American Reacts to American vs European Football Fans
In this video I react to video evidence of the difference in the chants and atmosphere created by American and European Football Fans.
From the chants to the tribalistic and rambunctious nature of the fandoms, there is a clear difference between American and European fans.

European football is tribal, based on years of working class history. People travel home and away, all over the world to support their team. When I was in the US, football fans are very middle class and only go to home matches. They don’t travel inter-state never mind outer-state bar the occasional handful This is the problem with “franchise” teams. They have little or no history, this they can have no heart.

Not only are European fans more passionate, I think in general, their bond to their local club has a far longer history often reaching back to over a hundred years, from father to son. In the US teams move around the country and change their names as they please.

American College sports are closer to this, with history back to the 1800s and great loyalty to one's Alma Mater. Also, the student sections approximate the supporters sections and, obviously, the college don't move around like pro franchises. European crowds are still at another order of magnitude above American college crowds in terms of enthusiasm, however. (In terms of attendance, there are now 7-8 teams that average over 100,000/game and a bunch that average over 80,000/game)

This is why when the American owners of English football clubs had no clue about the backlash that would come when forming the US model of a league in Europe. They are and were clueless about the passion and culture of football in Europe. Soon as the backlash from fans of the six English clubs started the concept was dead within three days. Wealthy owners who do not understand the game and in it for one reason... money and greed!

I think what sets them apart the most is the fact that American fans not only start after the announcer but they seem to go off a song that’s already known and then just say “Oh Ohhhh Oh” in rhythm of the song. European fans start whenever they feel like and every team has 15+ chants with actual lyrics that are specific to their own team, which is most likely made by fans and carried through 50+ years There’s levels to this

One thing I've always noticed in these videos is that the US fans usually have some sort of soundtrack or backing music playing in order for the chant to stay in unison, in Europe we kind of make the atmosphere on our own without the need of someone playing music through a set of speakers. Biased of course, but I do prefer the natural atmosphere we create here over the forced atmosphere that seemed to be in the US examples, both still cool to watch though :)

I think the intensity is based on history. The football teams are generally quite old. My team Everton were set up in 1878. The came out of a church team. It means that they are institutions rooted in and named after the communities where they’re based. Owners can’t just up and move them to another city. It was attempted in the past but the resultant clubs become pariahs. Because the clubs are tied to the towns and cities they’re in the fans have fairly undying loyalty and dogmatic passion. There is no franchise system here, teams my get nicknames but they will always be know by the town they’re in Watford Fc is often known as the Hornets, but that’s an organic thing that’s arisen from the colour of the strip not from marketing, it wasn’t a franchise name applied to them.

In the US the music is piped in, the fans then sing, 'la, la, la,' the club controls the fans as the club picks the music, there is no history or passion. In Europe the fans sing their own songs, the club does not control them, they have passion and they are a law unto themselves.

In my country (Portugal), there are always fights after the matches. Cars get smashed, windows get broken, sometimes people get stabbed. I have been in American stadions and I can tell from my own experience, that it looks more like a nice meeting where they sing their songs. Outside North America, it is completely different. Eu but also South America is so much different. You feel the passion and it makes a very big impression. try to get the video of the national hymn of scotland for a rugby game in edinbourgh, or the english fan singing sweet chariot in twickenham, la marseillaise in Paris stade de fance, the Irish atnthems in Thomond Park or the welsh anthem in a close Millenium stadium in Cardiff. quite impressive. For football, the south brasillains are also quite crazy when it starts.

For some context. The first European fans are from Stuttgart. That's no party for getting some championship it's almost normal for the home game. They party all way from the train station to the stadium. And for another context they are playing in 2. Bundesliga so not like they are the top of the top there.

I think college has the more dedicated fans because it's closer to how sports work in Europe, and much of the world: teams don't move, they're not franchises that pick up and relocate if they think there's a better market for their brand elsewhere in the country. They have been part of their communities for over 100 years in many cases - plus there's more teams, and more importantly more teams in one city. So you don't get situations like the NFL were there can be several *states* surrounding an NFL team that largely support said team (like Seattle in the whole PNW for example) but instead you get the likes of Liverpool and Everton; it makes the rivalries and support all that more intense

Look up some footage of AFC Ajax...Museumplein 2019 Amsterdam. Standing there surrounded by 100K+ celebrating their phenomanal year!!! Now that's chanting for 4 hours straight waiting for the players to come!! Nothing like it. In the stadium the crowd is always chanting, lead by the boys from F-Side. In case you didn't guess..AJACIED 4 Ever!!!

Most places in England are within reasonable travelling distance of a Premiership or Championship football team and a dedicated fans can easily attend all the home games. Contrast that with large swathes of the US where top pro sports teams can only be followed on TV. I think that allows the fan base to feel more connected to the team, and more passionate.

in my city (Glasgow) there's parts of the city that's a no-go zone for supporters of the biggest clubs in the city Celtic & Rangers in fact there's pubs that don't hide the fact of were they're allegiance lies by having the colours of the team on the outside either by flying the Irish tri-colour or the union jack or just by the name of pubs you know not to go into /near if you don't support the club

those magnesium-torches are actually quite an issue, causing a lot of dispute between football officials and hardcore-fans (e.g. ultras)... ultras argue that they are essential to their choreographies and for intensifying the atmosphere in the stadium... officials are opposed to those torches, since they are just dangerous with temperatures reaching up to 2500°C...
