There are a few elements that make NZ rugby consistently good 1. It is their national sport (by far!) 2. They adapt incredibly quickly to any changes in the laws. 3. Their fitness is second to none 4. The speedier backs are traditionally the ball handlers and passers, but in NZ rugby, the handling skills and passing of the bigger, heavier forwards is practised assiduously, making their forwards incredibly mobile and potent. 5. They seem to have a sixth sense of where their support players are 6. They're more imaginative in their play than most other teams.

Tony, you almost hit the nail on the head. NZ ers grow up from day one with a rugby ball in their hand. They learn to spiral pass, catch, spiral kick, and know how to offload. For a tiny nation they punch above their weight in all sports, but rugby is heaven.....god, country, rugby.

I'm impressed with how much you've picked up on with just the first two videos. Here's a few things you may find useful/interesting: When scoring a try, players will try to place the ball as close to the goal posts as possible to make the conversion kick easier (extra 2 points). The kick is taken perpendicular from where the ball was touched down. NZ are #1 and very dominant but in the last few years, other elite teams have been catching up. For example, Ireland have beaten them twice recently. NZ was really in their prime during the 2015 world cup, so if you are looking for some real champagne rugby, I would look that up. Rugby teams are broken up into two halves, the forwards (1-8) whose primary role is to compete for the ball in rucks, scrums & line outs, and the backs (9-15) whose primary role is to outfox the defense and score tries. All players have an integral role in both attack and defence. Forwards are the slow bois who come in all shapes and sizes and perform a variety of specified tasks on the field (usually dictated by their shape). For example, thicc bois are up at the front of the scrum and tall bois get lifted to catch balls in the line out. Backs are generally very fast players that are marshaled around the field by the #10 who fills a playmaker role on the team. #9 is the link from the forwards to the backs. He's the little guy that picks the ball out of the back of the ruck or scrum, after it has been secured by the forwards. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions, just ask. :) Cheers.

Just to add to that a little. The numbers on the shirt shows what position they play, there's no "I want to have this number" you simply wear the shirt that corresponds with your position. #11 and #14 are normally the fastest of the fast bois. #9, #10 and #15 are the most "thinking" positions where you have to be very good at reading the play, reading the defense, making decisions etc.

This is a great comment Mike. This ignorant american has made some fantastic insights for someone so new to the game. For example, the rewind on Ben Smith "accepting the blast!" as he makes the final pass is a very significant observation that non-players often don't understand. I can tell you that getting the final pass off as you get hit is incredibly rewarding and you train to "accept" the collision to reduce injuries. Often the harder the hit the better as you know the defender has been taken out of play and the try will be scored. It's the tackles you don't see coming which hurt the most!

Hey you, i'm french, from Paris, my grandfather was an international rugby player, played for France during the 50s - 60s. I've been playing rugby for a while too in Stade Français, and i really think you understood the most important things about this sport. That team spirit is the most important thing to understand, and that's why those guys are always looking for a teammate across the field, as you noticed. In a sport like rugby, you're no one if you do your thing on your own. Worse : you can get badly hurt, cause these guys are real athletes. Rugby creates bonds between humans like few other sports do. Its like going to war together (whatever your level is, from 3rd regional division to elite, a tackle by a 120kg guy will hurt you). You'd also be pretty impressed by the attitude of the players after the game. As soon as the ref blows the whistle, everyone shakes hands, smiles, in a very warm and friendly way. It may seem strange cause you've just spent 80min trying to destroy your opponent. But actually when you re on the field, you know what the risks are, you experience a sort of fear/excitement/adrenaline and you know that your opponent has experienced the exact same feeling. Rugby is like a deep and strong brotherhood. Now on a more technical point of view i noticed that you said "ow that guy looked slow" at some point of the video. Well you're right, but thats another very interesting thing about rugby. Although everyone tends to be really fit (especially at the elite level), rugby is a sport where pretty much all the body shapes are allowed. The front row (numbers 1-2-3) are those massive short explosive guys that do a lot of hard work in the rucks, and trust me, their legs are huge. Those guys are squat machines. They push hard during the static phase called scrums, which basically consists in the clash of two packs of 900kg each... Imagine the pressure on your back and legs. Usually when you do that during 80 mins you're just as dead as if you had run a marathon. Numbers 4 and 5 are those super tall guys who jump very high to get the ball, and push hard behind the front row during the scrums. Numbers 6-7-8 are more like runners, chasers but still very massive (they also push during the scrums). They are here to make the rucks clean, to keep the ball alive, and they are tackling machines when it comes to defending. Big guys with a huge cardio. So maybe it would be interesting for you, as a beginner, to start by picking up the numbers on the shirts. From 1 to 8, generally those are the massive guys (i'm simplifying there but its a good start) who do a lot of pushing/defending/tackling/jumping. Sort of a shadow work, but soooo important for the fast guys to express themselves when the ball is clean. In old style rugby those big guys could barely make a pass, they had no real skills, just strength. In modern rugby, you'll often spot a guy with a number from 1 to 8 inside of the attacking line making a difficult pass, or on the side of the attack kicking and chasing. That would have been pretty impossible two decades ago, but now everyone has to be skillful, and not only strong. At 2:44 you can see the number 5 (super tall guy) making a difficult pass to the 17 (who is a front row, but wears the 17 cause he is replacing one of the guys with 1-2-3), who puts the gas on and runs pretty fast. Now this is a perfect example of modern rugby, big guys who used to be fat and just strong are now skillful and fit. And trust me, when you re pushing/defending/jumping etc. during a whole game, still being able to deliver a skillful pass or put the gas on demands a high level cardio. Great teams like the All Blacks have those kind of players, not only good at what they have to do in the rules of rugby, but also being skillful as fuck. Now stop the video at 3.45, and look at the numbers of the guys around the zone where the ball was on the ground (the tackle zone). 4, 5 and 3 for the All Blacks and 3, 7, 8, 5 for the yellow team (Australia). Thats an illustration of what i just explained : those guys are the big guys who work hard on the tackle zones, wrestle etc. to be able to get a clean ball for the fast guys to express themselves. Anyway i really think you're picking up more and more things, rugby is a beautiful sport, sometimes a bit complex but its really cool to discover.

