One of the players that made growing up as a NSW fan so painful. As long as Slater was on the field it didn’t matter how many points in front of QLD we were, I knew the lead wasn’t safe. He was incredible, a mix of pure talent, grit and intelligence. The best of all time in his position imo, not sure we’ll ever see a fullback be so consistently good for so many years again.

What made Slater such a dangerous broken-play runner (possibly the best the game has seen) is he had incredible balance when running and was able to step off both feet. Combine thay with explosive acceleration he could turn a half-gap into a hole big enough to drive cattle through, and his swerve made it very difficult for defenders to tackle him, and he would often wrong-foot them. He also had great hands which allowed him to catch and hold on to balls which otherwise would have gone to ground.

I went to school with Billy (many years ago haha) And despite the great feats he has achieved in the game, he was always a very technical player and had a fantastic "footy mind" I played in the opposing team for the Innisfail Cowboys while he played for the Innisfail brothers team and whilst the team he played for wasn't as good as ours (we won the premiership that year) but Billy was always our main target as he had the ability to score evertime he touched the ball with his crazy speed. It makes me proud to know one of the local boys got to not only the "big leagues" but to be the best fullback in the game blows my mind! Good onya Slater, you did us all proud for sure!
@paulp1450

Billy was normally in the fullback position (No.1). The fullback has the most flexibility to be anywhere on the field when attacking, literally anywhere. His responsibility is to look for weak areas of the defense and to make plays in that area. As the game goes on, the bigger men in the middle (the Forwards) will start to tire and he will likely make more yards up the middle. But he can be right on the sideline if he wants (in attack only though). However in defense, the fullback will almost always be the deepest player (more important later in the tackle count when a kick is more likely to occur), he is the director on defense, constantly talking and telling defenders to move one way or another - right across the field (you don't normally see this on TV but in person you do). He will also try to plug any gap should it appear (for example, he see's a '3 on 2' developing) - which also increases the risk that the attackers may kick the ball at that time - so he will plug the gaps cautiously.

The State of Origin (Queensland v New South Wales) is the pinnacle of Rugby League. Players have to play junior football in those states to be eligible for selection. Great reaction, we love the fact that you are discovering what an awesome game Rugby League is. I just need to help you with one thing. First of all this is in the category of "Aussies are different, weird perhaps." We don't say "Maroon" like the rest of the world, we say it more like it was said in its original language "Marone," with the final syllable rhyming with bone. So when it becomes the default name of the team it is just a little off putting to hear it pronounced "maroon." Of course because most of the world says it like that there are some Aussies that insist on pronouncing it that way too and this has to stop.

Billy slater plays fullback. The number 1. He revolutionised how fullbacks played in the game. He was a fullback but he played like a second 6 on the field. He set up try's like a five eight (6). Because of Billy slater every full back in the game mirrors how he plays. Setting up try's like a 6. Thanks to Billy the Kid. Fullbacks like Kaylyn Ponga, James Tudesco, Dylan Edwards, just to name a few.

OK, So you are right about slowing down to pitch it however, what they are really doing is drawing in the defender to commit to them, Once the defer or defenders commit he passes the ball and those defenders are unable to make a play at anyone you pass it to.. If you have a two on one situation you simply draw in the one defender and pass.
@RealFansSports
@RealFansSports Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s essentially what I meant. Might not of worded it out all of the way. Slows down to allow to pass to develop to force the defense to make a choice to play the Ball handler or the pass

Billy is still the Maroons coach in the current 2023 Origin Series. Qld just clinched the series again, winning the first two games. There is still one more game to be played in 3 weeks time. It will be a dead rubber, but won’t be any less intense. The rivalry of these 2 teams is unique in the world of football.

What needs to be understood here is that State of Origin is rugby league played at THE highest level. It is not just a level above it is on a level all of its own and Slater is one of the greatest to ever play the game. When Parramatta told him to move on ( they couldn’t afford the medical bills ) he refused to retire and signed on to play in Italy. I think he was determined to die on the field and Parramatta didn’t want that responsible for a legend. Billy Slater...... a freak. Another small man who played like a fast, agile, smart Goliath. Fearless and ready to die to save a try.

