deep kaka. Yep, the US was a key part of the battle and so were all others. The US played a huge role in both of the 'World' wars and in terms of warfare (not politics) were needed and appreciated. But then we could talk about the US Govt/CIA's role in destabilizing a plethora of country's Govts since the 40s. But we won't because I don't want anyone to think I'm giving the average American a hard time.
@jameswest9388
@jameswest9388 5 жыл бұрын
Brad Griffin oh yeah for sure... every country involved was needed. Personally I believe the US was a little less key in the first work war. They came in just as German had finished knackering themselves over pointless gains... their involvement of fresh troops and gear ensured the counter offensive over the next hundred days didn’t stall. Ultimately though, that wouldn’t have been possible without Germany’s spring offensive first. Talk away about it... I hope you’re not referring to me as the average American because I am definitely not American... unfortunately I can’t say much for being average.

Funny that they're more worried about the American-ness of the Moon than they are of the American-ness of Puerto Rico.

Very funny -- in a terribly tragic way. The so-called conservatives have forgotten that a nation isn't a flag and borders, it's the people. I think that's a symptom of fascism.
@dawne5139

Because Puerto Rico is an Island, which is surrounded by water and therefore impossible to get to. It is not like the states has ships of various sizes capable of taking supplies to an Island. Like a Navy or something. The moon does not have water surrounding it, so it is much easier to get to. Trump logic.

Of course it was an amazing achievement by the Americans but when you talk about historic firsts in history, nobody makes a huge deal about the nationalities of people who did things like visit the south pole for the first time, or climbed Everest. The *human* achievement should be the focus, especially in these divided times.
@magnetiktrax
@magnetiktrax 5 жыл бұрын
What a bizarre argument. How does celebrating human achievement equate to a kid hating himself, being ashamed, or pointing out his mistakes? You've got everything backwards. Nationalism never brings people together. The more you segregate people the more they become divided.

"Its easier to connect a nation of people, than a world of them" Nope, I would contend it the other way. Most of the engineering work was done by native Germans. Much of the electronics and so forth was European manufacture. And nation is extremely vague. Separatists don't think the USA should even exist. So how is it the USA doing anything? Yet everyone is on this world, and not even the rabid separatists would dispute that.

I think, and one may not agree on this understandably, that the politization or repolitization of society is in fact a good thing. Because that is where our lives, our fortunes can be decided, and it *affects everyone* . So to detest politics to me is very, very, very understandable, in fact i hate it too because of the corruption there, but to not at all care about it in fact is to ultimately give your own fate out of hand. Because a democratic society thrives on, and can only be sustained through private and public debate. So when the fun is gone, many always tend to turn their backs to sth understandably. But this is a cause worth caring for, and i think it is history's lesson now for us to care for stuff that affects us all. Btw, John McCain love hi or hate him, understood that too.

Funny story: one of the Nike shoe burners set fire to his shoes... while wearing them. Unsurprisingly, they ended up in the hospital with severe burns on their foot. Turns out some of the fabric of the shoe fused with his foot and now the dude might have to have both feet amputated. He chronicled his misadventure on Twitter. So next time you think "no one's actually that dumb", remember Nike Shoes Guy.

tbh, it was meant as an american achievement to one-up the Russians being first in space - it was part of the cold war arms race etc (easy to forget it never happened if you didn't live through it, the constant nuclear threat). It was meant to be a super American 'we are the most powerful people on earth don't mess with us' thing. It was military and political and scientific and only slightly 'human'!