The numbers represent the player positions 1-23 There are 15 on the field in each team and 8 replacements, 3 of the replacement must be specialist front row players for the scrum. 1-8 are forwards as a rule they are big/heavy and strong they are usually involved in the 2 set pieces in rugby, the lineout and the scrum. Both are used as a means to start the game after play has went dead. If the ball goes out over the sideline there will be a lineout, the team who put the ball out lose possession and the other team gets to throw the ball in, both teams are eligible to compete for the ball as it's thrown in though. This is where numbers 4 and 5(called locks)are specialists, they are usually the tallest players on the team as they will be able to out reach the opposition and retain the ball or steal opposition ball easier. For example Ireland have a 6ft11 inch tall player for this position. The 2 locks also make up the second row in the scrum. Scrums usually occur when the ball is knocked(control is lost and it hits the ground or another player)/passed forward, the team who knocks it on loses possession and the opposition has the put in to the scrum, both teams are allowed to compete for possession for the ball during the scrum. The scrum is made up of 8 players(all the forwards) from each team 1-3 form the from row 4 and 5 are the second row 6,7 and 8 are the back row. 1 is the loose head prop he lines up on the left hand side of the front row, he's called a loose head because when bound to his opposition his head is free. On the right side of the scrum is number 3 the tighthead prop, his bind he has his head between his opposition loose head and hooker, tighthead has to be very strong as he has to push against 2 players rather than one. The hooker is number 2, the 2 props are to take as much pressure off the hooker as possible to give him the opportunity to catch the ball with his feet and bring it back to his teams side when the ball is put into the scrum. This is done in a hooking motion, hence the name hooker, nothing to do with selling his body on the streets, all the hooker I've played with gladly give it away for free.

Great video! One of the things that makes the All Blacks such a good team is the speed at which they can get the ball out of a ruck. This means that the defence has less time to reorganise and it makes it much easier to gain ground in attack. Getting the ball out of the ruck quickly requires excellent technique from the tackled player to place the ball cleanly towards his teammates, aggressive clearouts from the forwards to remove opposition players from the ruck who are trying to prevent the ball getting out quickly, and great organisation from the scrum half and fly half to ensure that the team is immediately ready for the next phase of the attack.

So good to see new american rugby fans, considered your culture and love for sports! Quick answers to the questions raised in the video: Is this like soccer, where the best player wears number 10? No. Each role has its number. The starting squad will always be numbered from 1 to 15. Number 10 is the "flyhalf", the guy in charge of the "backs".. Are the All Blacks the best? There is an elite of teams? Yes, the All Blacks are considered the best national team in the world. They win most of the games, they rarely lose. The best national teams are (not in order): NZ, Australia, South Africa, Argentina, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France. Other teams such as Italy, Japan, Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Georgia are a step lower. For more info check the World Rugby Rankings. They obviously lose sometimes but it’s considered an upset when they do. No matter who it was that just beat them. France, England, SA, Aus, Wales, Argentina, Ireland. If the ABs lose to any of these teams it’s considered an upset which is crazy considering there’s only 4 million people in NZ.

