@michaelrogers2080 There are some Rugby Union clubs in Rep of Ireland that are slightly older than Melbourne FC and they are still active. It's amazing that Melbourne didn't finish in the 1990s. It would have been better if Fitzroy stayed, and Melbourne folded. But people keep getting duped into saving Melbourne with their money. Brisbane Lions are a better club than Melbourne or Fitzroy, so it all worked out for the best. Fact: The board of the Melbourne Football Club voted in favour of merging with Hawthorn to form the "Melbourne Hawks". It was only Hawthorn (Don Scott) that prevented the merger. Melbourne should have been made to leave the AFL after that. They needed to merge but no club was willing to merge with them. The Melbourne Club was saved by businessman Joseph Gutnick. But after giving the club millions of dollars of his money, Mr. Gutnick did not become the owner or even a shareholder. Gutnick got suckered by that mob. Melbourne FC. So, Melbourne is the oldest club in a sport that they pretty much invented. What was the point of that until Geelong was formed? Melbourne has this claim because in America the first Football teams were college sides. The four sides that play "Florentine" Calcio Storico are all older that Melb. FC, and they still play their game The current oldest club in the EPL is Nottingham Forest (1865) Wrexham (1864) is the oldest in Wales. (1863) Stoke City is the oldest league club. 1857 Shefield FC, who still play, just not in the majors. Guy's Hospital Rugby Club was founded in 1843. Trinity College 1854. Durham Grammar School, Neuenheim College, Marlborough School all started playing Rugby in 1850. What about Rugby School? I don't know I'm from Melbourne. I don't know about Rugby. Except that they were playing their game when they were visited from Australia by Tom Wills. The man who invented Australian Football was sent to Rugby School, England in *1850*, by his father, Horatio Wills. Then he went back to Australia and "codified" (made up rules) to a game in a few years after that. Rugby was being played in a few schools took longer as did soccer. Melbourne's claim is what exactly? Being slightly older than Geelong FC? Congrats. 😑

Aussie Rules is my favourite sport. I like the NFL more than the AFL, but the NFL is really 2 leagues. Not only does the NFL have almost twice as many teams as the AFL, they don't have a large percentage of teams in one place.

@stevelozevski8151 True, but it is the oldest FOOTBALL club and still current. Geelong and Adelaide were the next 2 football clubs to be registered . Soccer existed first as an athletic past time and maybe exercise, but Aussie Rules was the first football game to be codified with rules and the original Melbourne / Victorian competition was the world's first organised football competition. Soccer is older than Rugby, so Aussie Rules is also older than Rugby. American and Canadian Football both started as Rugby......continuel rule changes turned American Rugby into the NFL . The world's first International football game was Rugby....The USA v Canada. The world's first cricket International was also The USA v Canada. Because the cricket ground is so big they didn't bother yo change the rules......they simply changed American cricket into baseball, to be played on smaller grounds.

The requirement to bounce the ball while running has been in the rules since the 1860s. This was introduced to even up the play and make it more difficult for fast running players. A free kick for catching the ball (a mark) has been around since the first rules were drawn up in 1858. Four quarters have been around since the 1880s. Used to be 2 halves. Scoring, a goal (6 points) the ball has to be kicked, if it is touched or kicked by the knee or above, or it hits the goal post, it is one point. Starting and restarting the game by the umpire bouncing the ball has been around just as long. Oldest clubs, Melbourne 1858, Geelong 1857, Carlton 1864, North Melbourne 1869, Port Adelaide 1870. The first 2 clubs are older than any in the English soccer club. Crowds in the 1860s were up to 10,000. By the 1880s some crowds exceeded 30,000. The Victorian Football Association (VFA) began in 1877. 8 of the largest clubs seceded from the VFA in 1896 and formed the Victorian Football League. (VFL) The league expanded to include interstate clubs in the 1980s and changed its name to the Australian Football League (AFL) Each club had its own home ground, but it came too expensive to upgrade them. In Melbourne all Melbourne based clubs now play their home games at Marvel Stadium or on the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Geelong play at Geelong, Port Adelaide and Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval, Perth Stadium for West Coast Eagles and Fremantle, Brisbane Cricket Ground for Brisbane, Gold Coast Stadium for the Gold Coast Suns, Sydney play on the Sydney Cricket Ground and Greater Western Sydney (GWS) at the Giants Stadium.

