The doors of the Oosterscheldekering will close when the predicted sealevel rises above 10ft/3m of the "normal" sealevel at hightide. It has nothing to do with de "Zuiderzee/IJsselmeer which is in the northern part of the Netherlands. The Oosterschelde is in the southwest. (check the map) And btw "Kering" means "barrier".

I think the biggest misunderstanding is what exactly is Delta works and what is land reclamation. The Delta works are purely defensive against the rivers and the sea. They are still ongoing and will be ongoing forever more until we either lose or the climate will change to cold again. The land reclamation has NOTHING to do with the delta works. Land reclamation has been ongoing since the year 900 and serves agriculture mostly (some cities emerged in those lands, like Amsterdam Gouda and Rotterdam later, but that was not the aim). The land reclamation was started by munks. That is very hard labour. That is why we still call tedious labour "monnikenwerk" (Munks work) in Dutch.
@81MHT
@81MHT 2 жыл бұрын
Think 'Monnikenwerk' has more to do with copying books and illustrations before the printing press was invented. Which they used to do in monasteries.
@evee_peavey
@evee_peavey 2 жыл бұрын
@@81MHT on the nose.. 'monnikenwerk' refers to the intricately drawn opening letters in the books before printing... They all needed to be written by hand and was predominantly done by the church, eg the monks... It would take them months to make one book. A metric ton of drawing and meticulous writing, if a mistake was made the page had to be thrown out and they had to start all over again.

Fair point abt the long history of land reclamation here. Modern, i.e. recent land reclamation also had a little some to do with defending against the sea. Actually, the largest land reclamation project called "Plan Lely", which Charlie did a video on, had a lot to do with safety. That's why the whole project started with the Wieringermeer/Afsluitdijk, to protect against Zuiderzee floods.

@@evee_peavey Well, I searched in the Dutch etymologybank and found: monnikenwerk [moeitevolle arbeid die niets oplevert] {muncks werck 1599, monnikenwerk 1786} is gebaseerd op de idee dat monniken moeten werken om de ledigheid te vermijden, al zouden zij ook vandaag moeten vernietigen wat zij gisteren hebben gemaakt. So in essence it says that "monnikenwerk" is work that does not yield much profit. It can be books, or making marshes ripe for agriculture, or anything else tedious.

The greatest achievement of the Delta works was that it was a generational project, it took decades to complete and was part of a vision that tried to protect the country against the risks 50-100 years into the future instead of 3-4 years. As a Dutchie it's one of the things about my tiny country that I'm sincerely proud of. The struggle against the sea is part of our heritage, and the Delta Works are a monument to that never ending battle.

To add on to the original commentor to explain what is said in the video. 3 meters above the REGULAR sea level.. it is open at all times unless during a storm the water levels rise to the point of more than 3 meters obeve the regular sea level teh wil automticly close. I asume the wil open automticly again when the water level is again down to less than 3 meters above teh regular sea levels. (or the might stay closed until the regular sea level, since why not as the energy/power is spend to close them, I dont know for a fact, just thinking out loud on last part)

09:40 This is indeed a picture of Flevoland and has nothing to do with the Deltaworks. 15:15 North Holland exists for a larger part of polders. These are polders made far earlier then the Zuiderzeepolders. The first larger one: the "Beemster", for instance became dry in 1612 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beemster ). These polders were not created by (re)claiming parts of the sea, but by draining lakes and swamps, etc. But because of ongoing storms and flooding they lost more land around the Zuiderzee than they gained in Holland. South Holland also partly exists of polders; Schiphol Airport for instance is in the largest one of these: the "Haarlemmermeer" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haarlemmermeer ). 21:20 These are pictures of the Oosterscheldekering and so have nothing to do with the Zuiderzeeworks. 22:50 Lelystad is indeed not the largest city in Flevoland, that is the newer "Almere"; it has 217.000+ inhabitants whereas Lelystad has 80.000+.

