As a resident of Paducah, KY (where the American Queen docks many times each summer), I'd often see the boats from dry land and wonder what it looked like inside. This was terrific! Makes me want to go on it, even though it's literally in my back yard! Thanks for the wonderful work.

Saw the Delta, Mississippi, and American all landed on the Paducah Riverfront once. Seeing all three together really put the American's size in perspective. It makes the Delta Queen look like a johnboat.

Love the Victorian (Gilded Age) ambiance. The open decks are a huge plus in my book. One of the things that really irritates me about modern cruise ships is their propensity to resemble floating condominiums. Even the QM2 fell victim.

The Majestic American Queen had her last cruise today, she went under her own power to Houma LA where she is likely to be scrapped. Known Queensmen aboard were Captain Bert Suarez and Engineer Robert Hyde. A Scottish fellow killed her a few years ago with the Countess, but she held on as long as she could.

I loved this video so much and can think of many people who would be in 7th Heaven on this trip because of their love of Mark Twain and history. Between your marvelous voice and the lovely jazz music this was another gem of a video. I truly mean it when I say I enjoy your videos more than stuff I have seen on the Travel Channel. Not quite sure how I feel about the public balconies off the rooms. On one hand it makes for a nice additional entrance and exit into your room but it mainly negates the purpose of having a private balcony: to enjoy the lovely scenery in peaceful serenity.
@visitwithus
@visitwithus 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your lovely comments Katie. The balconies (or porches as they call them) are part of the authentic details of the ship. A private balcony simply wouldn't have existed on a paddle steamer of the past, so what you're getting is a more authentic experience. :)

Not sure I would like the open balcony. My experience in hotels that have this set up is that there is no privacy, you can't just leave your windows and curtains open to enjoy the view, and they can be noisy as people talk as they walk by, or stop in front of your cabin to chat and admire the view.

The open balconies are very southern/ south of the Mason-Dixon line those deep southern porches/veranda’s were necessary before air-conditioning to have a breeze and shade. They were also used in conjunction with the interior hallways (the outer hallway/veranda would have been used by servants, leaving the interior hallways to be used by the family.

I certainly doubt Churchill wanted to preserve the British Empire only because it had the unintended consequence of creating most of the world's best travel writers, but he should have. Much better reason for it than to save the Queen the discomfort of learning she no longer was weighed with "the white man's burden", wouldn't you say? Thank you both for your exceptionally informative and entertaining "travel writings"! If I may, Twain was born and raised in Hannible, Missouri. A small riverboat town North of Saint Louis and not far from my own hometown. Although you are within rights to describe it as you wish, Missouri is most often considered to have been a "Border State" between the North and South. To say Twain was raised in the South is uncommon, and likely to conflict with Twain's own opinion, could he be bothered nowadays to give one on such a trivial topic. Most likely, he's too busy being dead to care, though, but with Twain you can't be too sure, right? He did enjoy picking his words carefully, however. Have you visited Hannible? Back in the day, the historic plaques were a mystery for cryptologists and code-breakers. Tourists and locals both would laugh for hours joking about what they meant, and no one would claim credit to have written and erected them. They read like they were designed by a committee. Irony one of America's easiest to read writers....

Just a travel suggestion: If you come to the US and want a cheap experience as a guest on a real riverboat try the Delta Queen Hotel in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Delta Queen is a 120-year-old Mississippi riverboat that is exactly like this boat. (She was retired after about 100 years of service and is now a permanently moored museum and hotel. Kind of like the old Queen Mary in Long Beach, California.) The same cruise company that owns the American Queen in this video once owned the Delta Queen, which was once the grand lady of the Mississippi River for about 100 years. The boat is so old that she's 100% wood, including her lower hull. Each year Congress had to pass a special exemption law for the Delta Queen because her wooden hull was out of maritine code. (They've required steel hulls for decades.)

The carpets were the only part of the decor that didn't look new, and as far as the design goes, they were fairly in keeping with the overall feel of the ship. :) Boredom is of course a matter of personal opinion and taste. Thanks for watching and you comments. This steamboat is meant to be an accurate reproduction of the steamboats of the 18th/19th century so the design and decor will reflect that, hence the subdued colors. Also, the boat was not tired at all. I have a very keen eye for details and the decor, wood features, wallpaper and furniture were all immaculate. :)

6:50 I think it's funny that they have that little character named "Fred".....I wonder if that is a joke from a Navy vet? I was in the USN, and F.R.E.D. stands for "f***ing retarded electronic device" lmao 🙂

Every country has a shameful past Drum, and we have the probably the worst. But it’s how we remember it and our determination not to repeat it is what counts. 🙂

@@visitwithus Tonnage can be measured differently between flags, thus it is difficult to compare a US domestic vessel with, for example, a Liberian-flagged ship. American steamboat calculations used to include bales of cotton as part of the measuring, so there you go.

Your video title is very misleading. The American queen has not been scrapped. I’m a travel agent and American cruise lines now owns her.

The title is not misleading. ACL have no intention of using her commercially. I’m afraid she is due to be scrapped or sent to a charity but the general consensus is she will never sail again.

It's not a cali opie it's a kah lie a pea if you're going to talk about American things at least learn the American pronunciation. I like the open balcony but the chairs look really uncomfortable. Where are the chaise lounges? The chairs look absolutely torturous with their sharp angles and tight arms. No wonder the balcony was empty. Then there's the hot thick sticky air which can't be very comfortable.
