The 79 series cruisers are bloddy expensive for what they are. So yeah, solid axles front and rear, v8 turbo diesil, but super basic inside and look like something from the 70s. You can still buy them new though though. They have a reputation for being rugged and reliable, and even without lift kits etc they are very capable off road.

A few kilometres south of there is a place called Mudlo rocks. It has claimed/killed more 4x4s then anywhere else in Australia. Basically you have to drive around the rocks at low tide and if you get stuck the incoming tide will drown your vehicle. Inskip point is where you go to catch the ferry to Fraser Island. Where they're filming is only a short distance from the sealed road, so many people take the lazy option and figure they'll drive onto the ferry and let their tyres down on the way over, which is why so many get stuck here, because they're still running road pressure.

Inskip Point is a Queensland camping staple. There is a giant sinkhole there now. This place is considered the gateway to the Fraser Coast. Not far from here is a car ferry that takes you to the lower end of Fraser Island, the largest sand island on the planet. It has a beach that you can drive on, 120 kilometres long (75miles) and has traffic lights for aeroplane landings.

its usually a bad idea to disconnect the trailer. whatever you hook to it can't get a run up to get it moving. it's easier to get a vehicle and trailer moving with a snatch from another vehicle. they needed to get the 79 series out of the way and hook literally any other 4wd there to it. all the 79 did was bury itself and make ruts large enough for the other vehicle to stay continually bottomed out.

We have basically three sets of Land cruisers here in Australia - for a long time. Heavy duty basic farm/mining land cruisers as in the video, with a turbo diesel V8, possible other engines and in different configurations. Very, very expensive, but last and have often the BEST resale. Then you have the less hardcore every day family land cruiser wagon. Also expensive, to the point that people switched to the Nissan patrol and some people were buying the latest land cruiser just to make a profit, because they could sell them straight away at more than they bought them, because of low supply, long delivery time, COVID-19, huge demand - and people would pay the price. Australia is the world's biggest market for Land cruisers, with I think some Australian input. All through the outback and mining and farms and parks and wildlife service and SES, Police, remote ambulances and fire trucks as well. The third is the Prado Basically a smaller brother to the land cruiser. ( the Hilux is in the smaller UTE category, and we have had the Surf and four runner before. I think the Fortuner, is a wagon version of the Hilux ? ) The Hilux is the best selling "vehicle" in Australia, often swapping back and fourth, monthly with the Ford Ranger. The market has changed dramatically since the ending of local manufacturing, when it was basically between Commodore and Falcon and earlier, between Falcon and Kingswood.

Most of the issues with drivers is that they don't air-down. Another cause is that they are way overloaded towing way overloaded trailers. Back in 1980 I drove a 2wd Holden Sandman panel van onto Rainbow Beach after seeing dozens of 2wd vehicles driving onto the beach. We asked them all, as they were airing down or airing up, why they weren't getting bogged down and they all gave the same answer. We then headed up the beach as far as we could go where I got bogged as the soft sand hit the bottom of the chassis. Luck would have it that a VW Beetle turned up with a bloke and his 4 girlfriends who helped push us onto the harder sand and we turned around and headed back. The trickiest part was the deep soft sand entry to the beach not unlike the sand there at Inskip but with the lowered air pressure and picking a good line so as to avoid the chassis bogging us got us through. Tyre pressure management is the key to not joining the mobs of clueless idiots like the ones who bog down at Inskip.

No more than 15psi in super soft sand, they need to look half flat to work. Always take a little 12 volt pump with you to pump them back up before you head down the highway.

True story, First time to Frasier Island, @ Inskip point I drive off the tarmac carpark onto the very deeply rutted sand. zot, straight down to the axles bogged with a fully loaded camper trailer on the back, um, you twit, forgot to air down. As I am airing down, man comes over and say's the obvious, "you look a bit stuck". My reply as I shove maxtrax under all four wheel's, locker s on and drive out. No mate just forgot to air down. He looked more deflated than my tyres ^^

That is a 79 series Toyota Landcruiser (I may be wrong but I think that's the V8 Diesel version). Also in AUS we call those tray style Utes tray backs and you'll never guess what the tubs are called.. style sides.

I didn't but I came really really close, I drove down a sand track that had two nice hard compacted sand wheel tracks in my front wheel drive hatchback, then it opened out and I could see the beach, so I decided not to keep going, (I only have 142mm of ground clearance so I figured I shouldn't attempt the beach), I reversed up a bit found a clearing off to the side of the track, put the back wheels in the clearing (this was a good call the clearing had soft sand) then as i tried to go forwards in the other direction my front wheels got stuck in the soft sand in the middle of the track. luckily it was a weekday and no traffic, so I sat a few minutes and thought what I should do, my hatchback had traction control and is diesel so I just accelerated very gently in second gear and let the traction control do it's thing, it worked, in hind sight i should have let the tire pressure down, but technology saved me 👍🏼

@@daveamies5031 I had a 95 Landrover Discovery fully kitted out but I was like the guy here. I was towing a large heavy camper trailer. I did everything right with tyre pressure and whatnot I just got momentarily off line and that was it. Winched myself out.

Yeah that’s a GXL Toyota Landcruiser 4.5 litre V8 turbo diesel 151kw 430 nm (202 hp and 317 lb ft) commonly manual transmission with a drop side tray back single cab and they mostly are duel cab with the drop side tray back. They’re an evolution of the 1970’s called the 70 series keeping the shape of the 1970’s model but with gradual improvements along the way and a 25 year life span instead of 10 years for most vehicles. If you were to get them in America it would be between $50,000 and $150,000 USD

If it was anything other than a Toyota they would be picking up bits of driveline shrapnel all over the beach! The 79 series land cruiser may be initially expensive but what some people don’t factor in apart from its reliability of course is if you look after the vehicle when it comes time to sell (why would you want to) it’s resale value is one of the best in Australia and this is where you cash in because these things used bring a bloody good dollar on the used market far better than any other brand