The conversion kick after a try where you get the chance to add an extra 2 points on top of the 5 for the try is taken in line with where ever the try is scored along the try line. So the closer to the posts the try is scored, the easier it is for the kick to be made over the posts. I hope this helps :)

@ 4:03 the reason why number 10 (Beauden Barrett) ran back around in the "end zone" was to make it easier for the goal kicker (in this case himself!) to convert the try worth 5 points by adding an extra 2 points if he makes the field goal attempt Where you place the ball to the ground in the end zone equates to the position that field goal is taken from So the easiest place to set up to kick a goal from scoring a try is in between the posts as it positions the goal kicker dead center Just so you know he wasn't showing off hahaha And yes some people have made some serious mistakes messing around in the end zone it doesn't happen often though but when it does...

the player wearing 10 is the fly-half, he and the 9 (scrum half) dictate the direction of play and are entirely responsible for organising the attack of a team in open play. as the first ones with their hands on the ball they decide if the ball is being run, kicked, or taken back in, they will also give commands for set moves, such as cross-overs, crash balls, and scissors. Crash ball is my favourite move when an attacking team is drifting across the pitch in one direction, and a player catches the ball from a small pop pass running fast against the drift, catching the defenders completely wrong-footed

While touching the ball down anywhere in the "n-zone" counts as a try, the closer you get to the posts, the easier the resulting kick is. That's why you'll see some guys continue to run once they've past the try line. It can be risky though.

Rugby is typically divided in forwards and backs. Forwards typically push the ball forward with big crunching hits while backs typically try to get outside their opposing player or create gaps to run through. But the roles are not fixed. Forwards join the back line to create overlaps, backs get stuck in to crate or cover a ruck or maul. And some of the best moments come from a forward to make an 80 meter dash to score a try.

Good insight for a novice and bummer you haven't gotten more views. Although most people on a highlights vid are after big hits or sidesteps (jukes). With a couple of your questions, the ten isn't the best player on the pitch but is the major decision maker, called fly-half they're basically a rugby quarterback. They drive the team tactically and will usually call set plays off of set piece and will manipulate and organise your attack in open play (which in Rugby is the majority of the game). You've also successfully figured out one of the 2 major differences between rugby and American football. American football people are a cog in a well-oiled machine, extremely specific roles, you do your role and everyone does there's and things pay off. Because Rugby is a game of continuity players have to be multi-skilled and play more heads-up and instinctively reacting as the play unfolds. This is why passing, situational awareness and running lines/support play (along with tackle technique) are so important for every single player regardless of their more specialised position in the team. Also, if you're wanting to check out some juke moves the vid recommended below is pretty good. And Shaun Johnson si a great playmaker in any form of Rugby.

I’m an old geyser and played club rugby in Auckland in the 40s and 50s. I am constantly amazed at the modern game. Especially the All Blacks situational awareness of where the other players are. You see passes today that would have been considered impossible when I played. Passing after the quickest glance and accurate. Living in Canada now I look at the All Blacks play and sometimes think of Gretzky playing hockey. They seem to have such an awareness of where every one is.

After every try comes a conversion. The converting team have a place kick from a position directly opposite where the ball was touched down, so touching the ball down as close to the centre of the posts is optimal. They then have to kick the ball between the uprights and above the crossbar from that point opposite the touchdown.

Hey there. Heads up: the reason the player darts closer to the centre when scoring the try is so that the kicker has a better chance of converting the try. After a try, the place kicker attempts to kick the ball over the posts (with the ball in a static position on the ground) to gain another two additional points. Where the ball is placed is dependent on where the try was dotted down: you draw a straight line from where it was dotted parallel to the touch line. The closer to the posts the ball is dotted, the less of an angle to kick it over.

The numbers they wear is based on what position they play so they don’t get to choose the number they get. That’s also why they don’t have names on their shirt because that number isn’t just there’s. Also the reason they players try and touch the ball down closer to the goal is because that’s where the conversion (kick) will be after so it makes it easier for the kicker for the ball to be more centred with the goal.

@k1w1 the main comment where i state that im proud that we only lost about 60% of the time is actually meant as a joke... South Africans dont really have much pride in rugby anymore... its becoming less of a sport and more of a political debate... white people doesnt get selected for the Springboks because there has to be a certain amount of blacks in the team, which is causing a great divide of supporters of the system and non supporters... but the main problem is the quality of the local derbies, all the talented youngster is going overseas for better pay checks and the rest that is not as good stay behind, and SA rugby is mind fucked with size, everyone has to be big, if damian mckenzie lived in SA he probably wouldnt have seen Superrugby because of his size... we will much rather watch NZ derbies than SA derbies... SA wont be competing with you guys for a long time, your only real competition lies in Europe... So you'll probably win RWC for the 3rd time in a row and 4th overall