We Dutch are somewhat overconfident ;) When there is a technical challenge we take it on. In case of the Delta Works there was no solution available for the "once in a hundred year storm". Therefore the engineers got to work and within a period of about 25 years they constructed a series of coastal defences never seen before. And the cost price was obviously astronomical but the solutions were actually very economical. Only use the amount of material you need and construct everything in a clever and efficient way. It is an amazing series of constructions that are worth visiting.

English is a West Germanic language that originated from Anglo-Frisian languages brought to Britain in the mid 5th to 7th centuries AD by Anglo-Saxon migrants from what is now northwest Germany, southern Denmark and the Netherlands. The Anglo-Saxons settled in the British Isles from the mid-5th century and came to dominate the bulk of southern Great Britain.

I'm from the Netherlands, I did a project with my local museum where I played a nun in a video about the flood of 1926. This nun was a real historic person who had kept a diary during the time of that flood and reading the text she wrote down in there (which I had to say in the video) really chilled me to the bone. It gave me a whole new level of respect for the water and the feats of engineering that go into protecting us. And honestly this was a relatively unknown and low fatality flood.

About the 3 meter thing: the rule is that when sea levels rise over three meters above their average level, the gates close. The sea levels vary naturally, through tides. The high and lows are averiged out and then when the sea rises over that average by three meters (about ten feet), the gates close automatically. Thank you for you great reactions!

About the 3m above regular sea level before the dams are closed: The sea level of the North Sea is not constant. It changes with regular tides. In addition to that, strong winds from the North can cause an additional build-up of water in the Zeeland area (the North Sea is funnel shaped between Great Britain and the Netherlands), causing water from the North Sea to flow back up into the river delta, putting lower and weaker dykes in the river delta at risk of overflowing and breaking. So when a combination of factors causes the sea level to rise more than 3m above average, the dams at the perimeter of the river delta close (automatically), preventing too much water from the North Sea flowing back up into the delta and potentialy flooding pieces of land.

The Delta works are in Zeeland a provence in the south, The zuiderzeekering (Afsluitdijk) is located between Noord-Holland and Friesland. To provences in the North. That's why it does not compute Charlie. They are nowhere near each other and have nothing to do with eachother other then havig the same function of keeping us safe. The Delta works (in the south) are open, as in seawater can still enter into the waterways as it always did. They did this to preserve the salt craving flora and fauna so so they didnt have to suffer. If the sealevel is rising due to a stormsurge, and a danger of flooding will become imminent they will close those open doors. When the water rises above 3 m above normal (Normal is when the sea is calm) the whole closing of the doors will start. Its like you have your window open to let in the breeze while you are doing you administration at the table, but when it gets windy you will close the window to keep the wind outside so your papers dont get blown of the table. Same effect, when the Delta works close we keep the sea out.

Frisian is not only spoken in Friesland (province in NL), but there's an entire coastal region where people still talk Frisian (one way or another) starting at the southern tip of Zeeland right along Zuid and Noord-Holland, Friesland through Germanies Ostfriesland/Saterland up to Denmarks Nordfriesland. All dating back to the Roman era when people living there were called the 'Frisii' (search wikipedia for 'Frisians'). Fun fact: my brother and sister in-law live in a region of North-Holland called 'West-Friesland', in a fully functional, restored windmill (a 'strijkmolen') and she's the official licensed miller (yes, you do need a license to operate a mill, 2 years or more of training on mills throughout the country). She was born in the mill next door, operated by her father since the 1960's. BTW, the West-Frisian dialect doesn't even closely resemble the Frisian language nowadays.

If i understand it correctly, if storm surges on the ocean push the up the water in the North sea. Think of it like a gigantuan wave which is then lodged between in the mainland and the brittish isles. It can rise 3 meters above the "normal"sealevel than. If that happends the sea will push inward because that's the easy way to go. To prevent that the doors will close. I think less than 3 meters will not cause to much damage. Because everytime you close the dams it might have other consequenses you dont want.

