Yes, I found it funny when an American tourist complained that the monument in Berlin Tempelhof, which shows a Soviet soldier, had not yet been removed since the reunification of Germany. his words "why this communist propaganda thing is still standing." I told him that it was the Russian-Soviet army that took Berlin and thus finally ended WWII in Germany and Europe and asked him if he didn't think they deserved at least a monument for that.

As a German I think it's nice of someone to say he has German ancestors and is interested in learning about Germany. But some Americans say they are German if they don't even speak the language and have never been here. This is just ridiculous.

I disagree with the beginning. Most of us spend enough time on the Internet to be able to hear if someone isn't a native English speaker. So Americana and Brits might be thrown together (although a lot of people hear the difference between those, too), but we won't confuse Italians with Americans). But I agree that some of those points fit tourists in general, not just Americans. And unfortunately it's always the annoying ones that leave a lasting impression.

I'm from Rome, so I see millions of tourists every year. What I can recommend is just to respect the places you visit, Rome, Prague, Venice, Paris, Barcelona, Amsterdam and all the wonderful cities you can visit in Europe are not amusement parks they are cities inhabited by normal people. Second if you go into a Bar/Café/Pub and in a speech you say in English I am Italian/Irish/Polish etc etc it is true that we do not take it well. If you say I am American but you know my great grandfather was Italian/Irish/Polish be then probably someone local will buy you a drink.

The trick to surviving the Paris metro is to get the cue when the thing gets fuller, and people sitting on the fold-up seats stand up to, well, stand. Because if you keep sitting on those while everyone else is standing, you *are* going to get knocked around by elbows and will have asses pressed into your face, accidentally on purpose.

Every country in the world has some kind of prejudice/assumption about them. From my own experience traveling, use common sense, a few words can get you a long way. Have an open mind/embrace the culture. It's their country not yours, you're just visiting, be respectful. All the best from Denmark ❤

Ha! I remember my first visit to Copenhagen, for which I'd prepared what I believed was a perfect version of "Taler du engelsk?", but I might as well have been speaking Chinese for the blank looks I got. Switching to "Sorry, do you speak English?" got the reply "Of course, how can I help?", but it's still worth trying. All the best from London 😀❤

I have information from at least one video here on KZfaq that fast food in the USA is cheaper than going to the supermarket and cooking something yourself. Not to mention the time commitment. And there are supposed to be schools in the USA where children get McDonald's lunch, also because it's cheaper than anything else. If that is indeed the case, something is really wrong in the US.
@SherryBandito
@SherryBandito 9 күн бұрын
Not entirely true. If you are single I guess fast food could be cheaper than cooking for one. However I live alone and rarely have fast food. I just try to plan my meals better and freeze portions ect. I have never heard of any school serving McDonald’s. That can’t be true unless a lazy parent is packing it for their child. But I am sure no school serves it

basicly there are two ways of traveling, see an other country by going ,often organised, and visit tourist atractions, city's etc. than there is the other way, by also doing the touristic things but organise your entire trip yourself. make your own bookings, arange transtortation do your own research were, when, how and what you want to see and experience. the firt wan is seeing an other country, the secont one is exeperience an other country. the secont ine you will also encounter and have contact with local people and get to talk with them in a meaningfull way. that is a huge difference. and when you go to another country, do't do the american thing like were the best, becouse nobody outside the usa cares about that. if you wan't to get people to don't like you, that is a verry good way. also your constetutionional rights mean absolutely nothing when you not in the usa. don't think you can just video everybody becouse you are in a publick space. also saying things like, a am an american realy offends people. that is a way to dig your own grave, metaforicly spoken.

Here's a not-so-secret secret: English people know where the drunks congregate and decent tourists avoid those places, and anywhere there's an international football match playing. If you live in one of those places, you're very unlucky and you have my sympathies. Completely unrelated, Czechs seem to find Germans and Americans annoying because they uneccessarily scrutinise and quibble over bills (as well as Germany's history in former Czechoslovakia). The less said of their opinion of Russians the better, and they can spot someone English from a mile away (pasty and tattooed). They are unimpressed if you try to speak Czech, preferring to practice their English and so you don't butcher their language.

Languages: You only need the basics in a few languages to get by in Europe. Being able to say, Good morning and Good afternoon, Can you please help me? Thank you very much! And travel with a phrase book for the country you’re in. If someone comes up to you and starts talking in a foreign language that you don’t recognise, how would you react? Probably shrug and walk away. But if they start with, “Hello, can you help me please?” You’re much more likely to try and communicate with them. Same for us when we’re in a foreign country.