@michaelrogers2080 I believe it came to a head when Carlton played Melbourne and the Carlton captain instructed a fast running Carlton player to run without bouncing. Melbourne complained, but they had been doing the same thing. So it was then agreed that it was a requirement to bounce the ball when running.

U don’t actually have to bounce it tho u can hand ball it to yourself or touch the ball on the ground like rugby or drop kick it to yourself like Gaelic a lot of people forget that including the AFL themselves promoting the sport to the world. that’s why our game is so unique and the best in the world it’s so versatile u don’t need to necessarily follow the rules 1-1 all the time

Actually, with the “oldest football clubs in the world” thing, you would be wrong. There is a club called Sheffield FC which was formed in 1857, though have dropped down into the non-professional divisions of English Football (any division below the 4th tier) (they are currently in the 8th tier).
@blueycarlton
@blueycarlton 5 ай бұрын
@@EBGamez1 Sheffield played a game that was not compatible with Football Association rules. They played their unique game until they adopted the FA rules in the 1870s. So as a club that was formed 6 months or so before Melbourne, they do not play "their" game as Melbourne still does. Carlton that was formed in 1864 has played every year since. Possibly the only football club in the world who holds that record.

22 games for the whole year , then the finals. There are shorter players . They are usually fast and highly manoeuvrable. The taller slower players try and get it down to them so they can take off. Its one of the best features of the game as anyone can play as there is a roll for everyone. The flip side of that is everyone , tall or small, has to be able to do all the skilled aspects of the game like kicking , handball, marking , bouncing and running. Even defenders might on occasion have to shoot for goal and forwards have to tackle. Because the field is so big everyone has to be able to run though , the midfield players run up to 12 miles a game. Its a fast continuous game without the stop starts of NFL and its high scoring un like soccer . The rules are easy. Dont throw the ball , hand ball. Catch a ball thats been kicked 15 m and you can stop and take your kick or play on. Dont push in the back or its a free kick , dont trip ,tackles must be between the shoulders and the knees. If you get tackled and dont dispose of the ball properly after having a chance to then its holding the ball and a free kick is awarded against you . Run but you have to bounce every 15 m . Kick it between the big posts for 6 points . when the ball goes out of bounds the umpires throw it back in and both teams battle for possession . There are finer details but thats the basics.

Invented in Melbourne in the late 1850s and codified in 1859, Australian Rules is the oldest code of football in the world. In this period each of the British schools and universities played by its own rules, and the codification of Rugby Union, Association soccer and Gaelic football was several decades away.

The first organised game was played in 1858. The first governing body of the sport was the South Australian Football Association (SAFA) on the 30th April, 1877; closely followed by the Victorian Football Association (VFA) in late 1877, South Tasmanian Football Association and Queensland Football Association were established in 1879, the New South Wales Association was established in 1881, the Western Australian Football Association was established in 1885, with the North Tasmanian Football and Northern Territory Football Leagues formed between 1910 and 1917. The VFL began expanding it's competition, and in 1990 changed their name to the Australian Football League (AFL).

So to answer a few questions: •The games was codifed (basically got an OFFICIAL rulebook) in 1859, making the oldest codified sport globally, outdating NFL, rugby, basketball and soccer. •It wasn't entirely clear, but there are 18 players in the field PER TEAM, meaning 36 overall. •There are 24 matches in TOTAL over the H&W season. Teams get roughly even split of Home/Away games, however sometimes both teams may be playing their home ground if they share the same place (eg. Melbourne and Collingwood both have the MCG as their homeground, so while in the books it may be an away game for one of the teams, in reality it isn't) •Yes injuries happen often. Of the nine games played of a week (18 teams 1v1) at least one will always have an injury of somekind. Could be a streched hamstring, could be a concussion, could be a broken arm or collarbone; it varies. Injuries from marks aren't super common because the players train and know how to land from a height, but they can happen, most recent memory a player (Jeremy Howe) notorious for big jumps, basically belly flopped from 2 meters up because he got his legs swept out from under him mid-air and broke his forearm. •The red black and yellow flag is the Aboriginal flag and represents the indigenous people of the country.

