This band belongs to the genre "Alternative" and was everywhere in the mid 2010's. Alternative is my favorite genre for many reasons. It's basically rock tried a bunch of different ways. So many great bands.

Funny how things change. Alternative wasn’t originally a genre per se but rather a term like Indie or Underground identifying the artist as not mainstream or corporate. It was most often used when referring to any independent artist usually only played on college radio as none of the bigger (controlled by Clear Channel) conglomerates would play them because they were deemed not marketable. Alternative was an alternative to mainstream pop, rap, rock, metal, whatever. You had mainstream acts that neatly fit into these well researched templates and then the indie or alternative version of it. Like commercial hip hop vs. underground rap. R.E.M. and 10,000 Maniacs both had softer sounds but are definitely considered as OG alternative, including much harder acts. Before we had the term “alternative” it was just called post-punk or art rock. Back in the day you had a core group of Nirvana fans of their work on the SUBPOP label that called them “sellouts” for signing with a bigger label and Making Smells Like Teen Spirit. (I don’t agree with it, I just remember that argument going on my senior year of high school in my peer group when Teen Spirit came out.) I do like what is considered to be alternative music today as well. AWOLNATION is a great example.

Frikkin LOVE this song and I really can't understand why. Also the first time I've ever seen the video. It's an anthem and for a time it was used EVERYWHERE... every performer, dancer, juggler, cyr wheel acrobat has at least one act with this tune...

The band frontman, Aaron Bruno used to be called AWOL in high-school because he used to leave and not say goodbye. The band is his creation, he does all the writing, it cannot be boxed in just one genre. Wiki says " Alternative rock/electronic rock/indie rock/electropop/pop rock/dance-rock" - take your pick. To me it just sounds good and different. I highly recommend to watch the videos for "Burn It Down", "Kill Your Heroes", or listen to "Knights of Shame". Fun fact: Aaron was born almost deaf in his left ear and still can rock our socks off.

There was a point in time where this song was so massive that Tibetan monks were probably walking around the mountain monastery singing it to themselves in isolation. It was everywhere. Literally, everywhere! It was absolutely massive, and still bangs to this day.

Saw these guys at a small festival back in like 2018. I remember I was in line at the bar getting a drink and all of a sudden we hear the intro to this song, pretty much 90% of the line RAN back down to the front/pit for this song. Such a good time and memory.

Great reaction my friend & always LOVE this song. I highly recommend playing for Change - when The Levee Breaks (Led Zepplin cover w/John Paul Jones), The Weight (The Band cover w/Ringo Starr & Robbie Robertson) - songs from around the world. They do covers of songs usually with an original band member & musicians from all over the world in their own elements. Stunning music & I really think you'd appreciate them - they believe music is the universal language that unites us all. They are right. ❤

This is one of my favorite songs that's also an inside joke with a friend I used to share an apartment with..we decided to have a party before moving (bad idea cuz who wants to move shit with a really nasty hangover) and we had this song on and would yell "Sail" with the song. Somehow we moved a huge dresser, that barely fit the staircase, in just a few minutes and no scratches or anything. My buddy was blacked out but "Sail" kept things on track haha

In my opinion this song is about metaphorically sailing into the night... from life... At least that's the feeling I get from the video as well. It looks like someone who is struggling an finally giving up and ascending up the stars, sailing through the night.