To answer your question on how defence generally works: 12 players in the line with 1 defender covering behind (fullback, Billy’s position). On the 5th/final tackle, which will usually result in a kick down field for territory by the attacking team (like NFL 4th down) the widest players (wingers) will join the fullback in the secondary defence to help with the kick return. Many, many variations on how the line defends but those are the players you saw with Billy’s line breaks.

Imo the best players in league have all these subtle moves that the average fan doesn't notice. Eg if you turn you hips in slightly the defense may set in place thinking you will attack the line but if they do that, you can do out wide and usually have the defense on the Blackfoot. They all played together through the early 2000s right up to 2018 where most of them retired from the game. They, as a team were the real G.O.A.T's.

To answer your question, the fullback (#1) will usually stay back deep on defence, to stop any line breaks, but they are the key man as they stay back and have to read the play as it's developing and decide whether to come up into the defensive line to stop a run or lateral play, or whether to hang back to defend a kick or line break. So 2 through 13 will line up in a row, with 1 hanging back assessing the situation and making the read.

When the player with the ball (whom has made a break) is slowing down, he may also be drawing the immediate defender to him, forcing said defender to commit and thus giving the person he intends to pass to, a cleaner run. Forcing a defender to commit (to you, as the ball carrier) Is a stock standard move in normal game play, especially when the defense is using what is called 'sliding defense'. You'll see that in normal game play, the attacker actually runs towards a defender. I thinks its called the run option in College football - where the QB runs in a sweep and then considers pitching it to an outside runner (typically a RB) depending on whether a defender commits to stopping that QB or holds off. For the outside players (or inside ones too), ideally, you want to create a '3 on 2', which just means more attackers than defenders. In this scenario, the player on the inside, wants/needs that defender (directly in front or better, to his outside) to commit to him, so that when he passes it to the outside man, that defender is no longer available to assist the other defender/s. Otherwise the defender will slide and potentially even up the '3 on 2' to the be a 3 on 3. In this way, the person with the ball wants to draw the outside defender to himself - he wants to be tackled and will often run directly at said defender to make said defender commit.

Yeah that’s basically what I was trying to say you just worded it so much better than me 😅😂 yeah it’s a smart tactic to try and create the 3 on 2 situations!

No 1 Back fullback the player at the back of the field, last line of defence, 2 Back wing, 3 Back inside centre, 4 Back outside centre, 5 Back wing, 6 Back Stand Off or first five in union, playmaker, 7 Back Halfback usually puts the ball into the scrum, 8 FWD Prop the big boppers usually does the donkey work running the ball up and tackling, 9 FWD hooker the player that passes the ball from dummy half. A dummy half, when a player is tackled and then gets up they roll the ball backwards under their foot to a player that picks up the ball (dummy half) and passes to a runner or to the playmakers usually the no 6 and 7. No 10 FWD Prop do the donkey work taking the ball up and tackling. 11 FWD second rower or lock, usually the defensive players they cover the field and also used on attack. 12 FWD does the same as job as the no 11. Some times they'll split the field one will cover the left side of the filed the other the right. 13 FWD loose forward usually defence and attacking players and roams the field on the defence. 4 Reserves. First of all man you pick up on subtle details super fast, you couldnt be more right when it came to how he held the ball and what it made the defenders think. Secondly this era of State of Origin made growing up as a queenslander so great. I don't think there will ever be such dominance over that long of a time frame by either side again it was truly a spectacular time. GO QUEENSLAND!

The attacking players are always trying to avoid throwing a "forward" pass because it will invoke a penalty. That's why they slow down to pass the ball to avoid the forward pass. The 2 main things to avoid in rugby league are 1. Don't throw a forward pass and 2. Don't tackle a man who does not have the ball.

@@RealFansSports Of course you know this stuff but I was just reinforcing the main principles. Tackling a man without the ball in rugby league is considered a serious offence, especially if that particular guy is about to receive the ball close to the try line it could be deemed a "professional foul" meaning that the offender could be sent off to the sin bin and a penalty try awarded.

a lot of wingers and fullbacks do this im unsure why just something they do i guess not alot of people do this tho, holding the ball in one hand. as a fullback you gotta understand where the ball is and where people are when defending the fullback is like last line of defence he needs to know where that ball is and whos gonna have it.