The Australian Football League began life as the Victorian Football League in and around Melbourne with 12 teams in the competition. Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Footscray, Hawthorn, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Richmond, St Kilda and South Melbourne are all suburbs of Melbourne and there was also Geelong, a city about 75km southwest of Melbourne. While all States had their own football leagues, the VFL was the best league attracting players from all over the country. In 1982, South Melbourne moved to Sydney in New South Wales and became the Sydney Swans. In 1986 two new VFL teams were formed in Brisbane, Queensland, (the Brisbane Bears) and in Perth, Western Australia (the West Coast Eagles). At the end of the 1989 season and before the start of the 1990 season, the VFL became the AFL. Adelaide, South Australia, entered the Adelaide Crows into the competition in 1991. Fremantle, the Port suburb of Perth WA, entered the Fremantle Dockers in 1995. In 1996 the Brisbane Bears merged with the Fitzroy Lions to become the Brisbane Lions. That year saw Footscray change its name to the Western Bulldogs. Port Adelaide Power became the second South Australian club in 1997; the Gold Coast Suns became the second Queensland team in 2011; and the Greater Western Sydney Giants became the second NSW team in 2012. There are, therefore 18 teams in the AFL - 10 Victorian teams, all but one from Melbourne, and two teams each from New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia. In 2028, a new team, the Tasmanian Devils, will enter the competition.

Most of the places you don't know are suburbs of Melbourne. The league started as the VFL (Victorian Football League) and expanded nationally in the 80s and 90s, so of the 18 teams 9 are in Melbourne with another one (Geelong) being in a city about an hour drive from Melbourne. Before then each state had their own league. CFC stands for Carlton Football Club and St KFC stands for St Kilda Football club (both in Melbourne). There's going to be a 19th team come in in 2028 in Tasmania. Fremantle and West Coast are the 2 teams in WA, Adelaide and Port Adelaide are the 2 teams in SA, Brisbane and Gold Coast from QLD and Sydney and the Western Sydney Giants from NSW. Western Bulldogs is a bit fonfusing because they represent the western suburbs of Melbourne

The basic rules of the game of Australian Rules Football were drafted long before the rules of American football was standardised. The game was originally created to give the cricket players, a summer sport, some organised form of team sport to play during winter to keep them fit. As the game developed it quickly because an exciting spectator sport in its own right, mostly in Victoria but also in South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. It probably close to a hundred years before there was a substantial following in the other Australian states and territories.