So at 2:50, with the numbers, they correlate to the positions. 1-8 are the forwards(think the scrum) 1-5 are the "tight forwards"- the props, hooker and locks, which are the fromt two rows I'm the scrum. 6/7 are flankers. 8 is NO.8(back of scrum) 9-15 are backs. 9- halfback, the guy who feeds into scrum, generally passes from rucks/ breakdowns. 10- first five. Generally the goal kicker, and generally a playmaker. 11/14 are the wings. 12/13 are the centers 15 is the fullback 16-23 are the reserves(numbered in the same general format of the 1-15, with forwards being the lower numbers)

Traditionally the All Blacks have dominated international rugby. They're like the constant... always in the top 2 in the world (and almost always #1). Thankfully, at any given time, there'll usually be one or two of the other nations with a strong enough side to at least keep things vaguely interesting (even if the All Blacks still win most of the time). France in the mid-90s, the Australian side of the late 90s, England in the early 2000s, South Africa about 10 years ago... they all had "a golden generation" that could at least give the All Blacks a half-decent game. As an Irish rugby fan I've been fortunate enough to watch us beat the All Blacks twice in the past 2 years. Bear in mind we've been playing them since 1905 and had never won a match before... so it was pretty big news over here. And with the world cup this year... we're daring to dream. You'll probably lose your money if you bet against the All Blacks though. :-)

The reason why people run in the 'end zone' towards the middle, is a try is 5 points, the conversion is 2 points. However, the conversion takes place 22m from the try line *where you down the ball*. So obviously, scoring under the posts makes the kickers job easier and is better for the team.

The numbers on their shirts actually represent the position they play in rugby. 10 is the Fly half who is basically the major play maker. He also jogged around in the "in-goal" because where you place the ball is directly related to where you have to kick the ball from to convert the try.

@@brandonwatson4820 - Remedial reading classes, followed by some comprehension skills and some humility are what you need Brandon. Let's walk you through this slowly. I'd use crayons and nursery books to help you if I could. OK. NZ (that means New Zealand) are overall (that means considering every factor) the best team in (that means that no team is better) Rugby history (that means that counting backwards from right now all the way back to the first game of Rugby ever played. The key word here is HISTORY). with South Africa (That's a country at the Southern tip of Africa) not far behind (This means they are 2nd). Now, to us people with an IQ higher than 12, which rules you out, this means that in the entire history of International Rugby, the strongest 2 teams overall are NZ & SA. The statistics back this up. The trophy count backs this up. NZ, who are the most dominant team have at least a 70% win record against every team apart from..........................South Africa, which is something like a 57% win record. Therefore, we can deduce from this that if 1 team wins 75% of all of it's matches with everybody else to make them so dominant, but they have a much more even win/loss record against this other team, then that team must surely be at a closer level to them than every other team.

Running around before touching down - the conversion kick is taken in a straight line back from where the ball was touched down (the technical term is grounding btw) so the closer to the goal posts the easier the conversion kick. Congrats on the commentary and trying to understand the game they play in Heaven. 😉

Rugby shirt numbers are positional, meaning the number on your back correlates to the position you play in. Numbers 1-8 are the forwards; 9 & 10 are the half backs and 11-15 are the backs.

The numbers 1 - 15 is usually your first team and each number represents a position. From 16 onwards is the substitution numbers which doesn't matter when it comes to position

The reason they run around behind the try line is you have to kick straight out from where the ball is touched down. So if you have time you want to run to the middle of the field to make your conversion easier. And yes people mess it up.

This has likely been covered already, but the “jukes” are called steps, and when the the player being tackled passes the ball, it’s called an offload. Also, when the ball carrier kicks the ball over the defender it’s a chip kick. Always love seeing new fans of the sport. Keep it up mate!

You are spot on. Each player has individual attributes suited to their position but every man maintains the offensive posture and attack readiness at all times and that is blended into the defensive line. In rugby the team who defends best usually wins. The all blacks are excellent defenders.

The conversion is taken in line with where the try was scored. So scoring closer to the poles means an easier conversion for whoever takes the kick.

Yeah where you ground the try influences where you take the conversion kick from for the extra points. In the middle is a kick right in front of goal, out wide and it's a difficult conversion.

The numbers on there shirts 1-15 are their positions: Forwards (usually the larger and stronger players) 1 loosehead prop 2 hooker 3 tighthead prop 4 & 5 2nd row 6 & 7 flankers 8 usually reffered to as number 8 Backs ( usually smaller, faster and more agile) 9 scrum half 10 fly half ( stand off ) 11 left wing 12 inside centre 13 outside centre 14 right wing 15 full back When the team is defending, the positions dont really matter as long as you have a flat line to prevent the attacking team from breaking through and scoring. When attacking the forwards normally stay close to the ruck and use force to push through the defensive line and the backs spread out and use passing and agility to break the line. Google, rugby union formation, for a reference.
