Since I'm binge watching your reactions to Eurovision right now and noticed a few things, many of which were mentioned in this video, in case it's still unclear, four misconceptions you seem to have: 1. In the early years the songs had to be in the national language. That rule got lifted at some point and nowadays people mostly like to understand the song. But there are way to many languages in europe to know them all and english is known by many. That's why most songs are in english by now. 2. Singers don't have to come from the country nominating them. The nomination process also differs from country to country and from year to year since each country can change that individually. 3. Eurovision is not a singing contest, but a song contest - meaning it's about the songwriters. Obviously though the performance also plays a big role, but that's why the songs are written for Eurovision. 4. At least nowadays (I don't know about the past) they are only allowed 6 people on the stage when performing. So that's why you never see more. Also not to say the old songs were bad or anything, but just a thing to keep in mind: in the beginning there were only a few countries participating (they started with less than 10) and by now it's more than 30. So while winning was still an accomplishment, it was statistically more likely. And the scoring also changed over time. In the beginning it was only one jury. Then one from every country. Then at some point the viewers got to vote and there was no jury. Then they reintroduced the juries alongside the viewers votes to combat political and cultural voting. Also there was a year were there were actually four winners with the same amount of points. For the next year a tie-breaker-rule was introduced. So lots and lots of changes which makes it hard to compare old and new winners and entries. I hope it helps you in the future and sorry for the long comment :)

Yes, Celine Dion is Canadian but that year, the Swiss composer proposed her the song, Celine accepted and represented Switzerland with huge success. We Europeans have known her since 1988. Eurovision helped her make a huge leap in a worldwide career.

It was a songwriter contest. I’m not sure whether the regulations are still the same. However that year in the end Nella Martinetti - the songwriter - was on stage as well after their win. BTW you should see the counting of the votes. The last jury with almost the last vote changed the winner from UK to Switzerland. That was almost unbearable to see - as a Swiss.

Just a note about Jamalas singing: in Eastern European modes, the hierarchies of the notes are not as consistent as the Western scale. The intervals tend to be wide and can change at different points, which we are not used to. As an example, this could mean a song has a wider gap between the second and third notes than in "classic" Western music. These wider gaps in music are generally 1 1/2 times the distance between the notes in a Western European scale, which to us can make the music sound slightly off-key (or just a bit strange).

Sobral was not "putting up a performance", he was not playing a character, he was merely singing the words as beautifully as he could. Now that may look weird to some, but the European public understood it, and most importantly, felt the emotion that he was putting into the song, and that's why he won. If you can't appreciate Sobral's song, then you're just not listening with your ears.

Celine Dion is Canadian but she speaks French and at that point she had a French-language music career. The rules for participation in Eurovision are a little bit vague. There is no rule saying that you have to be from the country you are participating for, sometimes you do not even have to have family or ancestry there to participate for that country. I mean even Johnny Logan was boring in Australia 🇦🇺 but had Irish parents.

Johnny Logan was the Goat... He was every girls dream back then.. Fantastic voice if he was today he would have become super star in seconds...One element i miss in eurivision is the live music and orchestra. Dana International was Transexual the first and only one and won... Conchita wurst is a Drag queen. Salvador was late stage of heart failure and in the waiting list to get a heart... i mean come on girl... Also is kinda an unwritten law if Eurovision that the runner ups are the ones that have the most success and not the winners with the obvious exception of ABBA Jonny Logan and Maneskin.

Eurovision can always be taken seriously, but not always, and that's the fun part of it. The "troll" or even the non-serious songs offer the magic that Eurovision has had over the years. From grandmas baking bread on stage to superhero costumes and singing about a Mongol ruler. However, there is as much fun as there is seriousness, from Political songs about Greece to North Macedonia to Georgia forcing Eurovision to cancel their song from participating due to the title: we love to put-in. That's why I would suggest you to either react to every country (or at least the most successful-consistent ones) in Eurovision (for example Sweden, Ireland, Luxembourg until their withdraw from the contest, Italy, Greece etc), or videos like these for 2nd-5th place- the worst songs of each year, its up to you, even though I'd go with the first one. Keep up the good work!
@VoloxTV
@VoloxTV Жыл бұрын
Even though the more goofy performances aren't generally your favorites, I do think it's great that Eurovision is a platform to just have fun with music, be it whacky or super genuine. I mean, for example, Lordi was very goofy too, but that doesn't mean they weren't good and talented performers deserving of that year's title.

To answer your question on Rise like a phoenix. The singer is not trans. He is a drag queen. His real name is Tom, if I remember correctly, and Conchita Wurst ist just his stage name when he performes in drag. Also I agree with you, Rise like a phoenix is my favorite eurovision song ever :)

Ok last comment, cause I commented a lot haha. Many other people made a big career after Eurovision, not just abba and maneskin. The thing is, if you only consider someone famous if its heard in the US, thats not reality. Euphoria, Heroes, Rise like a phoenix, Arcade... where very famous songs all over Europe and were on the radio tops in so many countries. Also is not just the winners. In my experience, Soldi (2nd place for Italy) and Fuego (2nd place for cyprus) were super hits in my country, Spain, and I know they were in many others too. Also groups like "il volo" (3rd place for italy) are super mega famous in many countries. Maybe not in the US. But really, they are big. If you say they do not have a succesful career... you have to look into it. So, yeah, just keep in mind that not being known in the US does not mean you are not a famous, superstar in so many other countries, and thats what happened with many eurovision artists.

So with the early time the reason they had one mic for the back up singers is because the harmony sounded better at that time budget was also smaller and sometimes the back up singers are not singing live only the main singer, it's obviously not like that anymore..Also that song puppet on a string sung by Sandie Shaw is English its because she has Dagenham accent like majority of the England have accents like Scotland and Wales 😅 Also you only see newer winners because most wasn't part of the early competition and through decades joined competition. Ryan Dolan 2013 for irleand wasn't the best violcalist but stage performance and the reputation was iconic.