Most of the team in the AFL are located in various suburbs of Melbourne. Melbourne (the AFL club) is located near the main business district of Melbourne. Their home stadium is the MCG, the venue for the "Grand Final" game that decides which team is the champion team of the year. Unlike the US Superbowl where the Superbowl game is played at a different stadium each year, the Australian Rules "Grand Final" is always played at the same stadium, the MCG. Carlton (the team with the overlapping CFC emblem). A suburb of Melbourne. Collingwood (their emblem is a bird called a magpie). A suburb of Melbourne. Essendon (their emblem is a military bomber aircraft). A suburb of Melbourne. Hawthorn (the Hawks), a suburb of Melbourne. North Melbourne (their symbol is a kangaroo). A suburb of Melbourne. Richmond, a suburb of Melbourne. St Kilda, a suburb of Melbourne. Western Bulldogs, based in Footscray, a suburb of Melbourne. Geelong, a regional city near Melbourne. Two more teams, the Brisbane Lions and the Sydney Swans used to be based in Melbourne but moved to other cities in Australia. All the other AFL teams were started in the cities they are based in now. Before the early 1980's there was no national football league for Australian Rules Football, most Australian states had their own separate professional leagues, and the separate leagues rarely played teams against each other. Melbourne had the largest and most highly funded league, called the Victorian Football League, but despite having better funding than leagues in other states, not all the teams in the VFL did well financially. In the early 1980's one of the Melbourne based teams, the South Melbourne Swans was facing financial problems and was enticed to move to Sydney (Sydney and Brisbane did not have any professional Australian Rules teams at that time) where it would have more scope to attract better funding and became the Sydney Swans. This prompted the beginning of a national professional Australian Rules football league with teams across the entire country. In the mid 1990's another financially troubled team in Melbourne, the Fitzroy Lions, had difficulty maintaining a home ground/stadium in Melbourne and accepted an offer to move to Brisbane in the hope that doing so would improve their financial problems in the same way the Swans move to Sydney had helped the Swans team financially. The Fitzroy Lions renamed themselves to the Brisbane Lions. There are two more states which currently do not have any teams in the AFL, Tasmania and Northern Territory (not quite a state technically but close enough for this discussion). The creation of a professional AFL team based in Tasmania was officially announced last year but this team is not is expected to be ready to play a full season in the AFL before 2028. There are no plans for a professional AFL team to be based in the Northern Territory. There is also the Australian Capitol Territory/Canberra, not actually a state. It's status is similar to Washington DC, it's a special federal zone created to house the Australian Federal government. Canberra does have a professional Rugby League team, the Raiders, and it could potentially be able to support a professional AFL team (the ACT population is a little lower than the Tasmanian state population) but there doesn't appear to be much interest in creating a Canberra based AFL team right now. The AFL league today is much more stable for funding than the old VFL was in the past, so there isn't much demand to move another team out of Melbourne at present.

