As a Glaswegian I can honestly say I’ve been stuck in a lift with no buttons trying to speak to an American machine and got nowhere I was in the lift for about 10 minutes before somebody came along. As for Alexa I unplugged it around the third time of trying to get it to understand me. For some reason though My tv can understand me figure that one out. I’ve been in London for many years so I know my accent has mellowed unless I am speaking to a fellow Scot. As for Siri that can fuck off as well. all the best. Rab

South Australia here: My girlfriend is from Yorkshire, and I'm of Scots parentage born in SA. Her massive screen smart arse TV has been set to first Australian and later English English. Neither setting understands her. I have to translate so her TV can respond with its bugger all capability. The Irish TV show Mrs Brown's Boys did the same in an episode. Then she sets it to Irish and it answers but says things like "WTF 'r you asking that f'r?! Feck'n fig'r it out f'r y'rself." ... Or words to the effect.

Scots is effectively it's own language. I don't use Scots vernacular when talking to people that won't understand it. I think people don't realise it's more than an accent thing, it's often completely different words. Plus, these "Scottish accent" reactions almost always refer to a really strong Glaswegian accent which is totally different from a eg middle class Edinburgh accent. We don't all talk like pure mad weegies 😜

@@INSA.NEL.Y yup. If you compare a Morningside accent with an English scouse or geordie accent, the Scottish person will be much more understandable to Americans. A lot of these videos ham up how thick Scottish accents are. There definitely are some hard to understand accents in the UK, but they are defined by socio-economic backgrounds more than region, usually.

My Glaswegian accent is not especially strong, but neither my wife nor I could be understood. Her favourite response was, "I don't know that" to almost everything and everything. Alexa was consigned to the dustbin. I know an old lady who has a voice-activated tv and she told me it didn't work. She wanted to watch BBC One Scotland. What the tv heard was BBC Wan (phonetically that is how many people in my part of Scotland would say One). Hysterical 😅

real Scot here and yes, we have so many different dialects here that still any closed captions / subs cannot get a Scots accent right, unless its also following queens english rules and also slows down too. We have Scots, Scottish Gaelic and Doric but many many other dialects in between too. For example, i live near Perth, yet i have trouble understanding broad Dundonian, which is basically only 15 miles from me, and Doric is sometimes quite difficult for me too. And its not just accents but words too. In my town we something good is Doss, whereas just down the road in Fife the same word means something shit. I call a child a 'bairn' whereas other Scots call a child a 'wean' .... You'll never hear of a bairn named 'Wayne' in Glasgow hehe.. I'm Scottish and moved to America about 9 years ago. I couldn't do drive thru's, phone orders, or anything voice activated for years. Now I just use an American accent, but I still refuse to go through a drive thru because I never get what I fuckin ordered. EVER!!!

I was watching this reaction and I could suddenly hear music playing, so I paused the video and I could still hear music playing... it was 'Something's cooking in my kitchen by Fucking Dana... My Alexa must have understood her when she said it with an Australian accent (there is no way her English accent sounded English) 😂

I appreciate the presence of the methadone cup as a charming addition to a home.

The lyrics refer to a "ten star blue plate special". Maybe Dana's first career was a methamphetamine cook and an inspiration to this woman.

She sounds like she’s saying Donna! It’s the same with my Yorkshire accent.

She obviously wanted to listen to it while cooking, but if someone said they were gonna cook for me but started making tiktoks about alexa instead I'd probably say "put the f-ing dinner on" as well.
