the grenfell thing goes even deeper. It wasn't just "not well maintained". Because, as you say, it was a poor area surrounded by wealthier areas, they put cladding on the outside of the tower block to try and make it look nicer for the wealthy people who had to look at it. This cladding was EXTREMELY flamable. They also failed to tell the fire department about it, so when it inevitably caught fire they just told people to stay in their flats, which would be the protocol in a regular building, but with this cladding on the side it just cooked all these people alive.

THROW EVERYONE INVOLVED IN JAIL!! Wtf?! Oh my God! That is horrendous. Those poor victims and their families 😭 I hope their rich neighbors feel like 💩 don't want to look at how the lower class are living? We have a block of flats in my town (uk) with the same dangerous cladding. The residents cant sale their homes to move out into safer housing and the company and council are still arguing over how to remove it. While this is all happening they have a 24/7 fire security patrol unit. I would be incredibly scared to even sleep in that block. This is not uncommon across the UK at the moment. We arnt a rich town or the surrounding area. Its a time bomb waiting to go off.

@@Favourreacts That's not just it though, they have also neglected those people who's family members were murdered and those who were displaced and made homeless, many never received sufficient aid or compensation and were forgotten like they were trying to brush the whole thing under the carpet, that's why people such as Dave still bring it up and also Stormzy in his amazing BRITS performance from 2018. It was corner cutting by councils as the cladding was low cost but was vitally flawed, many other buildings have the same cladding still and it hasn't been replaced. It was a truly horrific event as people inside were so helpless some started throwing their babies and children off balconies for people on the ground to try and catch.

itsPat that’s not just it though, hundreds of residents were undocumented immigrants who were never counted in the official death toll because there were no records of them living there, but the survivors recognise that the population of Grenfell was much higher than the media reported.

Steph i live in a block that has this and for a year after Grenfell they said our cladding was ok, then we got letters saying it was flammable after a year of investigation, we now have around the clock fire Marshall’s. It’s such a scary thought to think one night we may not get out. Not to mention I live quite near to the Grenfell Tower area, I remember seeing it on fire on my way to work, then finding out we lost a member of the choir I used to be a part of to it, then seeing people I know who lost family members and friends, the kids group that used to come to my work(kids entertainment place) had lost kids and families to that fire. The worst thing is there are still families displaced from Grenfell!

A little bit more info for you guys: Our nurses are living on donations from food banks. Our government spends more money on bombs for Saudi Arabia than they spend on the National healthcare services. Austerity has seen money taken from budgets such as free school meals, NHS, Housing services etc being redirected toward government pay rises. The year our emergency services dealt with three terror attacks and grenfell our emergency services were denied a pay rise whilst our politicians were given a 1% raise. The NHS is the system in place to ensure that everyone regardless of economic status will receive healthcare.

Question Time is actually a real event every Wednesday where the prime minister is asked questions by Members of Parliament (mps). Also our NHS is the National Health Service so all of our medical stuff is under them. The NHS has been around since after the Second World War and in the last decade or so it’s really been struggling with funding. I keep editing my comment when I’m watching the video 😭. The little character you saw I’m pretty sure was supposed to be Theresa May our old prime minister. The main reason why grenfell was so disastrous was because of the cheap flammable cladding that was placed on the outside of the building to make it look “nicer”. After the fire loads of buildings all across the country had to have the cladding removed. Charlie Hebdo is a french magazine they make political cartoons and comics and are very left wing. The head office was attacked by two shooters in 2015, 12 people were killed. Grenfell was horrible, you could hear kids screaming and saw people jumping just trying to escape. Also Grenfell wasn’t a terror incident but the London Bridge Attack was. I hope this answered some of your questions !!

so a big issue in Brexit was that they promised that if we left we would have an extra 350 million euros that we would stop giving to the EU, and instead could give it to the NHS (our national health service), and so people voted leave, and then literally the next day they were like "lol yeah no we never said that we would give the money to the NHS...". People will argue about NHS funding, i have worked in the NHS for my entire life. I have a Masters degree and yet I earn about £20k a year (whats that, like $30k?), I have worked on various wards and in different services and its getting worse and worse, they are literally strangling the entire health service so that they can try and justify privatising it and having a model mire similar to american health care with health insurance, where if you are poor you just die. There's a lyric from a UK band which i think sums this up the best: "illness is not an indulgence you should have to pay for, nor is it a crime for which you should be punished". I FIRMLY believe that health care is a basic right that should be free to everyone at the point of access. The fact that the gouvernment seem to be doing their best to destroy that completely kill me.