One of the reasons for losing land lies in something that has been going on since the last ice age. Much of northern Europe, and specifically Scandinavia, was covered with thick ice sheets. Due to the weight of those ice sheets, Scandinavia was slowly pushed downwards by about 1 Kilometer (some 600 yards). And, like in a seesaw, due to buoyancy, the parts of Europe south of Scandinavia rose as a result. At the end of the ice age the glaciers that covered Scandinavia slowly melted, removing much of the weight that had been pushing Scandinavia down. And, you've guessed it, as a result of the same seesaw effect, as Scandinavia started to rise again, western Europe started to sink down. This occurs very slowly, but actually more rapidly than the general sea-level increase, at least until now. So the Netherlands not only has to cope with rising sea levels but also with subsidence.

When he says Holland is the alternative for the netherlands it is because in some countries in Europe they refer to The Netherlands as such, like for example in Romania, we refer to The Netherlands as 'Olanda' .Even the wiki page mentions that it is informally called Holland. Recently it was changed and it has started to pop up in most official mentions as The Netherlands (in romanian 'Tarile de Jos' or 'Countries from Below). Would love to see some videos about other countries in Europe like Romania or Poland or other eastern european countries.

Between 1200ad and 1900ad the Dutch reclaimed 1.285.000 acres from the water, but lost 1.400.000 to the Zuiderzee. So they where fighting the sea: but still losing slowly. After that period: we started winning :)

Holland is two provinces making up one of the kingdoms that formed the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. (Verenigd koninkrijk der Nederlanden), a term still used on dutch passports and there only.

The Fryslan language, only spoken in Friesland, the most upper west Provence of the Netherlands, has more ties with the Welsh language, then with the English language. Fun fact: Fryslan is an actual acknowledged language, where all other areas in the Netherlands have their own dialects. Although being relatively close to each other, the cities of Leiden, the Hague and Rotterdam all have their own dialects, which us Dutchies can clearly tell apart.

You are right, Holland is just the provinces of North- and South-Holland and the whole country is the Netherlands. Or like the French say: Les Pays-Bas. As to reclaiming less that they lost: there is still a part of The Zuiderzee, but that is called IJsselmeer now. They had to keep that body of water, otherwise the river IJssel had nowhere to go to.

Remember that the night from januari 31st on februari 1st we (the dutch) had the great flood. My grandmother survived this night, but lost her sibling during the events. Also: The Netherlands is the country. Holland is just two of the twelve provinces. Also fun fact: when the dutch liberated them selves from the Spanish. They flooded plains and used boats to stab the Spanish who where not drowning.

Maes is an old spelling, ae is just pronounced as aa. Fun fact, around dykes you can eat local specialty waterkonijn, water rabbit, It is actually a kind of big rat that borrows in dykes and weakens them, muskusrat in Dutch. Maybe it is only a Flemish thing. We eat anything, snails, horses, raw meats, … 😬

the Zuiderzee is in the North, the Deltaworks (nothing to do with the Zuiderzee) is in the South ... he should have shown a map of whole of the Netherlands. De first kering he is talking about has big doors in between the pillars which close when the sea gets to high, but are open to make sure that the life in the part that is behind the kering is not affected

The Zuiderzee works are in an other area of the Netherlands as the Oosterschelde kering. Normal dikes in the delta can cope with 3m above sea level, higher sealevel then 3m the delta is shut of bij closing the doors of the Oosterscheldekering.

This guy likes to hear himself talking, but didn't talk about the Deltawerken. He mostly talked about the Zuiderzeewerken en de Maeslantkering. Both the Deltawerken and the Maeslantkering are build to protect the provinces of Zeeland and Zuid-Holland. Primairy the Zuiderzeewerken were also built to protect the coast of the Zuiderzee by closing it by building the Afsluitdijk. At that moment the name of the Zuiderzee changedd into IJsselmeer. Afterwards the gouvernment decided to create land by poldering. In fact, there were plans to dry the entire former Zuiderzee. Fortunately they kept it by only two polders , both huge (since 1986 together the new province of Flevoland). Recently they created a kind of isle in the Markermeer (initialy planned to become the next polder, which is canceled) named "het Markerwad" in order to create for birds a resting place and a place to breed.