Nice reaction video. I hope the info below is helpful to you. The AFLW finals are on right now (watching it as I type), so you might be able to find a place to watch them live. CFC = Carlton Football Club (Carlton Blues; Carlton is an inner Melbourne suburb). The game was invented in Melbourne and the Australian Football League, AFL, evolved by expansion of the Victorian Football League, VFL (Victoria is a state of which Melbourne is the capital), so a lot of clubs (9/18) are Melbourne suburbs. Collingwood is also an inner Melbourne suburb and the bird is a magpie, a native Australian bird (birds feature prominently as club nicknames; in addition to the Collingwood Magpies, there are the Hawthorn Hawks (another Melbourne club), the Sydney Swans, the Adelaide Crows and the West Coast Eagles). Essendon (Bombers) is also a Melbourne Suburb. The other Melbourne teams are the Melbourne (dah) Demons, North Melbourne Kangaroos, Richmond Tigers, St Kilda Saints (never noticed the KFC thing - hilarious), Western Bulldogs (from western Melbourne, not Western Australia). The Geelong Cats are from Geelong, a city about 1 hour drive from Melbourne. The other clubs are the Brisbane Lions (started as the Brisbane Bears but changed names when they merged with the Fitzroy Lions, a club relocated from Melbourne) and the Gold Coast Suns in Queensland, Sydney Swans (South Melbourne Swans relocated to Sydney as the first step the expansion of the VFL to a national competition) and Greater Western Sydney Giants) in New South Wales, Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide Power in South Australia and West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers in Western Australia. This year, a new club in Tasmania was announced but won't start playing in the AFL for a few years. Darwin is a small city but the capital of the Northern Territory. Aussie rules football is big in the Northern Territory and some champion players have come from there, but it does not have a team in the AFL, mainly due to the small population and economy. Once Tasmania joins and there are 19 teams, with the need for a bye every week, I think there will be pressure to include a team from Darwin. Yes, there are positions and when the ball is bounced in the centre (at the start of each quarter and after every goal), the players need to be in their staring positions (within marked areas on the ground). However, after that, they are free to move and often all 36 players will be within a kick of the ball. There are specialised players but all players need to have pretty much all of the skills of the game: marking, hand balling, kicking, tackling. We don't have separate offensive and defensive teams or punters like in American football. In this respect, it is a bit more like soccer, except that there is no goalkeeper. Injuries during a marking contest are not very common. The players practice taking high marks and landing safely during training. Injuries occur more frequently during tackles or just when the player is twisting and turning to evade a tackle. It is common for people reacting to Aussie rules to think that it was cobbled together from lots of other sports (like soccer, rugby, American football and basketball), but the first game was played in 1858 and the game was codified (the laws set down) in 1859, making it one of the oldest codes in the world. You are right; there are a lot fewer stoppages in Aussie rules compared with American football. It is fast paced and flowing. Also, there are no time outs, just 5 mins between the 1st and 2nd and between the 3rd and 4th quarters and 20 mins between the 2nd and 3rd quarters. There are 22 home and away games (11 home, 11 away) total. Actually, in 2023 there was an additional round, so 23 rounds (presumably, half the clubs only got 11 home games and half got 12). To give players a bit of a break, there are three weeks when only six games, rather than nine, are played, so that was a total of 24 weeks. There is also a 1-week break before the finals and the finals take 4 weeks, so the whole season took 29 weeks. Yes, the average AFL footballer is pretty tall but there is a range of player sizes. The tallest players are ruckmen. They are the ones who jump up to tap the ball when it is bounced, thrown up or thrown into the field of play by the umpire. The current tallest player in the AFL is Mason Cox, who played for Collingwood. He is an ex-basketball player from Texas and is 211 cm (6'11") tall. However, it its important to have a range of player sizes in a team. The big guys can fly for an overhead mark or try to punch the ball away from a player trying to take a mark but you also need a quick little player to try to gather the "crumbs" (balls that are not marked but fall to the base of the pack). The shortest player in the AFL is Caleb Daniel (Western Bulldogs) at 171 cm (5'7"). The black and red flag with the yellow circle in the middle is the Aboriginal flag. Aborigines (native Australians), as a rule, have a great talent for this game and have played an important role in the AFL. Some of the greatest players of all time have been Aborigines. Although they only make up 3.8% of the Australian population, 10% of AFL players are Aboriginal. There is some evidence that the origin of Aussie rules may have been influenced by a traditional Aboriginal game called Marn Grook (meaning "ball game"). An early account does sound suspiciously like the style of Aussie rules: "The men and boys joyfully assemble when this game is to be played. One makes a ball of possum skin, somewhat elastic, but firm and strong. ...The players of this game do not throw the ball as a white man might do, but drop it and at the same time kicks it with his foot, using the instep for that purpose. ...The tallest men have the best chances in this game. ...Some of them will leap as high as five feet from the ground to catch the ball. The person who secures the ball kicks it. ...This continues for hours and the natives never seem to tire of the exercise." (books.google.com.au/books?id=As9AAAAAMAAJ&q=joyfully+assemble&redir_esc=y#v=snippet&q=joyfully%20assemble&f=false). Yes, the game is usually played on cricket grounds. This enables the space to be used year round (footy in winter months, cricket in summer). Some state that Tom Wills invented the game to keep cricketers fit during winter, although I understand there is some dispute about this.

The oldest football code in the world. They were playing this game in Australia before the civil war in America. Yes basketball size players running up to 15 miles a game, leaping to catch balls, tackling or bumbing at high speed. Kicking the ball up to 70 yards, almost continues non stop play. Very short stoppages before the ball can quickly move from one part of the ground to another, up 60 yards away where one against one battles of speed and strength occur before the ball moves quickly again. Two hours divided into quarters and the winners are proclaimed. The Roman colosseum on steroids, and the crowds of up to 100,000 going wild with every victorious play during the game.

You are right about the different builds of bodies between Rugby and ALF players. While there is a degree of overlap and exceptions, Rugby players a often stockier in build while AFL players are more often taller and leaner. I think it has to do with what body type works best in winning those games.