‼️‼️PLEASE READ IT ALL‼️‼️ It’s grenfell by the way 🤣 David Cameron was our previous prime minister before thereasa may who made an election and said that if we voted to leave he would resign making Theresa our prime minister but if we voted to stay in the eu he would still be our prime minister the uk voted for us to leave the eu forcing him to resign nobody liked David or not many so that’s why the general public saw this as an opportunity to get a new prime minister but it meant that we were forced to leave the eu which the government didn’t want and they truly believed we wouldn’t vote him out of office but of course he was hated so he kinda screwed himself over believing we would care more about leaving than him resigning,so that’s why we have left the eu ,well in the process of leaving. Also the uk is the same when you were saying the us promised u benefits but haven’t received them for being essential workers. It’s the exact same over here both my parent are nhs nurses, constantly facing corona. The Conservative party (the party of the prime minster who are in office ) ( boris)were debating weather nhs workers should received a pay bonus, before the corona , they cheered when nhs workers did not received a pay bonus. Then when Boris became ill with the virus they thanked the key workers , asked retired nhs workers to start work because it was too much for the nhs, promised us a pay bonus because of our hard work , clapped every week , when Boris became better nhs did not receive a pay increase rather just some continued clapping. The general public are constantly arguing that there should be a increase in money given to the nhs by the government, complaining when they become ill and there is no beds and not enough workers to care for them. But what people don’t realise is that the government are increase the price of uni cost for nurses which doesn’t help the case of not having enough nurses. When people complain about waiting times people don’t realise that hospitals aren’t big enough and no money from government is supporting them to increase facilities it isn’t going to worthy cause tons of money from the government to support Brexit could of been used by the nhs. So when Boris became Ill they cared so much about our nhs but now it’s back to normal now he’s well 🤷🏼‍♀️the government don’t support our nhs they just don’t and complain that it’s going to brake. Just a reminder the nhs anniversary of 72 years is on Sunday oh and guess what the government will be out clapping with the rest of the general public but they can’t support us with the money given the workers higher pay and lower education cost oh no that would be too much to ask 😤🙄sorry for the rant xx

I agree with most of this comment but the first paragraph isnt that correct, the EU referendum wasnt offered by Cameron as way of getting a new PM. The referendum was offered as a Conservative Party policy in the lead up to the 2015 General election, because the right wing aspects of the public were becoming more euroskeptic and the Conservatives were losing voters to parties like UKIP, Cameron won that 2015 Election and so the EU referndum would be held, it didnt force him to resign but Cameron was strongly remain and campained for it, remain lost and he resigend as he didnt want to lead the country through something he strongly disagreed with. Also not many people voted for Brexit to get rid of David Cameron, one as no one knew who would replace him and two because as conservatives go he wasnt that strongly hated. ukandeu.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/CSI-Brexit-4-People%E2%80%99s-Stated-Reasons-for-Voting-Leave.pdf (more popular reasons were to have stronger controls on borders, get back control of UK laws, and to reduce money being sent to Brussels, I dont think they are good reasons personally) Dave says in this "politicians are all addicts in a game but its peoples lives that youre playing with" essentially David Cameron rolled the dice with the quality of life of Brits just to try and make his political position stronger