Hello Charlie, there is an important poem in the Netherlands about the land and the water, see here Memory of Holland Thinking of Holland I see wide rivers slow through infinity go lowland, rows unthinkable thin poplars a like high plumes stand at the end; and in the great space sunken the farms spread throughout the country groups of trees, villages, truncated towers, churches and elms in a grand context. the sky is low and the sun is slowly rising in gray multicolored fumes smothered, and in all regions becomes the voice of the water with its eternal disasters feared and heard

You were right about them showing a picture of the Flevopolders when talking about the Zeeland flooding and barriers. Zuiderzee (he's not pronouncing it right) because there's the Noordzee (which the English call the North Sea). So it was the South Sea in that sense. I always compare it to saying England instead of the UK. The Netherlands is the official name. Yes! Frisian (Fries) is even closer to English. Dutch: kerk, Frisian: tsjerk (cherk in English spelling), English: church.

Whe also have the haringvliet sluis, its a bit smaller then the afsluitdijk. Also take a look at the lekdijk, there you can see if you are on the dijk, the water is about 1 meter lower then the dijk and on the other side you see farms and houses that are 15 meters below the water, thats amazing to see, i say this as a dutch man. Ps. Nice video.

I am from The Netherlands and currently i am travelling in France, Spain and Portugal. If someone asks me where i'm from, i say: "from Holland". So, i dont think that anyone from The Netherlands would be offended, or even notice that "Holland" is the wrong term for The Netherlands. In dutch we would call our country "Nederland" and not "Holland" but in other countries it feels to me that "Holland" is more clearly for the none Dutch people.

@29:08 The Delta works doors may by law only be closed if the sea level is 3 or more meters higher than 'normally'. So let's say, the sea level is normally 0 meters (the base height), a tide of 3 meters is needed to be allowed to close the doors fully.

Me as a Dutch person currently watching the beginning, cringing away... The Delta works are something completely different from the land reclamation in the Flevopolder... The Delta works were build exclusively because of the storm surge of 1953... Where a 'perfect' storm caused the levies to break across the southern islands of the Netherlands... It had nothing to do with reclamation, just with protection... How he is intermingling Flevoland with the Delta works is confusing to anyone not familiar with the projects.... Yes it's part of the Delta project, which is to generally protect against the seawater... The Delta works specifically is the barrier construction between the islands in Zeeland, shielding the river Delta from flooding when a storm pushes the water up again... Flevoland doesn't need this, because the 'afsluitdijk' is the barrier that closes off the access of the sea Just now got to the point where you are wondering about the water connection between the Zuiderzee and the Delta works... They are not even close to each other.. completely different parts of the country. As for the Rotterdam dijk situation, in order to fix and reinforce them to the specifications needed, they would have to have been expanded by a lot.. meaning nearby housing and other buildings would have to go. The dude's use of Holland for the entire country is annoying to say the least.... If you're gonna half assed research the engineering, might as well read up on how to refer to the country it's in 😄🤣

10:18 That's not how you spell Zuiderzee, there's an extra "e" on the end. Zuiderzee literally means the sea of the south, but it was simply called the South Sea in English. This is because it lies south of the North Sea. 27:42 "Regular sea level" is a sort of average of the different tide heights at a certain point in Amsterdam. This height is called Normaal Amsterdams Peil (NAP; normal level of Amsterdam) and is what we use as the zero level for sea water. When we say land is below sea level, we mean it is below NAP. When the tide and wind and so on push the sea level to NAP + 3 meters or more, the doors can be closed.

And I should check out the date of this vid, since when it comes to Holland versus the Netherlands, that is only a discussion in maybe the last century, and before that the Netherlands were referred to as simply Holland. As for Lelystad, for a long time that was the biggest city in Flevoland. Not sure it still is, I don't keep track :)