This game was created in 1850s but codified in the 1890s starting with the VFA (Victorian Football Association) which was an amateur league in Melbourne when the Cricket was in it's off season (Cricket itself was also a very old sport alongside Rugby Union) which was Autumn and Winter. Then in 1896 eight teams broke away because players wanted to get paid and formed the VFL (Victorian Football League) with the suburban Melbourne teams i.e. Collingwood Magpies, South Melbourne (Now Sydney Swans), Melbourne Demons (The oldest team in the league established in 1859), St Kilda Saints, Fitzroy Lions (merged with the Brisbane Bears in 1996 to form the Brisbane Lions), Carlton Blues (The CFC Monogram logo that you were trying to work out established in 1864), Essendon Bombers, and the second oldest club (est. 1860) an outer Victorian town of Geelong (about a couple of hours drive southwest of Melbourne) called the Geelong Cats
@berranari1
@berranari1 8 ай бұрын
Although Melbourne was not called the Demons until the 1950s. They were the "Fuchsias" (that's a flower). Geelong was not called the Cats until the 50s or 60s and they were briefly the "Black Cats". Fitzroy was not the Lions until the 1960s. Before that they were the "Maroons", and then the Fitzroy Gorillas in the '50s. Only Collingwood has had its mascot and nickname of Magpies since the 19th century. They also have the oldest club song. Hawthorn was the "Mayflowers". Hawks are better. 😀 Bombers became Essendon's nickname after WWII because of the Essendon Airport.

We know where they all are. The ball isn’t round, you cannot throw a ball forward, you can only handball forward. No, it is not like any other game because it was first before you had football. We even use our feet and do not wear pads. These are elite athletes that have to run on average over 10 miles in up to 90 minutes without losing any skills. You need to watch What is AFL. It is fast and it is fun, it is played on the biggest field of any sport and the field is oval. A normal grand final crowd at The MCG is between 95,000 and 105,000 fans. There is nothing like the roar of that crowd at the G. Yes, we shorten everything. Collingwood mascot is a Magpie, most of the teams are from Victoria. Then they sent South Melbourne to Sydney and they became the Sydney Swans until almost every State has one or more teams. CFC is Carlton Football Club or the Navy Blues. Both teams I mentioned are mine and they are the two biggest enemies in the league. I took over Carlton for my Dad when he passed so young and I never watch when they play each other. Both are still Victorian teams.

What adds to he excitement of Aussie rules footy is that the oval ball can randomly bounce anywhere, keeping the players on high alert. This game would be one of the oldest. It is inspired by a game played by the aboriginal/first nations people who called it 'marn grook' and used a stuffed animal skin for a ball. Tom Wills, one of the inventors of the game, watched them playing it on his family's farm in (Western) Victoria, the state of origin of the game. The flag that you queried is the first nations flag. The remnant aboriginal people of Australia are the oldest culture in the world, many thousands of years old. The AFL players are supreme athletes.

There are players of all heights from about 5'6" to over seven foot. Except for the ruckman which is the player that takes the centre bounce most of the players in mid-field are generally the shorter players while the full forwards and full backs are generally the tallest. Players may be able to move anywhere on the field during the play but have to start out from set positions for set plays like the centre bounce or the line throw in. It should also be noted that most AFL fields are about 200 metres long and around 150 metres wide so there is a lot of running needed to be done in any game for most of the players. The full forwards and full backs only occasionally might move further out than about 50 metres from their properties goals and the mid fielders like the wingers will generally stay within a centre zone that ends about 50 metres from each goal unless they are on the ball or actively chasing those who are on the ball. Passing the ball forward to a teammate by an accurate 50 plus metre kick is not uncommon, either on the left foot or the right foot, it doesn't really matter to most players.

The game evolved separately throughout the country, but the current league evolved from the Victorian Football League (and these days the other major leagues tend to follow their rules - they sometimes have small differences in rules, but ultimately their rules derive from the Laws of the Game as stipulated by the AFL (and any variation in a particular rule is usually explicitly specified in a separate document).