Great reaction again! Here are some of the answers to your questions during the review: Question Time is a play on the name of a political show here in the uk on the BBC. Members of the audience get to ask members of Parliament and on rare occasions the prime minister questions. At the time of the song the prime minister was Theresa May(conservative) replaced by Boris Johnson late last year. The main opposition party is Labour and at the time was lead by Jeremy Corbyn he has now been replaced by Sir Kier starmer. As you said the royals have no dealings in the government or any running of the country they are just the figure head of the UK . They justify their positions by saying they bring in tourists and are great ambassadors around the world. Grenfell Tower wasn’t anything to do with jack Merritts death. Jack died in a “terrorist” attack and the Grenfell tower fire was down to government/council negligence. They authorised cladding on the outside of the buildings that was flammable this was to save money as a result the official death toll was 77 I think however it is believed the number is much higher. It took the government a long time before they even attended the scene to offer condolences. There are still hundreds of tower blocks in the uk that have the flammable cladding people are going to bed wondering if it is there time to die in a fire the government haven’t implemented a coherent plan to deal with it. The NHS is our national health service it runs our hospitals and doctor surgeries all funded through our taxation. To get us to vote to leave the EU elements of the government promised that by leaving that the 350 million sent to the Eu each week for membership would be spent on the NHS. Since we have left the EU the NHS hasn’t seen the money.

Just to clarify on the NHS part, as a fellow American it may be difficult to comprehend this but the NHS is the UK's National Health Service. Although the UK has been slowly privatizing portions of it over the years the vast majority of their healthcare system is not just a single-payer [i.e. like Canada or Bernie's proposed Medicare-for-All plan,] but it is actually the government that owns/runs it [i.e. our VA system for vets.] So, they own most of the hospitals, the doctors, nurses, etc... are government employees. This also explains an earlier line you talked about where he says "I just find it f-cked that the government is struggling to care for a person that cares for a person." Since the NHS nurses are government employees the government sets the salaries & what not. Also, to people from the UK who see this I understand that the above picture leaves out various caveats & nuance.

Grenfell; partially correct. The government permitted the use of cheaper cladding on the building but corners were cut and it didn't fit fire safety standards (all to save a fractional amount). When the blaze started the tower was entirely engulfed because of the cladding. To top it off, fire service radios didn't work and so people were told to stay put and wait for rescue rather than evacuate. They died. Within weeks hundreds of buildings around London alone were bare after the cladding had to be removed from every other building in the country which they had been installed on.

This is Britain - We have a long history. One of invasion, feudalism, oppression, revolt, civil war, regicide, war, slavery, industrialisation, Empire-building, more war and more war. The last war, almost destroyed us. The Empire dissolved. BUT, from all of those ashes a phoenix rose - The people of Britain: Universal suffrage, education, housing, The NHS, better working conditions, sick pay, week-ends, holidays with pay, social security - because people were entitled to work and if they couldn't find it, that was their government's fault! Instead of an Empire, we had a Commonwealth of Nations ready to back us, and their people came here to work with us. From a bankrupt nation we became, once again, one of the richest countries on earth. As far as the European Union is concerned - they're following practices from the book that WE wrote and any extra chapters were edited by us! BUT, the rich and powerful are back in business, no longer fearful of revolution - Boris Johnson, with his lineage of aristocracy, royalty and privilege, wants to go back to 'The Good Old Days'. Well, Boris, we might have had an Empire on which the sun never set, but my Scottish ancestors were being thrown off their land, during the Highland Clearances to make way for sheep; my Irish ancestors were starving (half of them ended up in America) and my English ancestors were in the army, fighting for The Empire, but actually only joining up because they knew they would get to eat! Judge a country by how it treats its poor. When it came to that, we used to be the greatest country on earth. It didn't last long.

"350m we give to the EU every week that our health service needs" was referencing a lie that Boris told. He said if we voted Leave (Brexit) that all this money could go to the NHS but he made up the figures just to so he could get what he wanted. when he got found out, the matter had to be settled in the highest court in the country, but of course nothing came of it (just like all the MPs who were renting out flats to people in buildings like Grenfell didn't get in any trouble for blocking all the reports the Labour Party, their opposition, tried to put through parliament warning about the dangers of the cladding). Boris didn't care about how close the NHS is to going under until he got corona.

