Strictly speaking, slavery wasn't legal in England since soon after the Norman conquest, although serfdom existed. In the Somerset case of 1772, Lord Mansfield ruled that, as slavery was not recognised by English law, James Somerset, a slave who had been brought to England and then escaped, could not be forcibly sent to Jamaica for sale, and he was set free. But slavery existed in the British colonies and was abolished in 1833. The prohibition on slavery and servitude is now codified under Article 4 of the European Convention on Human Rights, in force since 1953 and incorporated directly into United Kingdom law by the Human Rights Act 1998. So I don't know where the 2010 date comes from.

2010 when was when it was passed as an act. Prior to that point it was common law(decided by court rulings) rather than statute(laws passed by the government). It mostly existed as a bit of trivia and to close the loophole where technically it was possible for someone to appeal it up to the Supreme Court and get them to overturn it(since they have the right to overule all common law decisions). Obviously the loophole would never happen, but closing it shut people up about how it was possible.

The official language of the court of England was French, due to the Norman overlords at the time. The common folk would've spoken dialects of English so it's not like the entire country was French speaking - just the small ruling minority. It wasn't 600 years either. By the time the 14th century came around the English were fighting the French so wanted to be more English, hence why the court language then changed to the local language of the populous

In reality, 1066 is the last time an acceptably French noble stood on the native soil of the British Isles with their own two feet. Not Charlemagne, not Napoleon nor any of the sixteen Louis. In that same thousand years however, multiple English and British monarchs have conquered, ruled and collected tithes and taxes from great swathes of France - sometimes a greater area and for a longer period of time than the French monarch. Most successful Europeans ever are therefore easily the English....

The fact that Brisol is further East than Edinburgh is 'surprising' because Bristol is on the West Coast of England, and Edinburgh is on the East coast of Scotland. You need to look at a map which is correctly oriented North/ South in order to see how this works. Often maps of the British Isles are rotated so that it looks as if the South coast runs West to East. 'Chanel No.5' is a perfume by Chanel.......It was a conceit that they should be the first thing advertised on the TV chanNel 5. Easy to misread, I know....but. Cecil Chubb didn't 'give it back'. Stonehenge was on privately owned land. Until he 'gave it to the nation', it was a piece of private property. Scientific research has identified that cows from different REGIONS of the UK have different sounding 'voices'. THE COWS DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY ARE - THEY JUST MAKE DIFFERENT SOUNDS!!!!

In Britain a fire brigade crew can call for extra assistance by calling in "Make engines three". When the Blitz hit the old goods station in Shoreditch the crew called "Make engines 3". 1. French was only the official language for about 300 years not 600. 2. Slavery was technically banned in England by William the Conqueror, this was apparently done to make him some more money. Slavery, which was the buying and selling of a person, died off in around the 12th century. What was left were serfs which were a bit like slaves but a little more freedom. All slavery was then officially illegal in 1807 but before that they weren't any slaves in britian but for british slave owners outside of the UK and in 1833 in the British empire.

Oliver Cromwell is probably the only person that has a separate Wikipedia article for his decapitated head. They thought sticking it on a pike would be enough of a deterrent against usurping the monarchy, but the trials and tribulations of Cromwell's head is probably more of a warning in "what could happen to you in the 3 centuries after your dead body is decapitated". As for fictional national animals, the closest country to Scotland that has one is Wales. England's national animal being the lion might not sound made up, although this might: native animals in England used to include cave lions, sabre-tooth cats, and (because you need a coat for the British weather) woolly mammoths and woolly rhinos.

Tyler, my man - I've seen people explain this speaking French thing before - it's no wonder people think that you never read the comments? For a start, that 600 years figure is extremely exaggerated - perhaps just a typing error. William the Conqueror came from Normandy in France in 1066 and spoke Norman French - a kind of dialect of French. So of course all his Court did too. However - laws & edicts etc. were written in Latin as that was a common language among the educated class and of course The Church - and is still used today in legal, medical, pharmaceutical etc. language so people from different language groups can share scholarship/ideas/discoveries. Even though The Court spoke Norman French the population of England kept on speaking English. In fact the English language grew during this time because we took some of their words and made them English words. Just about all of those words are the ones that people in the USA think we spell "wrong"(like "colour" etc.). Then, a few hundred years later it became fashionable for upper class people to speak French as a 2nd language. Even in Australia when I was at school French was taught. But, at no time did ordinary English people speak either Norman or Parisienne French. As for Oliver Cromwell? It's amazing you don't know who he is...because if it were not for him the USA would not have been settled the way it is now. In fact, it might have become French speaking!! Under Cromwell England became a Republic of the most repressive rule in its entire history. Yeah, they exhumed him because the usual fate of traitors was to have bits of themselves on poles in towns all over the country. As Cromwell's son succeeded him for a while this hadn't happened, so the irate population figured "Better late than never" and dug him up so people could continue to be reminded what his fate had been.

Cromwell really should be better known in the states, as he led a republic. And quite a religious one. You get the picture.

The language aspect is official language was french. The nobility was basically speaking french. The normal e ery day citizen spoke french and english etc. The official language for formal documents was actually written by the clergy and was in medieval latin. Chauser's works was one of the first to actually be written and published in English and marks a change in language use and official recognition. I know you can't do a reaction video on this but if you really want to learn British history I highly recommend The British History Podcast. Really thorough and enjoyable podcast. Edit to add to this when we first moved to England for school we encountered a dairy farm that had these cows on this huge slowly rotating platform and was playing classical music. We asked the farmer why and he told us research showed it sweetened the milk. The cow regional accent i am not sure about but maybe its more that certain livestock would be bred with others in the same regions for centuries so likely certain characteristics would be bred into them

Oliver Cromwell WAS exhumed from Westminster Abbey and thrown into a pit. He overthrew the King and started the Civil War. Stonehenge was bought by a private citizen at one time and then returned to the nation. The legend is if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London, England will fall. They are kept there by the Guards.

We lost 40,000 people in the blitz. Knocks 9/11 into a cocked hat! Mostly they were women and some children but most kids had been evacuated to the countryside. Men home on leave, the elderly and disabled. London, Birmingham, Coventry, Plymouth, Exeter, Liverpool, Hull (my aunty Pat was born 1 streets down from the bombing) York, Cardiff, Manchester, Sunderland, Belfast, and Glasgow.

The language thing is wrong. Only the Norman rulers spoke a form of French, but even they spoke English within 300 years . Cromwell had executed King Charles 1st. When his son became King they took Cromwell's body out of Westminster Abbey & executed it. Slavery was banned in 11th century. Chubb bought the land which included Stonehenge. Britain just parked a couple of warships in the harbour, so they gave in. A few years ago a Dutchman had to be sent for because the British farmer couldn't get them to understand him, they only knew Dutch. The Blitz was the bombing of Britain. Several pet ravens are always kept at the Tower of London. The worms were meant to mix up the soil to drain it. This didn't happen. The tornadoes from the Atlantic, & UK landmass is small. Someone long ago had a vision if a unicorn in Scotland. The Belfast is a battleship. The guns have to point somewhere. The UK is made of 4 countries like the USA is made up of 50 sovereign states.

French was NOT spoken in England for 600 years. It was introduced by the Normans in1066 and was only spoken by the aristocracy. French was the official language of the king's court and nobles. It became extinct after 300 years but common English absorbed a good number of French words during that time.