Teams play occasional games up there. 18 players per team on the ground, specific player starting positions at the start of each quarter and after goals are now required. Game started in 1858 so is older than many of the other sports you feel parts of were copied from. Injuries from marks happen but not as many as you probably think as players are conditioned from a young age taking a ‘mark/specky’ over a sibling. Players getting winded and head cuts are probably higher than other injuries. Between the 2 large posts (goal posts) without being touched by any player is a goal - 6 points. Hitting the goal post or going between goal and smaller post (point post) 1 point. Hit the smaller post without the ball being touch is out of bounds and a kick is paid to the apposing team. 22 games all up 11 home 11 away games before finals. Players range from about 5’ 8” to 7 feet, Flag is the Australian Aboriginal Flag. Hope this helps.

Hitting the (goal) post is bad, o.k. we don't like that. The post forms the outside boundary of the goal. So hitting the post is outside of the scoring area, even if it then bounces into the goal, it doesn't count..........because of reasons. The sport was "created" waaay back in the 1850's. So, it's not so much that it's similar to a bunch of other sports, but the other way around. The main guy (Thomas Wentworth Wills) was a Rugby (and Cricket) player during his school years in England (even though he was Australian) when he returned to Australia he insisted that "We must have a game of our own" and the Melbourne Cricket Club thought that was a brilliant idea. That's why the home of AFL is the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Probably fairer to say that by mid 19th century there were various attempts to merge the many various forms of football that existed across the british isles at the time. Aussie rules (1859) and Gaelic rules football amongst the earliest that survive but there were other earlier attempts. Aussie rules was basically an attempt to merge Cambridge Composite rules(1848) with others including Rugby type rules. Another attempt in the UK resulted in the FA ( soccer) in 1863. The Rugby Union formed in 1871 using again a compromised set of rules. But both FA and Rugby obviously draw from football traditions that go back centuries earlier. Marngrook is often quoted in relation to Aussie Rules, but its difficult to see exactly what influence if any it had on Aussie Rules. It was essentially a game of keepy-uppy with no scoring or teams, the winner being the individual deemed to have played with the most skill and flair.
@ianes6377
@ianes6377 5 ай бұрын
That's not my understanding at all. Australian football arose completely independently of rugby and soccer and has virtually no rules in common with either of those codes. Or, obviously, US football which came into being much later. Cambridge Composite rules - which I've never heard of, but presume they relate to soccer - have nothing to do with football, which was codified years before soccer happened along. The first football game was played between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar School in 1858. Apart from (roughly) the shape of the ball, football bears virtually no resemblance to rugby, with no off-side, no throwing allowed, an oval pitch rather than rectangular, different scoring system, different goals, different playing periods, different numbers of players in the team, and football features high marking and kicking and hand-passing and so on. It appears to have been influenced initially by the Aboriginal game of marngrook.

Actually that's not even close to true. The two codes share some elements of play, but they arose independently - Australian football in 1859 and Gaelic more than a quarter of a century later in 1885. If there was any influence between the codes, it would have been Australian football influencing Gaelic, rather than your suggestion.

I believe Tasmania is getting a team in 2028? And at that point, with an odd number of teams and someone getting a bye every round, I suspect it'll go up to 20 before long... and given the Northern Territory's apparently pretty into footy, I reckon the smart money's on the 20th AFL team being from there.

Fremantle is the port of Perth. The western bulldogs are actually the western suburbs of melbourne (originally called Footscray) where the AFL started (hence 10 teams alone being in Victoria). You've naively murdered a few pronunciations, 😉 but i'll just stick to my team. Geelong is pronounced more like djil-long; originally from an aboriginal word djilang, a meeting place where everyone from all tribes gather together in peace and harmony. GO CATS!! 😺

Honestly, I think the What is AFL? video from a few years ago explains things better than this one. Although foreigners are always confused about the scoring.