Basically Grenfell towers is what you call the projects and the area was being gentrified. So they decided to buy some new cladding on the building to make it look nicer but it wasn’t fireproof. So it caught fire and 72 people died and allegedly more but we’ll never know. There was a deadline too to sort out other buildings with the same cladding but they missed the deadline a few weeks ago meaning there’s buildings out there with the same cladding as Grenfell. Flats literally catch fire in England and Scotland every few weeks

Grenfell was a tower block of council flats (subsided housing to support the less advantageous community). In 2017 it caught fire and it took 15 minutes for a 24 flight tower to completely catch fire and turn into a blazing inferno. Upon investigation it was found that the reason was because the building company was given permission to use a cheaper cladding (a type of material used on the outside of the building) which was flammable. And like you said the government/council response was outrageous and basically took no responsibility and also provided very little support to the survivors. It was the community that came together to care for the survivors with volunteers and donations helping the victims. 3 years later grenfell survivors are still living in temporary accommodation/hotel and have not been rehoused. Grenfell is in/near an affluent area (near notting hill, down the road from Hyde park/oxford street etc), so loads of theories came out about the government involvement - intentional, or took advantage of the situation to kick out the ‘ lower class’ of people they don’t want there

Grenfell was a block of flats wrapped in cladding that was known to be illegal but was signed off anyway. He residents had reported many fire safety hazards and were ignored. The block of flats (appartments) caught fire and the residents were told to stay put so many were burned alive children included. When it came to light that the government had known the cladding was illegal and still signed off on it people wanted justice but noting has been done even now. There are still people missing today. And there are still people who are living in hotels.

Grenfell was a public housing building in a relatively posh part of London. The lady in the paper was Theresa May, the UK’s new Prime Minister in 2017 (she lost her job over Brexit) and Boris became PM. So the make the Grenfell building less ugly, it was covered up with highly inflammable covering (cladding). A fridge caught fire, and it spread rapidly and burnt the entire building with so many people dead. It’s led to a national scandal we investigated and found thousands of buildings with highly inflammable cladding. So we have thousands of people still living in dangerous buildings.

Girl react to Dave Hangman! It’s less political but he touches cancel culture. Just the whole Game over ep bangs e.g no words. Also Rashan Charles and Edson da Costa were victims of police brutality and were both murdered during police restraint. Police don’t have guns here so lots (mainly white) people don’t think police brutality is a problem here but they still have that implicit bias towards black people making them 28 more likely to be stop and searched. They tend to also be very aggressive as well, in our recent BLM protests they brought horses which they road through the crowd, one even losing control and running rampant. The media then had the audacity to blame it on the protestors 🤦🏾‍♀️

Just a note about the title of the song. It is referring to a very important BBC news programme shown in the evenings. The show travels around the UK and takes the form of a panel debate in front of a live audience. It used to be just about politics, but the production duties fell into the hands of a private media company who chase ratings by filling the audience with actors playing "far-right" characters.

Question Time is a popular debate show on the BBC where our politicians show up to take questions the public who are in the audience. It's a essentially a US style town hall, except it's on every week throughout the year and not just during the election cycle. I could be wrong, but as far as I know, actual prime ministers have never appeared on the show while they're the prime minister. We usually get our version of senators and congressmen/women. So Boris Johnson has appeared on it multiple times but never while he's been the prime minister. David Cameron, the old prime minister, called for a referendum on Britain's EU membership. He campaigned for us to remain in the EU, and he obviously lost. The day after the EU vote was revealed, he called for a press conference and resigned. So then, as the country was walking towards truly uncertain times (we've been an EU member since 70's), the conservative party held a quick vote on who should replace him. Theresa May won that vote and was then tasked with the duty of negotiating with the EU on the terms of the divorce. It didn't end well for her either as she struggled and she held her own press conference to announce her resignation in 2019. This is where Boris Johnson comes in and assumes power. Oh yeah, Charlie Hebdo is a satire cartoonist magazine from Paris that made gobal headlines when they were the victims of a terrorist attack because they drew a very unflattering picture of the islamic prophet. This happened in 2014 or 2015 I believe.

So yeah, some background contexts on this one (three months late!) The Prime Minister he's mainly addressing in this is Theresa May, who succeeded David Cameron, but came before Boris Johnson. They're all Conservative Party leaders. The Brexit context is quite nuanced and complicated. Basically the UK, as an EU member, used to pay in £350 million to the EU every week. All countries pay into this EU pot, and then the money is redistributed by the EU Parliament (elected by EU citizens through elections). So for example, every country pays in a proportionate sum, the EU then organises how the total gets spent between everyone. The UK was a net benefactor, meaning it technically got more back than it used to pay in. So that money might get spent on healthcare schemes, or environmental schemes, or security policies and so on. The UK received these benefits in return for its £350m weekly investment - along with the perks of frictionless trade between EU countries, equal access to every trade arrangement within Europe, tariff free trade (so goods don't cost money to transport across borders), free movement for all EU citizens (no visas required to visit, work, or live in any EU country). The UK was a net benefactor of the EU, meaning it technically got much more out than it paid in. It also had more 'opt outs' than any other European country - opt outs being rules that the UK alone didn't have to follow, as it had an exemption made. Whether or not people individually agree, the argument made here by Dave is pretty much that as an EU member, the UK was a powerful country that had a very privileged position that helped the poorest and most vulnerable in the country. His anger is with the Conservative Party, who firstly staged the irresponsible referendum in the first place (as you can tell, Brexit is a very complicated issue, and reducing it to a simple binary question is why the UK has basically imploded over it), and since having to commit to leaving the EU after the result, has lied constantly about how the EU works and how UK money is spent within it - mostly so that they can try and sell leaving the EU as a good thing, to save their reputation. Boris Johnson, before becoming Prime Minister, now infamously rode around on a bus that had a big sign on the side that read 'We pay £350m into the EU every week. Let's use it to fund our NHS (National Health Service) instead'. This caused endless controversy, as it firstly ignored that that £350m covered so many perks that were now going to be gone - and that the UK would actually now have to spend much more than that running the substitutes for those perks already. So there is no extra £350m waiting to be spent as it is. It was an empty promise based on yet more lies, and since leaving the EU, the UK unsurprisingly hasn't been spending that extra money on the NHS. In fact before even Covid-19 came along, the NHS was in endless trouble due to lack of funds, and as a result of Brexit creating new hurdles for migrant workers, it was also facing dangerous staff shortages (in 2017, there was an annual decline of 97% in the number of applications to work in the NHS from EU migrant staff). So yeah, Dave's anger is with the government for the lies they've told over Brexit, how it in fact leaves the country in a very risky position, and even poorer than before. He's annoyed that sectors like healthcare will struggle immensely. Healthcare matters massively in the UK, as by the very name 'NHS', it's been nationalised. This means that healthcare in the UK is largely free at the point of use. It's paid for through taxes, and anyone is allowed to make use of it - you don't pay health insurance in the UK. You only pay for prescriptions if you live in England and are employed. You have to pay for dental treatment, but even this is largely subsidised, and much is offered for free to low earners and the unemployed. Dave, like many Brits, values this - and worries Brexit, and the disaster capitalist Conservatives will result in the health system being eroded to something more like the US system - which is perceived largely to be inferior in terms of its accessibility. Hope this was helpful in some small way :)

Okay so Fraser T smith is the one that produced Dave and Stormzy’s album and also Adele’s. He is also the voice in Dave’s song psycho and plays his therapist. He is incredible. NHS is our national health service. It is what allows us to all have free healthcare. When the EU referendum was happening in the UK. The leave campaign LIED through their teeth and had false adverts everywhere saying we (the UK) we’re giving the EU 350 million pounds a week and as the NHS is underfunded and a national treasure, they manipulated the ignorant voter to making a decisions based off this. Obviously when we did vote leave, this £350million to the NHS never happened and people feel like if this wasn’t made into such a massive thing, we would not have voted leave. The leave campaign lied and the rest of the UK was pretty much anti london at this point as they see us as the snobby elitist people who think we are better than the rest of the country and maybe we are because are are more liberal and open :D
